ASUS Zenfone 2 Deluxe Special Edition Unboxing and Quick Review

3

Before 2015 ended, ASUS has surprised us with their newest smartphone that I didn’t expect that’ll arrive in the country and it’s the ASUS Zenfone 2 Deluxe Special Edition. The ASUS Zenfone 2 Deluxe Special Edition has almost the similar specifications with the original one but this one has a bigger storage and a faster processor. It packs an Intel processor but with a faster clock which is the 2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Atom Z3590 processor, 4GB RAM, 5.5-inch Full HD Display, and a Titanic 256 GB of total storage which consists of 128GB Internal Storage and 128GB MicroSD card included in the box. Not only that, the special edition of the ASUS Zenfone 2 Deluxe Special Edition also comes in two back covers. Want to know more about this smartphone? Check out my unboxing and quick review below:

Jam Online’s Best gadgets of 2015

0

2015 is another great year for smartphones and tablets. This year, we’ve seen Samsung went to the glass and metal design and we’ve now experienced the first wearable device of Apple. For local brands, we’ve also seen better smartphones and more gadgets from them. So today, we’ll celebrate the end of 2015 by choosing the best gadgets of this year.

Best affordable smartphone : Cherry Mobile Flare 4

20151006_195313-2

For me, this is the best affordable smartphone available right now. Actually, the hardware of the Cherry Mobile Flare 4 and the Flare S4 is the same but the Cherry Mobile Flare 4 is sexier than the latter thanks to its metal frame and curvy design. One thing that they didn’t mentioned about the Cherry Mobile Flare 4 is that it has a 2.5 glass, which is a small feature that I really love.

When it comes to the hardware department, it doesn’t disappoint too. It has a 64-bit processor along with a 2GB of RAM which is already enough for some light-heavy tasks and games. So why is it the best affordable smartphone for me? Well, because this smartphone has it all. It has a good design, a good hardware, and it’s really affordable for what you can get from this smartphone.

Best midrange smartphone: ASUS Zenfone 2

ASUS-ZenFone-2_1

ASUS Zenfone 2 is not alone. There are a lot of Zenfones this year but their first release of their second-generation Zenfone is the ASUS Zenfone 2. The ASUS Zenfone 2 have been greatly popular in the country thanks to its hardware and affordable price. The Zenfone 2 is also available in different storages and for P15,000 you can get a 64GB smartphone. This one is also using an Intel Atom processor inside which fares good for any apps and games. Not the best processor but it can play most games and applications. The RAM is also superb thanks to its 4GB of RAM. For P15,000, the smartphone is really good.

Best flagship smartphone: Huawei Nexus 6P

Nexus-6P-6

This is the best Nexus smartphone that you can get this year. Oh wait, no, it’s not the best Nexus smartphone that you can get, THIS IS THE BEST SMARTPHONE THAT YOU CAN GET THIS YEAR. It has a gorgeous metal design that I thought that would suck when it was leaked because of the camera hump at the back but in reality, I couldn’t even feel that hump.

The performance of the Huawei Nexus 6P is one of the best today, thanks to its Snapdragon 810 processor and yes, the software experience is really good and I really love it. Everything about this smartphone is really lovely. A must buy if you have the moolah.

Best tablet Cherry Mobile MAIA Smart Tab

Cherry-Mobile-Smart-MAIA-Tab-9

I was not surprised that Cherry Mobile will announce a device like this because there are already a lot of tablets like this. Actually, this is not the first local dual-booting tablet but this one has ironed out its bugs, decent hardware and software, and a very affordable price tag. Unlike most Windows tablets out there, this one packs a 32GB storage in which 24GB was given to Windows while the rest is for Android.

So why is it the best tablet of this year? Because you can get a lot from it for P5,000. It’s affordable and you can get a Windows tablet that you can use to type your documents and an Android tablet for your games and mobile applications.

Gadget of the year: Cherry Mobile MAIA Smart Tab

Cherry-Mobile-Smart-MAIA-Tab-9

This is my favorite gadget of the year. Yes, this tablet isn’t flawless but again, for P5,000 you can get a lot from it. Since this tablet can run Windows and Android, you can run your favorite Windows games such as DOTA on Warcraft 3 and Red Alert 2 and also boot to Android to play games such as Clash of Clans.

It’s an all-in-one device if you’ll buy a keyboard and mouse for it and you could easily make this tablet as a productivity device for typing your thesis documentations and even using the MAIA Smart Tab for Arduino projects. The Cherry Mobile MAIA Smart Tab surprised me with what I can get from it for P5,000. It’s freakin affordable and it has replaced my iPad and notebook in some cases, it’s just an amazing device for its price.

