Cherry Mobile Cosmos Series Phones Launched

Lineup
Lineup

Cherry Mobile launched this Wednesday of their newest line-up of quad-core packing with an astounding BSI cameras. These new Android phones from Cherry Mobile are really at par with international standards. When you look in the dictionary, the Cosmos is bigger than the Galaxy LOL. Anyway, there were 4 Cosmos phones that was launched last Wednesday and all of those phones packs a Quad-Core processor and an amazing screen. These Cherry Mobile Cosmos phones are really powerful devices with a very reasonable price. Why don’t you check out my hands-on with these phones after the break.

Cherry Mobile Cosmos X

This is currently the most affordable of the Cherry Mobile Cosmos phones. And yes, the phone still packs a blazing 1.2 GHz Quad-Core processor from MediaTek. Actually, the specifications of this phone is on par with most top-tier local branded phones. But the feature that set this phone apart from any other phones is the 4.7” Super AMOLED HD screen. If you can still remember, the Samsung Galaxy S3, uses this kind of display. This phone has a 18 Megapixel BSI Camera and a 8 Megapixel front camera too. I like the simple design of the phone and its on-screen buttons but the speaker grill at the back made the phone look like a bit feminine. The SRP of the phone is P9,999 and we’ve confirmed that the phone is now available at Cherry Angel. Check out my hands-on and the specifications of the Cherry Mobile Cosmos X below:

  • Android Jelly Bean 4.2
  • 1.2 GHz MediaTek 6589 Quad-Core Processor
  • 4.7″ Super AMOLED HD (on-cell) Screen – Gorilla Glass 2 | 5-point
  • HSPA+ | 3G | Wi-Fi b/g/n | Bluetooth | GPS
  • Dual SIM (1 Standard SIM and 1 Micro SIM)
  • 18 MP BSI Rear Camera with Flash | 8 MP BSI Camera Front
  • 4 GB ROM | 1 GB RAM (Micro SD up to 32GB)
  • 1800 mAh Battery Capacity
  • 135*69.7*7.9mm
  • Miracast Wireless Display Wi-Fi Direct Ready

Cherry Mobile Cosmos S

This is the thinnest Cosmos phone but the phone still packs a faster 1.5 GHz Quad-Core Mediatek processor and it was able to punch in a 2500 mAh inside. I know, the numbers were good but of course, a real review of the phone could test how long the phone can last. The Super AMOLED HD display was ditched on this phone, Instead it has a 5” HD-IPS display. It’s actually not bad and the phone was still blazing fast. I think the main selling point of this phone is the sexy and thin body. If you ask me which of the cosmos phones should I buy, I’ll choose this one over the 3 phones. And before I forgot, the phone has a metal back cover too. That made the phone more premium. I must warn you guys that the Cherry Mobile Cosmos S only supports Single Sim and it doesn’t have a MicroSD Card slot. The SRP of the Cherry Mobile Cosmos S is P10,999.Yep, It’s not a candidate for TJ’s Next Top Dual Sim model. Check out the Hands-on and the specs of the phone below:

  • Android Jelly Bean 4.2
  • 1.5 GHz MediaTek 6589T Quad-Core Processor
  • 5″ HD-IPS OGS (One Glass Solution) Screen – Dragon Trail Glass | 5-point
  • HSPA+ | 3G | Wi-Fi b/g/n | Bluetooth | GPS
  • Single SIM
  • 18 MP BSI Rear Camera with Flash | 8 MP BSI Front Camera
  • 16 GB ROM | 1 GB RAM
  • Non-Removable 2500 mAh Battery Capacity
  • 147*72.1*6.98mm
  • Miracast Wireless Display Wi-Fi Direct Ready
Cherry Mobile Cosmos S vs. iPod Touch 5th Gen

    Cherry Mobile Cosmos X2

At first glance, It already reminded me of the Samsung Galaxy S3. Despite the X2 in its name, that doesn’t mean that the phone packs a dual-core processor. Actually, the phone packs a 1.2 GHz Quad-Core MediaTek processor paired with a 4.8” Super AMOLED HD display that supports 10 point multi-touch. This phone is kinda similar to the Samsung Galaxy S3. Actually, the Super AMOLED HD used on this phone is exactly the same with the one used in the Samsung Galaxy S3. And yes, just like the Cosmos S and Cosmos X, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos X2 runs smoothly. The SRP of the Cherry Mobile Cosmos X2 is P11,699. Why don’t you check out the specifications of the phone and its hands-on video below:

