Huawei P20 Review: Still Amazing even without the ‘Pro’

The Huawei P20 Series is the best smartphone that the company has ever released. It was praised for its beauty and also its prowess inside. The Huawei P20 Pro packs a triple lens camera setup while the Huawei P20 packs dual lens camera but both smartphones feature a camera lens co-engineered by Leica.

Design and Hardware

I love the clean and premium design of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro and with the Huawei P20? It’s even better. We have a glass back and front and I think this is the sexiest smartphone in the market right now. The smartphone is handy too as the smartphone has a small footprint and because of its display. Surprisingly, it’s not that slippery despite having a mostly glass construction.

Speaking of glass, the only problem that you will encounter with it is that the smartphone is that the smartphone is a fingerprint magnet so I would strongly suggest that you buy a case for your smartphone to avoid breaking the glass and also the fingerprint smudges on the smartphone. It has a neat design at the back and I’m pretty sure that you’ll be proud of it when you own one.

One of the reasons why the back of the Huawei P20 looks so sexy and clean is that they placed the fingerprint scanner on the smartphone just below the display. The fingerprint scanner also acts as a home button of the smartphone but in case you’re not fond of its placement, the face unlock of the smartphone will do just fine.

The smartphone features USB Type-C and unfortunately, the smartphone doesn’t have a headphone jack anymore. Thankfully, there’s a USB Type-C to 3.5mm headphone jack port included in the box. But that’s a pain if you want to charge your smartphone and also use a headphone on your smartphone.

When it comes to connectivity, I’m pretty happy with its call quality and I actually have an advantage when it comes to mobile data because I always get 4G+ on this one despite my other smartphones wasn’t able to get a 4G signal. Huawei’s Kirin Chipset is really good when it comes to that.

Display

The Huawei P20 features a 5.8-inch RGBW display with a 19:9 display aspect ratio and obviously, the Huawei P20 packs a notch. The notch of the smartphone is actually small and it just blocks a small portion of the notification bar. There are the rounded edges too which adds to the sexiness of the smartphone.

The display of the smartphone is just FHD+, it isn’t the best one but the display of the smartphone looks just fine. It obviously has fewer colors than the OLED display of the Huawei P20 Pro but the viewing angles and the color reproduction of the Huawei P20 is just fine.

Battery Life

The Huawei P20 got a 3400mAh battery and it was pretty well. The smartphone was able to last a day of use and for some, it would actually last up to a day and a half of use. In my test at PC Mark, I was able to get a score of 7 hours and 46 minutes. Not bad for a flagship smartphone.

Software

The Huawei P20 is running on EMUI 8.0 on top of Android 8.1 Oreo. The smartphone’s UI is heavily customized and it might not be as silky smooth as the iOS but accessing functions and most of the settings will be just fine.

The smartphone’s UI doesn’t have an app drawer but the home screen itself is the app drawer of the smartphone and the Huawei P20 does come with a lot of bloatware but don’t worry as you can uninstall most of them.

Performance

When it comes to the performance department, the Huawei P20 won’t disappoint you. It might have the same Kirin 970 NPU that we’ve seen in the Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro before but the smartphone will still blow you away in gaming. I’ve tried NBA 2k18 and PUBG Mobile on the smartphone and it was running really fine on the smartphone. In Antutu, we got a score of 204986. It might not be the most powerful in the market right now but it’s still doing well.

Camera

The Huawei P20 features a dual lens camera co-engineered by Leica and damn, to say that the camera of the smartphone is great is an understatement. The capabilities of Huawei P20’s camera is jaw-dropping. How did they do that? Well, thanks to the amazing dual lens camera composed of 12MP RGB + 20MP Monochrome and also an Advance AI on the smartphone, the shots that I took were really great.

Not only that, the smartphone also has an AI Image stabilization which is a game changer in the industry as you can take 4 seconds handheld night shots even without a tripod. Because of this, night mode shots were clear, the contrasts are on point and the lights are really balanced. Check out the shots that I took using the Huawei P20:

Well, the selfie camera of the Huawei P20 isn’t the best one that I’ve used but it will do just fine. I’ve noticed the selfies are a little softer but the dynamic range and the colors were still good.

Thanks to AI, the smartphone can easily detect the objects that I’m shooting. It means that the smartphone can easily give you the best settings and adjustments for the shots. For example, when you’re taking a photo of a sunset, the smartphone will give you the best colors of yellow and orange which will give you the best vivid colors of a sunset.

Verdict

The Huawei P20 is not only sexy and stylish but the smartphone is also powerful on the inside. The camera of the smartphone is just insane and without a doubt, the Huawei P20 is really deserving of that high score at DxOMark. The Huawei P20 also sports a more affordable price tag compared to other flagship smartphones but unfortunately, this one doesn’t come in Twilight 😉

The Huawei P20 Pro is great but if you can’t afford that, the Huawei P20 is already enough and yes, the Huawei P20 still has a powerful camera.

The Huawei P20 is now available for P34,990.
