Vivo Y71 Review: Budget Android Smartphone for Everyone

0

When it comes to affordable Android smartphones, the Vivo Y series is one of the most popular Android smartphones out there. It offers an affordable price and yet a decent hardware and experience that fits mostly to the consumers. Interested with this affordable smartphone from Vivo? Then check out our review below.

Design and Hardware

The Vivo Y71 is an affordable smartphone and I’m not surprised that the company opted to have a plastic build on this one. Yes, the smartphone has a plastic build but it doesn’t have squeaks or any flexing issues. You can just feel that the smartphone has a pretty good build quality despite having a plastic build.

At the back is where you can see the Vivo logo. It actually looks clean at the back and not the smartphone has a curved unibody design that fits well in my hand and has a comfortable and ergonomic design.

The still sports a micro USB port below along with the 3.5mm audio jack while the volume rocker and the power button of the smartphone are placed on the same side. The smartphone also sports a triple card tray so you can use two sim cards and a microSD card on the smartphone.

Noticeably, the smartphone is missing a fingerprint scanner on this one. Yes, they don’t have that one on this smartphone instead, the Vivo Y71 utilizes the face unlock technology of the smartphone. Speaking of face unlock, it works slowly compared to other smartphones but it can be managed to unlock the smartphone using face unlock most of the time except at really low light conditions.

Display

One of the bets things of having this smartphone is its display. The Vivo Y71 has a 6-inch HD+ display with a resolution of 1440×720. It’s not as good as the Vivo V9 but you’ll be happy to have a large 6-inch display on this smartphone. Don’t worry too much about its large display because it doesn’t feel big to the hand because of the18:9 display aspect ratio.

Despite only having an HD resolution, the display of the smartphone looks fine to me. I’m actually pretty happy with its display despite having that resolution. The colors are just fine and also the viewing angles. Overall, it was just a fine HD display. But if you’re used to high-resolution displays then that might be a problem.

Software

The Vivo Y71 is running on Android 8.1 Oreo with FunTouch OS 4.0. The looks of the UI is clean and it’s also pretty fast. I actually like the interface of the smartphone as I can easily access different features by just swiping up from the bottom and just check only my notifications when swiping down from the top.

Of course, the smartphone comes with some bloatware but the smartphone also comes with some pretty useful application called iManager that lets you optimize your usage of the smartphone. There’s also a new feature called Motorbike Mode which is similar to the Driving mode that lets you auto reject calls and respond a text.

Performance

One of the things to like about the Vivo Y71 is that the smartphone uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chip. The chip is not new but it is mostly seen on smartphones with an affordable price tag. Well, the Vivo Y71 didn’t fail to deliver to my expectations. Yes, it isn’t the most powerful chipset in the market but it can applications without problems and also some modern games.

Games like PUBG Mobile can run on the smartphone however you’re stuck with the lowest settings and only up to medium frame rate. Heavy scenes will also give you noticeable frame drops unfortunately but overall, games like PUBG Mobile and Rules of Survival will just work well on the smartphone and yes, it’s playable.

Battery Life

Another good thing about this smartphone is its battery life. We got a 3360mAh of battery inside the smartphone and in our PC Mark Work 2.0 test, we got a battery life of 8 hours 56 minutes which is pretty good.

Camera

The Vivo Y71 has a 13-megapixel rear camera along with LED Flash. It also packs a 5-megapixel front camera shooter with a lot of available modes. As expected, the smartphone doesn’t have the same AI functionalities of the Vivo V9. Well, the rear camera of the smartphone is just what I expected on an affordable Android smartphone. Most of the shots that I took were sharper than I expected and sometimes, I do get the right colors. However, at low-light, it’s hit-and-miss. I noticed that skin tones are a little bit different alow light and the colors of the shots weren’t that great. Check out the shots that I took using the smartphone below.

The selfie camera of the smartphone was pretty nice. I liked the sharpness of it and the portrait bokeh works pretty well for an affordable smartphone.

Verdict

The Vivo Y71 caters to the budget market. It’s for the people who are just looking for a smartphone but doesn’t need a really powerful hardware inside but don’t worry because the Snapdragon 425 inside is still enough for most apps and some games. The camera of the smartphone isn’t disappointing too and we do have a pretty good battery life on this one. However, you might be turned off with its lack of fingerprint scanner.

The Vivo Y71 3GB is now available for Php8,990

Which is the Best OPPO F7 Smartphone for you: OPPO F7 vs. F7 Youth vs. F7 128GB

1

There are three variants of the OPPO F7 that are available in the Philippines and each OPPO F7 smartphone caters different set of users. The three OPPO F7 smartphones are the OPPO F7 Youth which is the most affordable of them all, the base model which is the OPPO F7 and the OPPO F7 128GB that packs a larger storage and also a bigger 6GB RAM. So which one is the right OPPO F7 smartphone for you? Well, check it out on our comparison below.