    • Android Jelly Bean 4.2
    • 1.2 GHz MediaTek 6589 Quad-Core Processor
    • 4.8″ Super AMOLED HD Screen – Gorilla Glass 2 | 10-point
    • HSPA+ | 3G | Wi-Fi b/g/n | Bluetooth | GPS
    • Dual SIM
    • 18 MP BSI Rear Camera with Flash | 5 MP BSI Camera Front
    • 16 GB ROM | 1 GB RAM (Micro SD up to 32GB)
    • 2200 mAh Battery Capacity
    • 145*74*9.9mm
    • SMART CALL and SMART STAY
    • Miracast Wireless Display Wi-Fi Direct Ready

    Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z

This is Cherry Mobile’s current best offering. Not only that the phone packs a 1.5 GHz Quad-Core processor but the smartphone also has a 5” Full HD-IPS display. Yes folks, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z is the first local branded phone to pack a Full-HD display. And yes, it was impressive. Too bad there’s no LTE and the phone is stuck at 1 GB RAM. I’m only worried of its performance because I noticed that there lags. But don’t worry folks because the firmware is still at works and the retail version of the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z is different from the one that we’ve used in the event. I’m also worried in its battery, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z only packs a 2000mAh battery. That’s a little bit of underwhelming for a 5” Full HD Display. But let’s see. Let’s not look on the numbers but let’s wait for the review of the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z. The SRP of the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z is P11,999. Take a look at the specifications and the hands-on below.

    • Android Jelly Bean 4.2
    • 1.5 GHz MediaTek 6589T Quad-Core Processor
    • 5″ Full HD-IPS Screen – Gorilla Glass 2 | 5-point
    • HSPA+ | 3G | Wi-Fi b/g/n | Bluetooth | GPS
    • Dual SIM
    • 18 MP BSI Rear Camera with Flash | 8 MP BSI Front Camera
    • 8 GB ROM | 1 GB RAM
    • 2000 mAh Battery Capacity
    • 142.7*71.9*7.8mm
    • Miracast Wireless Display Wi-Fi Direct Ready

I’m also happy to announce that Cherry Mobile partnered with MediaTek. FYI, all of these Cosmos phones used the MediaTek MT6589 processors. The MT6589 processor is the world’s first commercialized quad-core SoC, and the world’s first HSPA+ smartphone platform supporting Dual-SIM, Dual-Active functionality. Personally, I like smartphones powered by MT6589 processor. Not only that they’re affordable but they’re also powerful.

The only phone that is available right now is the Cherry Mobile Cosmos X (which can be bought at Cherry Angel) but don’t worry because the other Cherry Mobile Cosmos phones will arrive in August-September. These Cherry Mobile Cosmos phones are really exciting. Cherry Mobile raised the standards in the local Android industry again.

Cignal TV-to-go streams TV Channels to your tablet or phone

    0

Cignal, a member of the PLDT Group has been aggressively invading our homes to offer us HD TV shows for more than 4 years. They’ve been bringing HD Channels to every Filipino households. Cignal really wants to change the TV viewing experience of every Filipinos with the announcement of Cignal TV-To-Go. It’s a service that allows you to watch real-time broadcast feeds of Cignal channels to your smartphones or tablets as long as you’re connected to the internet. But of course, there’s a catch. Why don’t you check it out after the break.

Cignal TV-To-Go is currently on its Beta phase but it is now offered to all Cignal Postpaid Subscribers who has Android devices. Yep, the Android app is now available for free. Don’t worry iOS users because the Cignal TV-To-Go app for your iPads and iOS devices will be coming in the App store very soon. Like what I’ve said before the break, there’s a catch to use the Cignal TV-To-Go. First, you need to be a Cignal subscriber and you need to register for an account. Second, you must be connected to the internet using Smart or PLDT broadband.

I tried Cignal TV-To-Go at the launch event and there were only 13 channels that are currently available. This technology is not new, the HBO Go works almost the same with this one. When I tested the Cignal-to-go app, I noticed that there are still some bugs on the app but it was understandable because the game is still at beta. There will be added channels and pay-per-views in Cignal-TV-To-Go soon too.

It’s not really an innovation since there are already some countries that are using this one. We might see the Cignal TV-To-Go as a value added service soon too.

MyPhone Iceberg: The Aluminum Quad-Core flagship of MyPhone

    MyPhone Iceberg 1
    MyPhone Iceberg 1

Local branded are really exciting! MyPhone has revealed to us of what seems to be their next flagship smartphone. Special thanks to Chuckie Dreyfus for sharing this on his blog (Be sure to check out his blog!). The next flagship of MyPhone would pack an amazing construction and specs. And yes, it doesn’t just pack the amazing specs that you want from a smartphone but the MyPhone Iceberg also has the software features that you can find on other Android phones. I suggest that you click read more and check out what MyPhone Iceberg has to offer us.

