Sony has officially introduced PS5 AI upscaling with the launch of Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). The new machine learning technology brings temporal super resolution directly to the standard PlayStation 5 console.
Developed in close collaboration with AMD under Project Amethyst, QSSR can deliver cleaner image reconstruction and sharper 4K visuals on base hardware and not just on the Pro version of PS5. Players no longer need a PS5 Pro to experience neural upscaling in supported titles.

Project Amethyst and the Neural Architecture Behind QSSR
Unlike PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) which utilizes dedicated AI tensor cores on PS5 Pro, QSSR relies on a streamlined neural network architecture. Sony and AMD hand-tuned the model to run efficiently on standard RDNA 2 compute units.
The lightweight algorithm processes frame history and motion vectors with an inference budget of just 1.2 milliseconds. This ensures that graphics fidelity improves substantially without introducing perceptible input latency or frame pacing stutters.
Launch Titles: Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei
Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions are among the first first-party PlayStation studios to showcase QSSR integration in upcoming titles.
In Marvel’s Wolverine, QSSR reconstructs character hair strands, dynamic claw reflections, and busy background geometry with crisp clarity while sustaining a rock-solid 60 frames per second.

Sucker Punch noted that foliage, particle sparks, and wind effects in Ghost of Yōtei show significantly less temporal shimmering. The algorithm resolves high-frequency geometry details that previously appeared blurred under standard TAA solutions.

Comparing QSSR on Base PS5 Versus PSSR on PS5 Pro
While both technologies aim to maximize frame rates and visual fidelity, they target distinct hardware pipelines. PSSR takes advantage of dedicated machine learning accelerators on PS5 Pro for heavier mathematical models.
In contrast, QSSR utilizes AMD compute shader math to execute efficiently on standard PS5 hardware. Developers can integrate both algorithms through a unified API within the PlayStation Software Development Kit.
Rollout Schedule, SDK Access, and Future Game Updates
Sony confirmed that QSSR is fully integrated into the latest PlayStation SDK released to licensed third-party studios worldwide. Several partner developers are already working on bringing QSSR patches to existing and upcoming titles.
Base PS5 owners can download the latest game patches right now to experience QSSR enhancement firsthand. More supported games will be revealed throughout the coming months as developers adopt the toolset.
