Samsung aims to ship 20M foldable phones in 2024

Samsung is reportedly setting targets for the sale of foldable phones in 2024, with a goal of shipping 20 million units. This move comes as the South Korean tech giant seeks to expand its presence in the foldable smartphone market.

Shipment Targets for 2023 and 2024

In 2023, Samsung’s initial target was to ship 16 million foldable phones. Meanwhile, this year, the company is expected to reach a total shipment of 10 million units, comprising 3 million Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 units and 7 million of the current two models.

For 2024, the focus appears to be on achieving a significant leap in sales with a 20 million unit target. This ambitious goal also encompasses sales of the existing models, including the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5, along with the next generation of foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6, set to be released in the coming year.

Design Challenges and Expectations for 2024

Samsung’s journey in the foldable smartphone market has not been without criticisms. The company’s foldable devices have often been noted for their creases and the aspect ratio of the cover display. Meanwhile, to address these concerns and to stay competitive in the market, Samsung is reportedly planning a major redesign for the Galaxy Z Fold6 in 2024.

Google Pixel 8 devices reportedly arrive with unlocked bootloaders, posing security concerns

Some Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphone buyers have encountered an unexpected issue: their new devices arrived with unlocked bootloaders. This peculiar situation was reported on Reddit, although it appears to be relatively limited in scope, given that such matters usually gain widespread attention online.

The unlocked bootloaders on these Pixel 8 devices come with a warning message during the boot process. This alerts users to the situation’s implications for software integrity and data security:

“The bootloader is unlocked, and software integrity cannot be guaranteed. Any data stored on the device may be available to attackers. Do not store any sensitive data on the device.”

While an unlocked bootloader is not a significant problem for everyone, it does raise concerns about data privacy and security. Financial applications and services may refuse to run on devices with unlocked bootloaders due to security considerations.

Understanding Bootloaders

For those unfamiliar with bootloaders, they are small software components responsible for initiating the device’s boot process and loading the operating system (in this case, Android). To make advanced changes at the operating system level, such as installing patches, mods, or a different ROM, users typically need an unlocked bootloader.

A Limited Issue with Potential Solutions

The full extent of this issue is yet to be determined, but it seems to be a limited occurrence. In theory, the problem can be resolved by users through a computer and an ADB connection to the phone. However, it would not be reasonable for Google to require customers to perform these steps. According to reports, Google provides replacement units to affected customers, but this process involves lengthy support conversations.

This unexpected occurrence adds to the list of unique “quirks” that Google Pixel phones sometimes exhibit. It also raised questions about how such situations arise with these devices.

OPPO Find N3 Flip First Impressions Video

OPPO has just unveiled their newest smartphone in the market — the OPPO Find N3 Flip. This smartphone aims to compete with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. The N3 Flip features a vertical cover display just like the previous generation but this time, it packs a more powerful Hasselblad-branded camera at the back.

Since this is a flip smartphone, it does have a pocket-sized design that is really portable and with its vertical cover display, you can do a lot more as more apps are now supported on the cover display of the smartphone.

Samsung users have something to cheer about as the company expands its One UI 6 beta program. The Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 get the One UI 6 Beta, giving them early access to Android 14.

One UI 6 Beta Access in South Korea

Samsung has now activated the beta program for these two foldable devices, starting in its home market of South Korea. For eager users located in South Korea, accessing the One UI 6 beta is a straightforward process. Simply navigate to the Samsung Members app and look for the prominent One UI 6 banner at the top of the screen. Click on it and provide the requested details. Once you’ve completed this step, proceed to your device’s Settings, select Software update, and initiate the Download and install option. This will trigger the over-the-air update, delivering the latest One UI 6 beta based on Android 14 to your device.

Meanwhile, it’s important to keep in mind that this update will likely require approximately 3GB of storage space. Therefore, ensure that your device has enough available storage, and make sure you’re connected to a network that can facilitate a swift download to avoid extended waiting times.

Stable Release in the Works

While the beta program brings early access and allows users to experience the new features and improvements in One UI 6, Samsung is also diligently preparing the first stable release of One UI 6 for its Galaxy S23 family. This update is expected to make its debut within the coming weeks.

Unlike the previous generation, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 features a more powerful camera. Night shots are amazing too

Most of the shots that we took were brighter and clearer after the processing and despite low light shots, it was sharper than expected. The colors and the lights blend perfectly as well.

Transcend ESD310S Portable SSD Review

If you’re looking for a budget SSD that won’t break the bank and is also portable then you might want to take a look at the Transcend ESD310S SSD. It’s one of the smallest SSDs that we’ve seen but despite that, it still offers fast transfer speeds.

Design

The Transcend ESD310S comes in a compact and lightweight design. Actually, the design makes it look like that the portable SSD is just a typical flash drive. With its size, you can definitely bring it anywhere and it can even fit inside your pocket or your small pouches.

It comes with a metal body and also a solid premium feel into it. It also comes with two connectors with covers to protect it. There’s a USB Type-A and also a USB Type-C. This means that you have the flexibility to use it on a phone like the iPhone 15, iPad and other USB-C devices and also on desktops and laptops with the USB Type-A.

The good thing about this one is that you need a cable anymore and a smartphone is already enough to power this one unlike other SSDs which don’t work with mobile devices. Since this one comes with a USB-C port, you can also plug it in your PS5 and even install PS4 games on the portable SSD. We didn’t have any problems installing PS4 games on the SSD and it was pretty fast.

Performance

When it comes to performance, Transcend promises 10Gbps transfer rate with SLC Cache technology. They’re promising a read/write speeds of up to 1050/950 MB/s/. That’s very typical on portable SSDs but how does this one perform despite the small size?

In AS SSD benchmark, the read and write speeds that we got were quite near to the promised speeds by Transcend and if you ask me, I’m pretty happy with this result.

In ATTO Disk Benchmark, we got an up to 1017 MB/s and up to 932 MB/s read and write speeds respectively. This one is really fast and pretty consistent when it comes to speed.

With CrystalDiskMark, we got a read score of 1070 MB/s and a write speed of 981 MB/s which is pretty consistent with the speeds that we’re getting from other benchmarks.

Despite the size of the Transcend ESD310S, the temps were pretty good on this one and it only reached up to 48.9c in our usage after transferring multiple files.

Verdict

The Transcend ESD310S is a portable SSD that is made for those people who want a fast and large storage with a fast speed. There’s a dual interface as well which works perfectly on both mobile devices and also on laptops and PCs. The performance was pretty good as well and it was also consistent.

So if you’re looking for an SSD that you can use for work, school, gaming, mobile, or office. I highly suggest the Transcend ESD310S Portable SSD. It works on almost all devices and it’s pretty fast and consistent as well.