Before we got down to this, I just want to tell you first that the MyPhone Iceberg came from the Blue Life View. But the MicroSD card slot is missing on the MyPhone Iceberg compared to the Blue Life View. For me, that’s not really a deal breaker because there’s a 16 GB internal storage on this phone.

    MyPhone Iceberg Specifications

The MyPhone Iceberg is clad in Aluminum. Yes, it will give you the premium feel and look on the phone. And don’t worry about the back cover of the phone because the Philippine map on the back is now gone. And on the front, you don’t have to worry that much about scratches because it is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 2. Not bad right?

Aside from having a great hardware, the MyPhone Iceberg also pack some features that can “wow” us Pinoys. First, the phone has TARA “Theft Apprehension & Asset Recovery Application”. Basically, it lets you secure your data in case of theft. And yes, that’s exclusive for the MyPhone users. The MyPhone Iceberg also supports clever motion, that’s the feature that allows you to use gestures to do a specific command. Here’s my favorite feature of the MyPhone Iceberg, the Wireless display. I think I don’t need an explanation for that. I’m just not sure which devices would support that feature.

If you’re planning to get this smartphone then better mark your calendars and free up your schedule on July 26, 2013 from 4 PM – 12 AM for the MyPhone Iceberg Meltdown promo that’ll happen at Eastwood City Walk. Yes, they’ll be selling the MyPhone Iceberg on the event itself. They’ll be also offering the MyPhone Iceberg to credit card holders for 0% interest. Oh and before I forgot, the SRP of the phone is P11,998. Awesome right?

Globe Responds to Mr. Sepe’s Bill concern

    0

Have you seen the latest news at ABS-CBN about the Globe Bill Issue? One of their writers had an issue with Globe in his postpaid plan billing. If you can still remember, Globe had modernized their network before and it seems that the transition to that isn’t 100% yet. I also saw some tweets complaining to Globe that their postpaid billing isn’t accurate or too too much than expected. Okay, that’s Mr. Sepe’s side. Now let’s check out Globe’s response to that issue in their official statement

Here’s the official Statement of Globe regarding Mr. Sepe’s issue with the Globe Billing.

    OFFICIAL STATEMENT

Globe proactively reviewing customer billing; responds to bill concern

We write in response to the opinion article of Mr. Fernando Sepe uploaded in ABS-CBNnews.com last July 19 about his billing issues.
We understand the frustration that Mr. Sepe felt about his billing concerns since unfortunately, he was among those selected subscribers who encountered a problem in their billing. We know that the journey in modernizing our service delivery infrastructure and business support system to provide our customers with a better service experience is not easy.

As Mr. Sepe himself narrated, Globe has been proactively communicating to customers about billing challenges largely brought about by our recent systems migration, and has taken appropriate measures to address bill disputes. In his case, he indicated in the article the series of reversals done particularly for his data charges.

At this point, It is important for us to state that while Mr. Sepe felt the need to publicize his experience, Globe has been going through all billings in the last four months so that this experience will not be replicated in other subscribers. Thus, we were able to make the appropriate billing adjustments as recounted in the article, whereby bill reversals were credited to his account in the past two billings.

Another proactive service measure is the creation of a special action team two weeks ago to double check and continue reviewing all the billing statements, on a per customer basis. We want to assure our customers that we are taking this step to ensure the quality and accuracy of their billing.

As a result of the QA process, any additional bill adjustment due to our customers will be reflected in their September to October billing statements.

We welcome subscribers who may want to seek clarification about their billing statements and will be given priority in all our customer contact points. Our @talk2globe twitter account for social media has been strengthened with more
customer service advisors. Likewise, we have improved the menu for our 211 hotline to handle billing concerns. One can also go to our Globe stores for proper customer assistance.

In addition, we are extending further assistance to our customers in the form of installment offers for those who experienced delayed billings. Please contact the said customer channels for information on how to avail of the offer.

We value our customers and the feedback they give helps us serve them better. We wish to express that we are thankful for the patience and understanding our subscribers have shown in this journey of providing a much improved service. It’s getting better everyday. We have no other wish but to have the happiest customers.

I’m pretty sure that Globe is doing everything to fix their network. For those people who are experiencing problems with their bills, just contact Globe. They’ll fix that for sure, all you need is to be patient.

