It is official. BYD is officially launching passenger vehicle sales in Canada in late 2026. Executive Vice President Stella Li confirmed the rollout timeline on Threads, stating that the company’s import permit applications opened on March 1, 2026.
20 Dealerships Planned in Year 1
To support the launch, BYD is planning a major retail push with over 20 dealerships planned across the country within their first year of operations. The expansion will start in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) before rolling out to Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, and Ottawa.
This aggressive expansion is facilitated by a recent trade deal that established a 6.1% tariff rate on Chinese-made electric vehicles.
Phase 1 Launch Models: Atto 3, Seal, and Dolphin

For the initial launch in late 2026, BYD is bringing three of its most popular global electric vehicles to Canadian buyers. The first phase lineup includes the Atto 3 compact SUV, the Seal sports sedan, and the Dolphin hatchback.
A second phase is scheduled to roll out in the following months. This will introduce the highly anticipated Seagull city car, expected to start at an affordable C$25,000, along with the Shark 6 pickup truck which will be a popular contender against the F150, Silverado, RAM 1500 and GMC Sierra

Advanced Blade Battery and Extreme Winter Performance
Canadian winter conditions have been a major focus of BYD’s engineering efforts. The vehicles feature a second-generation Blade Battery and a wide-temperature heat pump capable of operating down to -30 degrees celsius.
Even in extreme cold, the battery can charge from 20% to 97% in just 12 minutes. Independent tests show the BYD Sealion 7, which is also on the radar for Canada, loses only about 16% of its driving range at -30 degrees Celsius.
