Apple is reportedly preparing its first affordable Mac laptop to compete with the Chromebooks and affordable Windows laptops. It is expected to arrive in the first half of 2026, according to supply-chains and Mark Gurman. The device aims target students, casual users and those currently using Chromebooks or entry-level Windows laptops.
The upcoming MacBook model has an internal codename of J700. It is designed with cost-saving components, including a smaller LCD screen and an iPhone-series chip rather than Apple’s typical M-series processors. According to sources, the price will be well under USD $1,000.
By using a smartphone chip and a simpler display, Apple intends to maintain acceptable performance levels while lowering the entry barrier. Early internal testing reportedly shows that the selected iPhone chip outperforms older Mac-specific M1 chips.
What to expect from the affordable MacBook:
- Processor: An iPhone-series chip rather than an M-series Mac chip.
- Display: An LCD panel slightly smaller than current entry-level MacBooks
- Price: Sub-$1,000, possibly around the USD $600–700 range.
- Launch timeframe: First half of 2026
While Apple has not yet confirmed it, but if true, this signals a strategy to expand its Mac lineup to more users especially in the mass market.
