Google has unveiled today their newest platform that will compete with Meta’s VR headsets and also the Apple Vision Pro and it’s called the Android XR OS. This new operating system from Google will bring Virtual Reality, Augmented reality, and mixed reality in the headsets. This is why it’s called Android XR or Extended Reality as it can power up different product form factors.
The Android XR will basically bring Android apps and even the Play Store to the headset and interact with it with spatial reality. Basically, you can use the Android XR-powered headsets as your main computer or smartphone which basically is futuristic. You can run apps such as YouTube, Maps, and many more and it takes advantage of its ability to recognize the surroundings and use it for different apps.
According to Google, Gemini AI will be one of the main features of this as it will require voice recognition for its input aside from hand inputs.
The Android XR details are still scarced but Google and Samsung are already working on a headset that will be available next year.
