PlayStation Is Ending Physical Game Discs in 2028

PlayStation physical game discs are officially coming to an end. Sony has announced that it will stop producing physical discs for all new games released on PlayStation consoles beginning in January 2028. That means, we probably won’t get to see Grand Theft Auto VI running on a physical disc in the future as well.

After the deadline, new PlayStation games will only be available digitally through the PlayStation Store or from retailers in the form of digital purchases. Games released physically before January 2028 will not be affected.

Sony explained that the decision was made as more players continue to move away from physical media and prefer buying their games digitally. While this move is not surprising, it is still a sad development for the gaming industry.

Why PlayStation physical game discs matter for collecting

Physical games have always been more than just a way to install and play a title. For many gamers, collecting game cases and discs is part of the entire experience.

You can display them on a shelf, lend them to a friend, trade them in or sell them once you are finished playing. Some physical games also become valuable collectibles several years after their release. Digital games cannot fully replace that experience. You may have hundreds of titles inside your account, but they are still nothing more than icons on a screen.

Once PlayStation physical game discs disappear, future gamers may no longer know what it feels like to build a proper collection of their favourite games.

Game preservation will become more difficult

The bigger concern is game preservation. Old discs and cartridges have allowed players, collectors and preservation groups to keep games accessible long after their original consoles were discontinued. With digital-only games, access depends heavily on online stores, servers and user accounts. Games can be removed from digital storefronts because of expired licences, while older services may eventually be shut down.

January 2028 will mark the end of an era for PlayStation. It could also be the beginning of a future where physical game collecting slowly disappears and video game preservation becomes much more difficult.