HTC One Mini: HTC One’s smaller brother

    0
    HTC One Mini
    HTC One Mini

The HTC One just got a smaller brother. If Sammy has their own mini version of their flagship, HTC got one for their One too. The HTC One Mini was just announced and it sports a better specifications than the Sammy’s mini version of their flagship and yes, the HTC One Mini and the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini has 4.3″ screen. I think the word “mini” is much bigger now. The HTC One mini doesn’t pack the same specifications of its bigger brother but the HTC One mini retains the aluminum body, HTC Boomsound and the Ultrapixel camera. For the software, there’s the HTC Blinkfeed and the HTC Zoe. My take on the HTC One Mini? I think HTC has successfully created their “mini-me” version of the HTC One. Some people still argue for its downgraded specifications. I think creating a mini version of a flagship shouldn’t have the same specifications with its bigger brother. Why? because it will have a much expensive production and the consumers might be confused which is the real flagship phone phone. Click read more and head on over to the specifications of the HTC One mini

HTC One Mini Price in the Philippines
The SRP of the HTC One Mini wasn’t announced but my guess is that the phone would be priced at around PHP18,000-PHP21,000. But don’t worry, Widget City might bring this phone here in the Philippines anytime soon.

    Lenovo A706: Quad-Core Android for P7,990

    0
    Lenovo A706
    Lenovo A706

Lenovo is very popular in the PC market but did you know that they’re also busy with their Android products? yep, Lenovo has also invaded the Android market a long time ago. They got a Quad-Core Exynos device before, and now they got a Quad-Core device with an affordable price that can match up against the local brands. Lenovo is also proud that the Lenovo A706 comes with Route 66 Navigation. I’m not really sure if that’ll be the main selling point of the phone but I think one of the best selling point of this Android phone is the brand name. Lenovo has been known for a long time in the PC market and did you know that they are the #1 PC maker right now? Anyway, the Lenovo A706 is using a Quad-Core Qualcomm processor but it’s not the most powerful Snapdragon S4 processor but hey, at least it’s an affordable Quad-Core processor right? Check out the specifications after the break.

    Torque July 2013 Pricelist

    0

Almost all local brands these days are going to Android. Torque isn’t new to our ears, it has been around for a few years here in the Philippines. I haven’t seen them get a lot of traction in the Android scene but with their current lineup, I think they really want to get a piece of the pie. One of the interesting smartphone in their Droidz family that they have right now is the Droidz Quad. It packs a Quad-Core processor, running on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and it is priced at P5,999. Sure, there are other brands that has the same specs with the Torque Droidz Quad but it is really nice to see that there are a lot of competition going on in the market. And yes, Android phones are really getting cheaper and better. Why don’t you check out their full line-up and pricelist after the break.

Arc Mobile Tab 720m 3G Review

    0

Tablets are almost within reach of every Filipinos. They’re getting cheaper each day. And as they’re getting cheaper, the features of these tablets are getting more interesting. For P6,000 and below, you can now get a dual-core tablet that can run most apps and has phone functions. Interesting right? Actually there are only a few tablets that have a phone function but still sport an affordable price like the Arc Mobile Tab 720 3G. Arc Mobile might be new in the industry but they surely have interesting and competitive products. Why don’t you check out my review of the Arc Mobile Tab 720 3G after the break.

    Hardware

I expected that the device will be made up of plastic but I didn’t expect that the tablet would have a solid body. I’m not allowed to blend it on blender or drop test it but I really feel that the body is very sturdy and nice to hold. Compared to other Android tablets, the Arc Mobile Tab 720 3G is really nice to hold because of its tall design. Sometimes, I’m holding the tablet in just one hand and didn’t experience that much strain in my arms or hands. The design of the tablet is neat too. The construction feels really good in my hands.

The display is one of the major setbacks in this tablet. The tablet is just rocking a WVGA resolution. Yep that’s 800×480 for you folks. That’s why browsing on the tablet is really a pain. I really need to zoom in to pages just to read the texts. You’ll also notice the elements and graphics on the tablet are much bigger than expected. The tablet is also taller than I expected which made some of the games look liked stretch. But the smaller the resolution, the lesser renders are needed which leads to less resources needed from the hardware. And yes, the 1 GHz Dual-Core MediaTek processor didn’t fail to impress me. The tablet was blazing fast and you can see the very smooth and fluid transitions in it.

From its name, obviously the tablet packs a 3G inside but the feature that you wouldn’t expect on the tablet is the dual-sim card slot. Yes, you could use the tablet for text messages and even phone calls. It’s kinda weird using the tablet for phone calls because this is a tablet for Pete’s sake. But hey, at least the tablet could do those phone functions and I didn’t experience any problems with it. Oh and compared to other tablets, this one has Bluetooth inside. I suggest that you put your backup or second sim on this instead of your main sim card. Oh and I must warn you that the back cover for the sim card and the Micro SD card slot is too hard too remove.