Hardware

Both the OPPO F7 and the OPPO F7 128GB are both identical to each other however the OPPO F7 Youth features a different design as the more affordable version of the OPPO F7 doesn’t pack a notch. Yep, it’s just an 18:9 display aspect ratio which reminds me of the previous OPPO F5. But don’t worry all of them features a good display and the display aspect ratio difference isn’t really a problem.

The design of all the OPPO smartphones features a glass-like back. It looks premium and all of them are really light to the hand which is a plus for me. The smartphones are available in striking colors but my most favorite of them all is the diamond black one that has a diamond pattern at the back which is really pleasing to the eye.

Only the OPPO F7 and the OPPO F7 128GB features a fingerprint scanner at the back and like what I’ve said in my review, the fingerprint scanner of the smartphone is fast while the OPPO F7 Youth doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner. Yes, you can only rely on the face unlock on the OPPO F7 Youth.

Fortunately, despite the lack of the fingerprint scanner on the OPPO F7 Youth, all of the smartphones have a fast face unlock recognition. Actually, these smartphones are one of the fastest that I’ve tried on an Android smartphone.

Performance

The smartphones pack a surprising hardware inside as all of the OPPO F7 smartphones features an Helio P60 Processor inside. Yep. All of them. The OPPO F7 Youth and the OPPO F7 features a 4GB of RAM while the OPPO F7 128GB features a 6GB of RAM.

While some of you might say that there’s not much difference between the 4GB and the 6GB RAM, well, I’ve noticed that the transitions are smoother on the 6GB variant and the applications that are being loaded are faster on the more expensive variant. However, in Antutu, I’ve noticed that the smartphones have really near scores to each other.

Camera

Regarding the camera, the OPPO F7 and the OPPO F7 128GB does have the almost similar quality to each other while the OPPO F7 Youth has less attractive shots, it still does its job. Check out the shots that I took using the smartphone.

Verdict

All of the OPPO F7 Series smartphones are great for its price. The best thing about them is that all of the smartphones features the same processor which means that if you’re only looking for a smartphone for gaming, then the OPPO F7 Youth will do just fine as the smartphone packs a 4GB of RAM and also a MediaTek Helio P60 processor inside but if you want a fine OPPO F7 experience with better camera and added fingerprint scanner security then get the base model but if you love storing videos or other media files and apps on your smartphone then the 128GB variant is the one for you.

The OPPO F7 series smartphones are now available at these prices:

OPPO F7 Youth – PHP13,990

OPPO F7 – Php17,990

OPPO F7 128GB – Php21,990

Microsoft Unveils the Affordable Surface Go Laptop

0

Surface devices from Microsoft are one of the best Windows notebooks and 2-in-1s out there. Not only that they offer a premium design but every aspect of their devices are really different compared to other manufacturers but most of them are really expensive but today, Microsoft has announced a new notebook that will cater to the education market and it will go ahead against the iPad and also Chromebooks.

The tablet will not come with the keyboard and pen and you have to purchase it separately. The Surface Go comes with a 10-inch display with 1800×1200 resolution and a Pentium Gold 4415Y processor and a smaller 64GB eMMC storage. But of course, it will still come with an 8-megapixel rear camrea and 5-megapixel front camera, a Surface Connect magnetic charging and dock port, a MicroSDXC card reader, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB 3.1 Type-C port. The Surface Go will come with Windows 10 S but you have the option to switch it to Windows 10.

I’m a Surface Pro 3 user and I love everything about it. The build quality and its design is really a game changer and I will not be surprised if the Surface Go will be a good tablet. I also expect that the Pentium Gold processor will run almost similar to a Core i3 Processor of the last generation.

Unfortunately, Surface Go will not be available in the Philippines and you have to rely on grey market sellers to get one. The Microsoft Surface Go will be available for $399 (Php21,337~) while the Surface Go Type Covers are available for $99 and $129 for the Alcantara versions. The Surface Go will also be available with integrated LTE and 256GB SSD soon.

Huawei Nova 3 Launching this July 28 in the Philippines?

8

A new ad has appeared in Glorietta and it seems that Huawei is teasing their next smartphone. Our guess? it might be the Huawei Nova 3 that was teased by Huawei at Weibo. As seen in the teaser, the smartphone packs a notch similar to the Huawei P20 Lite and also a dual lens camera at the back with AI.

According to leaks, the Huawei Nova 3 will sport an Octa-Core processor, a 6.3-inch display, a 6GB of RAM and 64/128GB of internal storage. It was also suggested that the camera consists of a 16-megapixel rear camera with a 24-megapixel secondary rear camera. The front will rock a 24-megapixel + 2-megapixel front camera and the battery of the smartphone is rated at 3,650mAh.

So why do we think that the teaser is for the Huawei Nova 3? Well, look closely at the “coming soon” in the ad. It has the same colors on the one displayed on the screen of the Huawei Nova 3.

Well, the device isn’t officially out yet but at least we already have a date for the next hottest mid-range smartphone in the market.
