OpenAI has introduced OpenAI Dots, a brand new category of always-on autonomous AI agents capable of managing complex projects and everyday workflows across digital platforms.
Unveiled during DevDay 2026 in San Francisco, the agents break away from traditional turn-based chatbots by proactively executing multi-step tasks in the background.
OpenAI Dots Powered by GPT-6 Astra on Dedicated Cloud Computers
At the core of each agent is OpenAI’s latest GPT-6 Astra model. Rather than waiting for continuous prompt commands, each Dot runs persistently inside its own dedicated cloud computing environment.
This dedicated virtual setup allows agents to continuously browse the web, aggregate research, and organize files even after you close the app or log off your computer.
Users can also personalize their experience by designing a custom three-dimensional avatar for each agent, giving their autonomous digital assistants a recognizable presence.
Integration Across 4,000 Apps and Multiplatform Messaging
To deliver real-world utility, Dots can plug into more than 4,000 applications and services. They can check calendars, communicate through Slack, trigger food deliveries, and collaborate on software deployment.
Interacting with your agents is versatile across ecosystems. You can converse directly within the ChatGPT desktop, web, and mobile apps, or message them inside Slack and Microsoft Teams.
Subscribers can also sign up for a waitlist to exchange text messages with their agents directly via iMessage on iOS or through RCS on Android.
Human-in-the-Loop Safety Controls and Custom Boundary Rules
Recognizing the risks of autonomous software, OpenAI built comprehensive safety guardrails directly into the platform. Sensitive actions such as software installation, account updates, or financial transactions require explicit user confirmation.
Through a built-in Custom Rules dashboard, users can define strict boundaries for what their agents may execute autonomously versus where they must pause for approval.
You can inspect live progress logs at any time or pause an agent instantly if a workflow veers off course.
Pricing, Subscription Tier Availability, and Future Rollout
Initial access begins immediately for subscribers of the ChatGPT Pro tier priced at $100 per month, as well as Business Premium accounts. Enterprise, education, and healthcare organizations can access agents through an administrator-enabled beta program.
Subscribers start with control over a single Dot, with OpenAI planning to enable multi-agent coordination in future software updates.