The Arc Mobile Tab 720m 3G packs a 4 GB of Internal storage but you can only use the half of that. That’s not unusual on Android phones and tablets. I really suggest getting a MicroSD card slot for this tablet. If you’re not informed about the Arc Mobile Tab 720m 3G, it runs on a 1 GHz Dual Core MediaTek processor paired with a 512 MB of RAM. I was disappointed by its RAM capacity nonetheless, a lot of demanding games work well on the tablet.

The battery life of the tablet doesn’t really shine, It only manage to run less then half a day before it ran out of battery on my normal use. Oh and there are two speaker grills for your music needs and it was good. The audio quality was clear and a bit loud.

    Software

The Arc Mobile Tab 720m 3G runs on Android 4.1 Jellybean. And yes, it is blazing fast. Almost everything that I run on the tablet didn’t experience any lags. Yeah, thanks to that small resolution and the fast MediaTek processor. Like what I’ve said before, the tablet only has a 512 MB of RAM. You’ll be begging for more RAM when you open a lot of apps or whenever you’re running a RAM munching apps or games. There are only a few preinstalled apps on the Arc Mobile Tab 720m 3G like the Wireless input device but I wasn’t able to run it on my device.

But if you’re only planning to run Minion Rush then you won’t have any problems with that. If you’ll be running Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Don’t worry because it will be smooth and fast at high settings. Actually, most of the demanding games are playable on this tablet. The only problem with that one is the storage but like what I’ve said earlier, a microSD card can fix that. C’mon, a class 10 16 GB MicroSD card is around P1,000 only.

The Antutu score that I got on the tablet is 6694. It fares well for a 1 GHz Dual Core MediaTek processor on a tablet. Like what I’ve said earlier (again!), the tablet can run almost all the apps and games that you need on a tablet. Actually, when we’re talking about local mid-range phones and tablets, I always prefer the MediaTek processors over Qualcomm processors because MediaTek processors are way faster than the affordable Qualcomm S4 processors.

    Camera

Cameras on tablets aren’t really that good. Actually, I barely remember when I used a tablet for taking a photo. A tablet doesn’t really take good shots. Anyway, the Arc Mobile Tab 720m 3G has a 2 Megapixel Rear camera and it isn’t really impressive but it is acceptable for a tablet. And yes, there’s Instagram in the tablet. I notice that the photos were darker but it still manage to have the colors….a little bit. . Anyway here are some of the photos that I took using the tablet.

The Arc Mobile Tab 720m 3G can also record videos in HD but I wasn’t impressed by its performance. The frame rates of the video are low too, when you’re taking a video of fast moving objects or you’re moving the tablet too fast, then you might have a problem with its video. Check out the video sample below:

    Conclusion

There are only a few tablets with phone functionalities especially a tablet with a dual sim feature. Another thing that you’ll like in here is that the tablet packs a 3G inside. Yep, you could use 3G on the tablet if there’s no Wi-Fi around. The performance didn’t fail to impress me too, it was and smooth but the deal breaker here is the resolution of the tablet. It isn’t that great for web browsing and some apps. If you are the type of person who doesn’t care about the display and you just want to have the tablet with phone functions then you might want to check this out. The Arc Mobile Tab 720m 3G SRP is P5,599 and it is available now at your nearest Arc Mobile Stores.

Thank you Arc Mobile for giving us a unit! Watch out for our Raffle!

    Nokia Lumia 1020
    Nokia Lumia 1020

No Shit. The Nokia Lumia 1020 packs a 41 megapixel camera on its back. Actually, it’s not really surprising to see this on a smartphone because the Nokia 808 Pureview already packs the 1st generation of the Pureview. But this time, the Nokia Lumia 1020 packs a 41 Megapixel sensor of the Nokia 808 Pureview but the Lumia 1020 also has OIS and the low-light capabilities of the Nokia Lumia 920. And no, the Nokia Lumia 920 also has an interesting feature that would make photogs love this phone. Check it out after the break.

As you can see the picture, the Nokia Lumia 1020 really focus on its camera prowess.I kinda feel like the Nokia Lumia 1020 is a bit ugly on its back and the design language of the Nokia Lumia phones are getting older and it hasn’t changed that much. Anyway, the Nokia Lumia 1020 comes with Nokia Pro Cam. What’s so exciting about that?