So why is it my gadget of the year? Well, because this tablet is really good at its class. This tablet has even trumped out the tablets at a even higher price range. Not only this tablet can play the latest Android games but it can also be a device that you can use for school or work thanks to its Windows operating system and yet, this tablet is priced at P4,999. This tablet is just amazing.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ Review

0

Samsung has unveiled their most premium devices ever this year and one of them is the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. The device was no surprise because its smaller brother, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge was also announced earlier this year. Basically, this smartphone looks similar but this one is the bigger brother and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus packs a better hardware

Design and Hardware

When I thought that the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge’s design were near to perfection, I was wrong. The smaller Galaxy S6 Edge was harder to hold compared to the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. Yes, the bigger one is much comfortable for me. Maybe it’s just me but I feel like holding this one on my hand rather than putting it on my pocket.

Samsung galaxy s6 edge plus (5)

Again, just like its flagship brothers, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus have a premium materials. Samsung has turned away from plastic and they’ve turned to glass and metal, materials used on most premium smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is very elegant thanks to its design.

Samsung galaxy s6 edge plus (6)

But of course, this design comes with compromises because you cannot add an expandable storage and you cannot remove the battery of the smartphone, a feature that is well loved by Android users. For some, it might be a dealbreaker but if there’s a good reason why Samsung have removed that feature. Why? Because having a removable storage on this device would bottleneck the internal memory speeds of this smartphone, which means that the smartphone would experience slowdowns and lags

Samsung galaxy s6 edge plus (4)

Just like the Samsung Galaxy S6 that we’ve reviewed before, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus variant that will be arriving in the country is the dual sim variant. Yep, we’ll be getting the dual sim variant even for the edge version of Samsung’s flagship phablet.

Display

The display is the hardware that set the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus different from the Galaxy Note 5. But of course, since we’re getting the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus on this one, we won’t have the very useful S Pen that was used in the Note devices.

Samsung galaxy s6 edge plus (8)

First, the display of the smartphone is very awesome. Not only because it’s curved but also because this smartphone also have phablet sized 5.7-inch Super AMOLED QHD display. The display is glorious and it’s really great to look at. Outside, the display still looks good and it’s really beautiful. The colors were really vivid and the display were really bright. Definitely one of the best out there for smartphones.

Samsung galaxy s6 edge plus (2)

The curved display might look good to you but at some times, you’ll find the curve display annoying because it is really distracting when playing full-screen games and whenever I watch videos and browse pictures. It really irks me to see images and videos that’s a little distorted on both sides.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus packs a curved display for a reason. There are some features that can be used on this phone that isn’t present on its note brother. The Edge display can be used as a notification light if the smartphone’s display is facing upside-down, night clock, information stream, people edge to have quick access to contacts and my favorite, apps edge in which you can use it as a shortcut for apps.

I felt that the Edge display of the smartphone needs more developer support and apps should take advantage of its edge display.

Software and Performance

This year Samsung decided to ditch the Qualcomm processors in their smartphones to focus on their own chipset, the Exynos. And yes, this processor is very powerful and it can run different heavy apps and games without a problem. There’s a spacious 4GB of RAM too which won’t be a problem for multitasking. Actually, I can run different games and apps on this one without problems.

One of the problems that I’ve encountered after using the Samsung Galaxy S6 for a while is its temperature. The Galaxy S6 is really hot when playing games but with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, the smartphone gets hot too but not to that alarming point of heat.

Samsung galaxy s6 edge plus (9)

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is still using the TouchWiz UI. It’s flat and it’s fast. In my use, I didn’t experience lags and slowdowns which is really weird because most of the time, the TouchWiz UI lags after some time of use.

However, I was disappointed that this smartphone didn’t maximize its edge display on its apps. For example, it would be awesome if some of their built-in apps like the messages to have a special shortcut when they use the Edge Display.

When it comes to battery life, the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus have improved over the Galaxy S6 but if they’ve only added a more juices into it, it could last a day and a half. In my average use, the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus was able to last up to a day of normal use. Most of the time, I don’t bring my power bank anymore.

Camera

When it comes to camera performance, this smartphone have the best camera that you can get on a smartphone. That’s it. No need for more explanations because this one is the best. Check out the photos that I took using the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus

Verdict

Samsung galaxy s6 edge plus (3)

Without a doubt, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is a flagship that can really catch our eyes due to its beautiful design and its curve display. It might be Samsung’s best-looking smartphone but this one is more expensive than the Galaxy Note 5 and the curved display wasn’t maximized as I expected.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Review

0

The Samsung Galaxy Note series typically its most popular series of Galaxy smartphones because not only you’ll get the S Pen and a large display but they’ve also fixed most flaws and problems that were experienced on the S series. And today, we’re gonna review one of the flagship phablet of Samsung, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5.

