Huawei has been very aggressive in its Y series. Not only that these smartphones pack a great price, but the Huawei Y series smartphones also have good specs and hardware inside like the one we’re reviewing today, the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019. This might be a budget smartphone but it does have a lot of improvements over the Huawei Y6 2018 that we praised before in our review.

Design and construction

The Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 is built in a plastic body which doesn’t feel premium at all but the rounded corners of the smartphone to help make the smartphone feel comfortable to hold even if I use the smartphone in one hand.

The design of the smartphone is a big upgrade from the predecessor as we got a dewdrop notch now. The back panel is made up of glossy plastic but it does look like glass from afar.

The smartphone doesn’t lack anything when it comes to ports as this one comes with a triple card tray so you can use your MicroSD card and also your other two sim cards and then there’s the micro USB port below and a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top.

Again, the smartphone does feel fine to hold although and it does have a good ergonomics, however, the choice of their build as a glossy plastic might not be the best choice for me but the looks of it are just fine along with its simple but fine back with a no-nonsense design.

Display

The Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 also has a better display than the predecessor. The Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 does have a 6.09-inch display with HD+ resolution. Well, it isn’t the best display even for its price range but it does its job well. The colors were fine enough for me especially for a smartphone priced like this.

There’s the dewdrop notch at the top too and I really appreciate it as Huawei has opted for this one instead of having a really wide notch at the top. This means that the notch is only blocking a tiny part of the screen. But if you’re still annoyed with that, you can turn that off on the settings. While we do have the notch at the top, there’s still the bezel below which is expected since this one is just an entry-level smartphone. There is the tiny bezel on the sides too and it looks just fine to me.

The screen is just fine for an entry-level smartphone. Its brightness and colors were fine and the screen is readable outdoors. So yeah, I really don’t have any qualms with the display of the smartphone knowing that this is just an entry-level smartphone.

Battery life

The Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 packs a 3020mAh battery life and we got a decent battery life from it. In PC Mark, we managed to get a score of 10 hours and 45 minutes which is really impressive.

Software

The Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 runs on EMUI 9.0.1 with Android 9 Pie. If you’re familiar with Huawei interface,  this one wouldn’t confuse you. It still comes with a lot of applications preinstalled such as the phone manager, App Gallery, and some more preinstalled applications that some of you might not use like HiCare and Ride Mode. Of course, there’s the digital balance that I loved on my Huawei P20 Pro running on EMUI 9.

Performance

The Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 switched to MediaTek from Snapdragon in the Huawei Y6 2018. Is it a good choice? Well, actually it is. The performance is a lot better compared to the predecessor. Navigating on the menu and opening a lot of apps is a lot different compared to the predecessors as I can barely feel the slowdowns on the smartphone which is a plus.

In our benchmarks, we were able to play some games including Mobile Legends that ran well on the smartphone and also games like PUBG Mobile which is a little bit more demanding. In our benchmarks, we got these scores:

PUBG Mobile – Balanced graphics – Medium FPS

Well, the MediaTek Helio A22 SoC isn’t really that powerful but it’s more than enough for some basic apps and it can run some games. In PUBG Mobile, we can get a median FPS of 24 which means that you can run the game but it’s not really playable as it is an FPS shooter. But yeah, at least you can still play with it when you’re bored.

Real Racing 3

In Real Racing 3, we were surprised that it can only run at 23 fps however, it’s a racing game so the game is still playable.

AxE

AxE is one of the newest game in the Play Store and it does have a really powerful and beautiful graphics but the smartphone was still able to run it however, it’s only at 17fps.

Overall, the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 did just well for its price range. It’s not the best one but it definitely can run most games these days and there no problems running basic apps on this one.

Camera

The Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 still got a single rear camera but this time, we got an f/1.8 aperture which means that you can have brighter images and better bokeh. Actually, most of the shots that we took using the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 is a little bit surprising for me as we got really good shots on the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019.

Well, it’s not a perfect camera but everything was really good on the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 and I really appreciate with what Huawei has made on this smartphone.

Verdict

The Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 is definitely a great entry-level Android smartphone. It’s a big upgrade compared to the predecessor which is the Huawei Y6 2018 and this time, we got a big upgrade on the camera which is now an f1.8 rear camera and the battery life on the smartphone is really well.

However, there’s no dual lens camera on the smartphone which is why the smartphone lacks portrait mode or bokeh mode and the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 still uses a plastic body which might be a disappointment for some people.

The Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 is now available for Php6,990.
