Apple has just introduce in the iPhone Handoff feature in iOS 27 that allows users to switch between two iPhones while sharing the exact same phone number across both devices.

How iPhone Handoff Works: Main and Companion eSIM Architecture

The feature is configured directly within the Settings app under the Cellular menu on devices running iOS 27.

During initial pairing, users designate one iPhone as their Main device that they use most frequently, and a second iPhone as their Companion device. Apple’s architecture of it keeps the user’s primary cellular subscription as the Main eSIM, while generating a synchronized Companion eSIM for the secondary iPhone.

This setup enables toggling between devices back and forth, routing incoming cellular voice calls, SMS, and data connectivity to whichever phone is currently active.

Centralized Cellular Controls and Dynamic Location Sharing

All core cellular plans, roaming settings, and carrier options remain centralized and managed exclusively from the Main iPhone. Meanwhile, Apple has also made the dynamic location sharing so that Find My and family sharing automatically broadcast location data based on whichever iPhone is actively handling the phone number at that moment.

This allows users to leave their larger or more expensive flagship phone safely at home while taking a lighter secondary phone out for fitness or travel without missing calls.

Carrier Support and Potential iPhone Dual-Device Lifestyles

Beyond requiring two devices updated to iOS 27, iPhone Handoff relies on specific carrier network integration. Early indications suggest major telecoms like T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany will be among the first network operators to support the companion eSIM standard at launch.

Industry watchers also note that the feature paves the way for hybrid hardware setups, enabling users to effortlessly juggle upcoming form factors like the rumored ultra-thin iPhone Air or foldable iPhone alongside a rugged Pro Max model.

Apple is widely expected to roll out the public release of iOS 27 later in September 2026 alongside its next-generation iPhone hardware lineup.