Design and Hardware

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (2)

Its smaller brother, the Galaxy S6 is harder to hold due to its less curvy back and I was actually expecting that this smartphone would be even harder to grip because of its large display and metal frame that looks similar to the Samsung Galaxy S6 but I was wrong. The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 features a curve back which lets you easily hold the phone despite having a phablet size. Actually, it felt more comfortable to hold the Galaxy Note 5 compared to the Galaxy S6.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (3)

Samsung has changed their design language this year. Instead of going into removable batteries and expandable storages, they’ve opted for non-removable back and you can just rely on the internal storage or USB OTG. But of course, that compromise came with an added benefit to the smartphone. It’s now using premium materials all over the smartphone and it’s a combination of glass and metal which is really very premium to hold and use.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (7)

The Micro USB port is still placed below the smartphone along with the speaker grill and the 3.5mm audio port and you can also see where you can put the S Pen. Unlike the previous note devices, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 have a different mechanics for S Pen. You have to press the S Pen to remove it and if you’ve reversibly put the S Pen into the hole, you might break the S Pen port.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (5)

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (4)

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 might support Dual Nano Sim but unfortunately, it doesn’t support MicroSD cards which might be a deal-breaker for some people. Nonetheless, expect more flagship devices without expandable storage support soon because it has become a norm,

Display

One thing that I love about Samsung smartphones is its displays because they’re really good. On the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, we got a 5.7-inch QHD Super AMOLED Display and it’s one of the best in the market. The colors were really vivid and it’s really bright even when outside. The display of the Galaxy Note 5 is really beautiful and I enjoy by just looking at its colors LOL.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (6)

One of the advantages of having the Galaxy Note 5 is its S Pen and one small feature that I love in it is you can already write on the display once you remove the S Pen. It’s a small feature on the Galaxy Note 5 but it really affects me on how I use the smartphone. It’s a really an awesome feature on the smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (8)

Software and Performance

The performance of the Exynos processor is impressive on the Galaxy Note 5 but one thing that I hate in the it is it gets too hot especially on the Galaxy S6 but on the Galaxy Note 5, I notice that it doesn’t heat up that much compared to its smaller brother. And yes, when it comes to performance, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 doesn’t disappoint because it can run most games and applications without a problem.

Again, one of the biggest features of the Note series is its S Pen. The pen is very useful especially for those productive who are always on the go. S Pen is really an awesome feature for a smartphone. Gone are the days when you have to pull out a pen and a paper just to take notes because the Galaxy Note 5 is already enough for you.

When taking down notes, the Galaxy Note 5 feels more natural compared to the previous generations. There’s no lag and the pressure sensitivity of the display was accurate. Pulling out a pen from the Galaxy Note 5 already lets you write in the display immediately and yes, it’s fast and it’s perfect for immediate note-taking.

The smartphone is still powered by the TouchWiz UI. It’s flat, colorful and fast. The colors are perfect for the Super AMOLED display of the smartphone. In my usage, I didn’t experience lags and slowdowns which are really good to hear. Lags and slowdowns are some of the reasons why sometimes I prefer a Nexus or iOS device.

One of the compromises that was made on this phablet to make it more premium is its battery. The Galaxy Note 5 features a 3000mAh battery compared to the 3220mAh battery that was used last year. When we base it on the numbers, the Galaxy Note 4 wins even if it’s the older brother but in real life usage, I found the Galaxy Note 5’s battery life performance just similar to the Galaxy Note 4. It’s not surprising and I was able to get a day of normal use. Sometimes, I don’t use my power bank for a day with the Galaxy Note 5.

Camera

The Galaxy Note 5 got one of the best cameras in the smartphone market. Sometimes, I don’t even stopped using my Sony A5000 just for the Galaxy Note 5 because the smartphone’s camera is really good. As expected, the 16 Megapixel rear camera of the smartphone performs great. Whether you’re in low-light conditions or not, the Galaxy Note 5 was really great.

20151214_000155 20151201_124827 20151201_133956

Verdict

The Galaxy Note 5 is definitely one of the best smartphones in the market that you can get right now. For some consumers, they might not always use the S Pen but it’s a really good addition to the smartphone that can change how you use it. Besides, drawing or writing something using the S Pen and the S Note is a great way to get out of boredom while waiting in line or something like that. Again, the Galaxy Note 5 is a great smartphone despite its compromises.
