The HUAWEI nova 13 is a smartphone that combines great features, strong performance, and a sleek design at a reasonable price. Designed for Gen Z and young professionals, it excels in photography, offers fast charging, and delivers an overall smooth user experience. After using it for a while, here’s a detailed breakdown of what the nova 13 has to offer.
HUAWEI nova 13 Review: Design
The design of the HUAWEI nova 13 immediately grabs attention for all the right reasons. We got our hands on the White variant, which is clean, polished, and undeniably sophisticated. The reflective plaid-textured back panel adds a premium touch without looking over the top. It’s a simple yet elegant look that fits various styles.
In terms of build, the phone feels light at just 195g, and the 6.98mm thickness makes it very easy to handle. It has flat edges that give it a modern feel while ensuring a comfortable grip. Despite its slim profile, the device feels sturdy, with no creaks or weak points. The overall aesthetic is minimalist, functional, and appealing to users who prioritize both style and usability.
HUAWEI nova 13 Review: Multimedia
The nova 13 features a 6.7-inch OLED display that is sharp, vivid, and responsive. The display supports a 120Hz refresh rate, which makes scrolling through apps, websites, and social media feeds feel smooth and fluid. The colors are well-balanced, with deep blacks and bright highlights, making it a pleasure to watch videos or browse photos.
The brightness level is good enough to handle outdoor use, even under direct sunlight. Whether you’re streaming your favorite series or playing games, the display offers an immersive experience. HUAWEI’s AI HDR technology further enhances the dynamic range of photos and videos, ensuring clarity in both bright and shadowed areas.
The stereo speakers complement the display, offering clear audio for videos and music. While they aren’t the loudest speakers we’ve tested, they provide decent sound quality for casual use. If you want a better audio experience, we recommend using wireless headphones.
HUAWEI nova 13 Review: Software
The nova 13 runs on HUAWEI’s EMUI 14.2, which feels fast and easy to navigate. While it doesn’t include Google Play Services, the AppGallery has most of the popular apps you need. For apps not available directly in the AppGallery, the GBox feature makes it simple to access and use them.
During our time with the phone, we didn’t encounter any major software issues. Everything ran smoothly, from multitasking to switching between apps. The interface is clean and intuitive, which makes it great for first-time users or those switching from other brands.
The personalization options are another highlight. Features like custom themes and symbol stickers let you make the device your own. Whether you prefer a minimalistic home screen or something more colorful and creative, EMUI gives you the flexibility to customize the look and feel of your device.
HUAWEI nova 13 Review: Performance
Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8020 chipset, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage, the nova 13 delivers smooth performance across most tasks. It handles everyday activities like messaging, social media, and video streaming effortlessly. Apps load quickly, and multitasking feels seamless, even with multiple apps open in the background.
For gaming, the phone performs well with casual titles like Mobile Legends. When playing more demanding games like Call of Duty Mobile, we initially kept the settings at a Very High level, and the performance was solid. However, we noticed the battery drained faster, and the phone became warm after extended sessions. While this is normal for gaming at higher settings, we found it more practical to switch to medium settings for a better balance between performance and battery life.
Here are its benchmark results:
Storage-wise, the 256GB capacity is generous and should be more than enough for most users. Whether you’re saving high-resolution photos, 4K videos, or installing multiple apps, there’s plenty of room to store everything you need.
HUAWEI nova 13 Review: Camera
One of the strongest selling points of the HUAWEI nova 13 is its camera system. The 60MP front ultra-wide portrait camera is perfect for selfies. Whether you’re taking solo shots or group photos, the wide-angle lens ensures everyone fits in the frame. The camera captures sharp, detailed images with natural colors, making it great for social media.
We especially loved the AI Best Expression feature, which automatically selects the best facial expressions in group photos. This eliminates the frustration of dealing with awkward smiles or closed eyes.
We also like its built-in film-like filters, allowing us to level up our photos for our social media feed.
On top of that, the nova 13 includes an AI-powered photo bomber removal feature, which seamlessly edits out distractions in the background. However, we have to admit that it’s not perfect yet, and it’s underwhelming compared to other phones with this feature.
It’s a small yet incredibly useful feature for keeping your photos clean and focused.
The rear camera setup is equally impressive. The 50MP main camera captures stunning photos, even in low light. The wide F1.9 aperture allows more light to enter, resulting in brighter and clearer shots at night or indoors. The 8MP ultra-wide macro lens adds versatility, letting you take detailed close-ups or expansive landscape shots.
One downside we noticed is the selfie camera’s performance in low-light conditions. While the main rear camera handles night shots well, selfies at night often appear blurry and lack the sharpness and clarity you’d expect. For those who frequently take selfies in dim lighting, this could be a limitation.
Despite this, the nova 13’s camera system is versatile and packed with useful features, making it an excellent option for daytime photography and creative shooting.
