The premium smartphone market has become increasingly competitive, but HUAWEI has managed to maintain a distinct identity through one particular strength: smartphone photography.
For years, the company’s Pura and Mate series have pushed camera technology to the forefront, often treating the smartphone as much like a pocketable camera as a communication device. The HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max continues that approach, bringing a 200MP telephoto camera, a large display, flagship-level hardware, and a substantial battery into one of HUAWEI’s most ambitious smartphones yet.
At Php79,999, however, this is firmly a premium device. And at this price, the conversation goes beyond camera quality. The lack of full access to the Google ecosystem remains an important consideration, particularly for users who rely heavily on Google services and popular streaming platforms.
So, after spending time with the Pura 90s Pro Max, the bigger question isn’t simply whether it takes great photos. It’s whether the rest of the experience is strong enough to make the compromises worthwhile.

HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max Review: Design
The HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max makes a strong first impression.
HUAWEI offers the phone in four colours: Orange Ocean, Blaze Purple, Blush Gold, and Graphite Black. Our review unit came in Graphite Black, and this is the variant our team prefers. Instead of relying on a flashy colour to stand out, it has a more understated appearance that suits the phone’s premium positioning.
There is, however, one design element that quickly becomes impossible to ignore, the glossy finish. While the finish looks elegant when the phone is clean, it attracts fingerprints and smudges very easily. After carrying the phone around for a while, we found ourselves wiping the back more often than we’d like. This is why you should always use a proptection case.

Meanwhile, a case is therefore more than just protection, it also helps preserve the clean look of the device. The Pura 90s Pro Max is also a fairly large smartphone. It measures 164mm tall, 77.1mm wide, and 8.1mm thick, while weighing approximately 230.5 grams. For our team, that size is noticeable. One-handed use isn’t particularly comfortable, especially when reaching toward the upper portion of the display. However, the curved edges help make the phone easier to grip, and the weight gives it a reassuringly solid feel rather than making it seem excessively bulky.
Flip the phone around and the camera module immediately takes centre stage. HUAWEI continues the distinctive “forward symbol” camera design introduced with the Pura 70 series. It’s large, prominent, and impossible to mistake for anything else in the smartphone market. Whether you like the styling will ultimately come down to personal preference, but we appreciate that HUAWEI has developed a recognisable visual identity around its camera system.
More importantly, the camera module isn’t simply there for aesthetics. It hints at what the Pura 90s Pro Max considers its main purpose, photography.
HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max Review: Display and Sound
The Pura 90s Pro Max features a 6.9-inch 1.5K LTPO OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, and it quickly became one of our favourite parts of the phone.
The large panel gives photos plenty of room to breathe. This becomes particularly useful when reviewing images taken with the phone’s high-resolution cameras because we can examine details without constantly zooming in or navigating around a smaller screen.
Colours are vibrant, text is sharp, and the 120Hz refresh rate keeps scrolling and animations feeling fluid. Moving between apps, browsing social media, reviewing photos, and watching videos all feel smooth.
Meanwhile, the display’s brightness makes outdoor use much easier.
We spent time using the phone outside under bright conditions, and the screen remained readable even when the sun was working against us. HUAWEI’s anti-reflective treatment also helps reduce distractions from surrounding light. Reflections are still visible under particularly harsh conditions, but they’re less disruptive when we’re trying to frame a photo or quickly check something on screen.
The large display is complemented by a dedicated stereo speaker setup, with speaker grilles positioned at the top and bottom of the phone.
We appreciate this approach because it produces a more convincing stereo experience than relying on the earpiece as the secondary speaker. During our testing, audio remained clear and sufficiently loud for casual gaming, YouTube videos, social media content, and streaming.
Combined with the large OLED panel, the speakers make the Pura 90s Pro Max a surprisingly enjoyable multimedia device.
HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max Review: Performance
The Pura 90s Pro Max is powered by the Kirin 9030S chipset and Maleoon 935 GPU, paired with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
On paper, the Kirin 9030S sits in an interesting position within HUAWEI’s lineup. However, looking at specifications alone doesn’t tell the entire story. In our day-to-day use, the Pura 90s Pro Max feels like a premium smartphone should, responsive, quick, and capable of handling demanding applications without constantly reminding us that we’re pushing the hardware.
Apps open quickly, multitasking feels smooth, and switching between photography, messaging, social media, and other applications doesn’t present any major problems.
The phone can also handle gaming.
Benchmark Scores:

We tested demanding titles such as Genshin Impact, and the Pura 90s Pro Max was capable of running them at high graphical settings. At the highest settings, however, the phone does get warm during extended sessions.
For us, the better balance is to drop the graphics slightly to High or Medium. The difference in visual quality isn’t substantial enough to justify the additional heat, particularly when playing for longer periods.
This is a useful reminder that flagship hardware doesn’t necessarily mean every game should be pushed to its maximum setting. The Pura 90s Pro Max has enough performance for demanding games, but finding the right balance between graphics, temperature, and sustained performance provides a better overall experience.
HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max Review: Software
The Pura 90s Pro Max runs EMUI 16, and the software experience feels considerably more mature than HUAWEI’s early post-Google years.
Navigation is straightforward, animations are responsive, and there are plenty of customisation options. After using the phone for an extended period, we didn’t find ourselves fighting with the interface. It generally stays out of the way and lets us get things done.
App availability, however, remains the elephant in the room.

