There are a lot of mid-range smartphones out in the market and two of my favorites out there are the Samsung Galaxy A71 and Huawei Nova 7. Both are capable mid-range smartphones that has a capable and decent hardware inside and both smartphones does pack some interesting features but how does these two smartphones fare against each other? Check it out in our comparison below:

Design

The Samsung Galaxy A71 features a geometric design at the back with some rainbow line reflections at the back but I like the shining silver color of Huawei Nova 7 since it has a catchier design and the mirror effect on the back of the smartphone is really beautiful too.

Samsung Galaxy A71 features a glasstic back while the Huawei Nova 7 features a glass back which makes the latter feature a more premium feel and also more superior in terms of build quality. The Huawei Nova 7 also features a narrower body which makes the smartphone more ergonomic to the hand and also easier to grip. For the colors, the Huawei Nova 7 comes in Space Silver and Midsummer Purple while the Samsung Galaxy A71 comes in Prism Crush Blue, Prism Crush Silver and Prism Crush Black.

Display

Both has their own unique design and both are pretty ergonomic but the Samsung Galaxy A71 has a bigger footprint since we got here a larger 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display while the Huawei Nova 7 feels handier with its 6.53-inch OLED display. Both smartphone sports a punch-hole camera but the Huawei Nova 7 has a noticeably smaller punch hole camera in here. Both smartphones boast an in-display fingerprint scanner and they also have face unlock in case you’re wondering.

Both displays are excellent and the colors are just popping out on both displays of the smartphones and they are both bright which is enough for outside visibility. For the display, I enjoy watching videos on the Huawei Nova 7 as the punch-hole is less distracting since it is located at the upper left of the display instead of the middle one on the Galaxy A71.

Battery and Charging

Both smartphones also boast a USB-C port and both of them supports fast charging but the Huawei Nova 7 has a big advantage here since we’re getting here a 40W charging with the Huawei SuperCharge while the Samsung Galaxy A71 only features a 25W Fast Charging. For the battery, the Huawei Nova 7 got a 4000mAh battery while the Galaxy A71 features a 4500mAh battery.

In our battery test of these two smartphones, we got a longer battery life on the Huawei Nova 7 despite having a smaller battery compared to the Samsung Galaxy A71 and since we’re getting a 40W charging on the Huawei Nova 7, charging the smartphone is faster on that one too.

Memory

The Samsung Galaxy A71 and the Huawei Nova 7 boasts an 8GB RAM inside these smartphones but the Samsung Galaxy A71 only features a 128GB of internal storage while the Huawei Nova 7 features double the storage with its 256GB of internal storage and I’m pretty you won’t ran out of memory on that one.

These days in where games are getting bigger and we consume more content on our devices, it’s better to have larger storage on our smartphones especially now that we can record 4K videos on our smartphones.

Camera

This is one of the interesting features of the smartphone – the camera. First, let’s talk about the camera of the Samsung Galaxy A71 – there’s the 64MP main camera and for the ultra wide there’s the 12MP lens. There’s the 5MP live focus camera too for better portrait shots and bokeh and of course, the 5MP macro camera.

The Huawei Nova 7 also got here a quad-camera setup too but this time, we got here a 64MP main camera paired with 8MP ultra wide angle lens, an 8MP telephoto lens and a 2MP macro lens. Personally, I prefer having a telephoto lens on a smartphone as I use the camera more on zooming rather than on macro shots so it’s already a plus for me.

In our sample shots that we took using the Huawei Nova 7 and the Samsung Galaxy A71, both performed pretty well with both smartphones producing pretty good photos and I can definitely say that both smartphones performed well but in our shots using the smartphone, the Galaxy A71 does have a slight advantage when it comes to the quality of the shots. Take a look below:

In this shot, we can see that the Galaxy A71 has sharper details and more accurate colors but the Huawei Nova 7 produces livelier colors on the shot thanks to AI

Just like the shot earlier, the Samsung Galaxy A71 has sharper details with more accurate tone but the Huawei Nova 7 looks warmer and the colors are pleasing to the eye.

One of the main difference that can be seen in this shot is that Huawei Nova 7 gives better and more saturated colors compared to the shot on the Samsung Galaxy A71. With AI and the Kirin 985 of the Huawei Nova 7, it can easily recognize and focus on the object.

One of the biggest advantages of the Huawei Nova 7 over the Samsung Galaxy A71 is the night mode and the Huawei Nova 7 clearly wins on this one as we can get better and brighter night shots on the smartphone. Aside from that, the colors are a lot better even on night mode and the night mode on the Nova 7 can even beat the ones on some flagship smartphones.

LTE vs. 5G

One of the biggest advantages of the Huawei Nova 7 is its chipset inside. First, this one packs the Kirin 985 chipset which is new while the Samsung Galaxy A71 features a Snapdragon 730G processor which is pretty popular but the Kirin 985 chipset performs a lot better in our benchmark test and in gaming, you have a better advantage on the Huawei Nova 7 as you can have better frames. Check out the benchmarks of the smartphones below:

But here’s probably the biggest thing that separates the Huawei Nova 7 from the Samsung Galaxy A71 – there’s 5G on the Huawei Nova 7. Why is it a big thing? Well, this means that Huawei Nova 7 is future proof and you can get internet speeds up to 10x faster than what you can get on the LTE. The possibilities of 5G are just endless and the Huawei Nova Nova 7 5G is also one of the most affordable smartphones to have 5G.

When it comes to gaming, expect game streaming to be possible on 5G-powered smartphones which is the future and of course, you can consume more content at a better and higher quality without problems as you can get faster speeds to download content.

The transition to 5G is seamless too as it is coming in the Philippines soon and you don’t have to change your sim cards to enjoy 5G.

Software

On the software side, the Samsung Galaxy A71 and the Huawei Nova 7 has a different approach. First, there’s the Samsung Galaxy A71 that runs on OneUI 2.1 and it comes with Android 10. The ecosystem of Samsung Galaxy A71 isn’t as good as the Samsung Galaxy S series but it’s fast and reliable enough while for its software, it relies on Google Play services.

On the other hand, the Huawei Nova 7 relies on Huawei Mobile Services that has grown a lot in the last few months. There’s EMUI 10.1 OS in here too and it’s fast and very responsive. Another thing that I love in here is the colors that we got here is pretty to the eyes. It’s also jam-packed with features that works pretty well with other Huawei devices such as MeeTime and also Huawei Share which is my favorite so I can transfer files to my notebook easier.

For its applications, it relies on the Huawei Mobile Services and you can download apps on the Huawei AppGallery that includes applications like Facebook, BDO, Viber, PayMaya, and many more but if you want to discover more applications, you can opt for the Huawei Petal Search Widget in which is a gate to a million of apps.

With Huawei Petal Search Widget, you can download apps including YouTube, Facebook and other top applications supported by the smartphone. You can easily download the Huawei Petal Search Widget on the Huawei AppGallery.

Verdict

Again, both smartphones are good but the Huawei Nova 7 got more to offer ranging from the powerful Kirin 985 chipset that performs a lot better when it comes to performance and of course, there’s 5G inside too so you won’t have a single problem about future-proofing your smartphone. There’s bigger storage too and a faster charging on the Huawei Nova 7. While there might be a slight advantage on the camera of the Samsung Galaxy A71, the Huawei Nova 7 packs a telephoto camera that lets you have an optical zoom on the smartphone.

Both the Samsung Galaxy A71 and the Huawei Nova 7 is now available in the market.
