Hardware startup New Matter has officially unveiled the Sudo music player, a minimalist dedicated audio device built purely for distraction-free listening. The portable player revives the charm of classic pocket music devices especially the iPod.
Priced at an expected $249 USD, the handheld player prioritizes tactile navigation and high-capacity storage. It aims to give listeners a dedicated sanctuary away from smartphone alerts and social media noise.
Dedicated Hardware and the Tactile Control Wheel
Inside the Sudo music player is a tactile wheel reminiscent of iconic early iPod. Users can spin the wheel to browse extensive album catalogs or control playback volume with mechanical precision.
Complementing the mechanical wheel is a 2.73-inch square LCD touchscreen running at a crisp 320 by 320 resolution. The compact screen handles gestures, album art displays, and track selections while preserving an uncluttered interface.

Measuring just 8.5 millimeters thin and weighing minimally, the aluminum chassis slips easily into pockets. Its pocketable form factor makes it ideal for daily commutes, workouts, and focused evening listening sessions.
Offline Library, Streaming Playback, and Sudo OS
New Matter engineered the device to run on Sudo OS, a lightweight operating system designed exclusively for audio playback. The custom software boots instantly and avoids background apps or battery-draining notification daemons.
For audio connectivity, the player includes a standard 3.5 millimeter headphone jack for wired audiophile headphones. Listeners also have Bluetooth support for pairing wireless earbuds, headphones, and portable speakers.

The unit comes equipped with 64GB of internal flash storage for thousands of local audio files. A dedicated microSD card slot allows listeners to expand library storage by up to an additional 1TB.
Beyond offline tracks, the device supports modern streaming capabilities over wireless networks. Listeners can enjoy their favorite cloud streaming services alongside high-resolution lossless local files.
Hardware Specifications and Feature Breakdown
Battery longevity is another highlight of the device, promising more than 20 hours of continuous music playback on a single charge. Recharging takes place through a universal USB-C port on the bottom edge.