HUAWEI’s AppGallery has improved significantly, and finding commonly used applications is much less difficult than it once was. For everyday social media, productivity, entertainment, and local apps, there are plenty of options available.
However, users who are deeply invested in Google’s ecosystem should still think carefully before making the switch.
This is particularly relevant for people who rely on services such as Google apps or expect full compatibility with popular streaming platforms. For example, the inability to stream 4K content through certain popular streaming services such as Netflix can be disappointing when paired with such a capable 6.9-inch OLED display.
That doesn’t make the phone unusable. In fact, our team was able to handle most everyday tasks without major issues. We were also able to download most Google apps through Gbox, a secure app you can download on HUAWEI AppGallery. With this, you can have YouTube, Google Maps, and other Google native apps.
HUAWEI also includes Celia AI, its built-in AI assistant. It can handle everyday questions and tasks, and we found it useful for certain practical requests. One particularly interesting capability is its integration with supported services, including the ability to assist with tasks such as booking transportation through compatible ride-hailing applications.
For biometrics, the phone offers optical face unlock alongside a side-mounted fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button. Both worked reliably during our testing, giving us two convenient ways to unlock the device.
HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max Review: Camera
This is where the Pura 90s Pro Max earns its name.
The rear camera system consists of a 50MP main camera with PDAF and OIS, a 40MP ultra-wide camera with autofocus, and a 200MP Ultra Large Sensor Telephoto Camera with PDAF and OIS. On the front, there’s a 13MP in-display selfie camera.
But the number that immediately grabs attention is 200MP.
The telephoto camera is the star of the show, and we quickly found ourselves using it more than we initially expected.
At around 4x zoom, the camera produces a useful perspective for portraits, buildings, travel photography, and everyday subjects. Images retain plenty of detail without looking excessively processed.
Going to around 10x is where things become particularly interesting. In good lighting, the Pura 90s Pro Max continues to preserve an impressive amount of detail, allowing us to photograph distant subjects without immediately getting the soft, overly digital results we often see from smartphone zoom.
Even beyond 20x, the camera can produce surprisingly usable images under the right conditions. It’s obviously not the same as having a dedicated optical lens for every focal length, but the amount of information the phone can retain means we could capture details that would otherwise require physically getting much closer.
This makes the Pura 90s Pro Max particularly useful for travel. Instead of constantly moving toward a distant building, sign, stage, or architectural detail, we could simply reach for the zoom.
The main camera is equally capable in everyday situations.

HUAWEI’s True-to-Colour Camera 2.0 is designed to produce colours that stay closer to the original scene rather than simply increasing saturation to make photos look more dramatic. We noticed this particularly in outdoor scenes where excessive processing can easily make skies look unnaturally blue or greenery look overly vivid.
Dynamic range is also strong.
When shooting scenes with bright skies and darker foregrounds, the camera does a good job retaining information in both areas. This becomes especially noticeable during sunsets, where maintaining highlight detail is often difficult for smartphone cameras.
Low-light photography is another area where the Pura 90s Pro Max performs confidently.
The main camera captures plenty of light while keeping noise under control, while the stabilisation system helps when we’re shooting handheld. More surprisingly, the telephoto remains useful in darker environments instead of becoming something we’d immediately avoid once the sun goes down.
For us, that’s what makes the camera system impressive. It’s not simply about having a 200MP sensor. The different cameras remain useful across a range of situations, which makes the Pura 90s Pro Max feel more like a complete photography tool.

HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max Review: Battery
The Pura 90s Pro Max comes with a 6,000mAh battery, which gives it enough capacity to comfortably handle a full day of demanding use.
Our typical usage involved a combination of photography, mobile data, social media, navigation, messaging, and general browsing. Even with those activities, the phone proved dependable throughout the day.
Heavy camera use can obviously put more pressure on the battery, particularly when we’re shooting at high resolutions or using the telephoto camera extensively. However, the large battery gives us considerably more breathing room before needing to look for a charger.
PCMark Battery Life Test Result:

HUAWEI also supports 100W wired charging, 80W wireless charging, and 18W reverse-wired charging, along with reverse-wireless charging.
The combination is particularly useful for people who are constantly moving between home, work, and travel. Wired charging provides the fastest way to get back up to speed, while wireless charging is convenient when we’re working at a desk or resting at home.
Reverse charging is also handy when another compatible device needs a quick boost.

Verdict
The HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max is priced at Php79,999 in the Philippines for the 12GB + 512GB configuration. This puts it squarely among premium flagship smartphones.
The 200MP telephoto camera is the phone’s defining feature. However, it’s the way the entire camera system works together that impressed us. The 50MP main camera, 40MP ultra-wide, long-range zoom capabilities, strong stabilisation, and True-to-Colour Camera 2.0 give us a versatile setup that can handle everything from everyday snapshots to distant subjects and challenging lighting.
It’s also more than just a camera. The 6.9-inch 1.5K 120Hz LTPO OLED display, Kirin 9030S processor, 12GB RAM, 512GB storage, 6,000mAh battery, and 100W wired/80W wireless charging make it a capable flagship for everyday use.
