Realme 5 Review: The best budget smartphone with quad-camera

1

Realme 5 is the latest budget smartphone to come out from the brand and by just looking at its specs, you already know that the smartphone is one of the best in the market already. The price? It’s damn affordable and today, we’re gonna talk about the latest quad-camera packing smartphone from Realme, the Realme 5 smartphone.

Realme 5 Review: Design and construction

One thing is for sure, the Realme 5 is a massive phone. No, it’s not bad because we’re getting a lot of features from its massive build including a large battery and a larger screen estate which is better for gaming. The body of the smartphone is plastic but it does look like glass when you’re looking at it.

The Realme 5 features a geometric pattern at the back that adds to the eye candy to the looks of the smartphone and it’s a lot better than a plain-looking one. The smartphone also has a thick build at 9.3mm and surprisingly, the smartphone is still comfortable to hold and the curves at the back of the smartphone were really good.

The Realme 5 is a massive and tall smartphone thanks to the 20:9 display aspect ratio of the smartphone. Yes, it’s tall but also means that the smartphone is narrower which means that the smartphone is more ergonomic. The button placements are just fine however, I would prefer that the buttons be placed in the middle of the sides of the smartphone.

At the back of the smartphone is where you can find the fingerprint scanner and it does offer a minimalistic look at the back compared to other smartphone and yes, this one is pretty fast and in case you want another way to unlock your smartphone, the Realme 5 supports face unlock too.

The smartphone is unfortunately still stuck with micro USB. Well, it’s not really a bad thing however, we’re slowly transitioning in where our devices are mostly USB-C already and unfortunately again, there’s no VOOC flash charge on this smartphone so you have to rely on the 10w charger of the smartphone which will take some time before you can fully charge your device.

Realme 5 Review: Display

One of the big features of the smartphone is its display. What I mean by big is that the smartphone’s display is really big since we’re getting a 6.5-inch display in here with a 20:9 display aspect ratio. The smartphone also comes with 1600×720 resolution so don’t expect that the display would be as sharp compared to other smartphones with Full HD+ resolution.

We’re getting a lower resolution in here and the colors of the display aren’t perfect but it will do just fine. The sunlight legibility of the smartphone was good too as I can use the smartphone outside at direct sunlight. The smartphone also packs good viewing angles.

Realme 5 Review: Battery Life

There’s a reason why the Realme 5 got a thick body. Well, the smartphone does come with a pretty large 5000mAh battery inside and yes, the smartphone didn’t disappoint in our test as we were able to get a long battery life on the smartphone. In our PC Mark test of Realme 5, we were able to get a battery life of 17 hours and 10 minutes which is one of the longest-lasting smartphones that we’ve reviewed. So if you want to have a long battery life smartphone, the Realme 5 is the one for you. Unfortunately, it takes sometime before you can fully charge the smartphone.

Realme 5 Review: Software

The Realme 5 is still running on ColorOS 6 based on Android 9 Pie. Of course, there are some software and apps that come preinstalled on the smartphone. Navigating on the smartphone was smooth, swift and without problems. Everything on the UI of the smartphone is user-friendly and unlike other ColorOS 6-running smartphones, the Realme 5 features an app drawer by just sliding up the smartphone from the home screen.

As expected, the Realme 5 will come with Google apps, Game Center, Game Space, ORoaming, Clone Phone, and many more. Some of them are useful but some of them are not. Nonetheless, the UI of the smartphone is fast, smooth and very easy to use.

Realme 5 Review: Performance

The smartphone is one of the most powerful in its price range as we got here a Snapdrapdragon 665 processor along with the Adreno 610 GPU which is more than enough to run most games and applications without problems. The smartphone also starts at 3GB RAM but the one that we got comes with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.

We tested the smartphone in different benchmarking applications and we got really decent scores on the smartphone especially for its price. Check out the scores that we got below:

  • Antutu – 169515
  • 3DMark Open GL – 1150
  • 3DMark Vulkan – 1061
  • GeekBench Single-Core – 311
  • GeekBench Multi-Core – 1380

For most normal usage, the Realme 5 won’t have a problem with that as the Snapdragon 665 processor is already too powerful for that and if you wanted to run many apps, I didn’t experience lags and slowdowns when using the smartphone and if you’re using the smartphone to play games, you’ll be happy to know that the Realme 5 is actually capable of running some games at heavy graphics, however, I still prefer using the smartphone and setting it at mid settings. Nonetheless, Snapdragon 665 is doing just fine.

  • Call Of Duty Mobile – high graphics – max frame rate – other features are off
  • NBA 2k20 – Ultra high
  • Mobile Legends – highest settings possible

Realme 5 Review: Camera

There’s a quad-camera setup on the smartphone just like its pro brother however, this one is different from the Realme 5 Pro as we got a 12MP main camera + 8MP ultrawide camera + 2MP macro camera + 2MP depth sensor and then there’s the 13MP selfie sensor on the notch of the smartphone.

Surprisingly, the quad-camera of the smartphone performed better than I expected. Again, it’s not on-par with the Realme 5 Pro but Realme 5 can really capture details and some of them have pretty good colors with sharp details. The macro camera of the smartphone performed better than I expected too but I barely use that camera of the smartphone and then there’s the night mode that produces vivid shots with brighter images which reach beyond my expectations. The night shots that we got on the Realme 5 are just amazing especially when we consider the price of the Realme 5.

Realme 5 Review: Verdict

The Realme 5 offers really good hardware and features for its price. Actually, the Realme 5 might be one of the best budget smartphones around. We got here a long battery life, a decent Snapdragon 665 processor, a quad-camera, and a very large display. All the features that you need on a smartphone

However, the smartphone didn’t have a VOOC Flash Charge which will take you some time to fully charge the smartphone and the display of the smartphone is just at HD+. Despite these flaws, the Realme 5 is still a great contender in the budget segment.

The Realme 5 is now available and the smartphone comes in these variants:

  • 3GB+64GB – Php6,990
  • 3GB+32GB – Php7,990
  • 4GB+128GB – Php9,990

OPPO A9 2020 Review

1

The OPPO A9 2020 is now on the sweet spot of the mid-range segment but don’t get fooled with the A-series because despite belonging in the A-series line of OPPO, this one does have interesting hardware and features inside. There’s a quadruple rear camera and also a large 5000mAh battery. The smartphone does feature a lot of interesting features. Interested? Check out our review of the smartphone below.

OPPO A9 2020 Review: Design and hardware

The OPPO A9 2020 is a massive phone and no, not in a bad way. The smartphone is tall thanks to its 20:9 display aspect ratio and the tiny bezels on the sides. The smartphone also features a curved back which makes the smartphone easier to hold despite being a large phone.

The back features a glass back design and the one that we got comes in Space Purple and the design of the smartphone reminds me fo the OPPO R17 Pro but with a glossier look and with an additional S-like reflection at the back when the light passes thru it.

Thankfully, the power button and the volume rocker of the smartphone are very reachable since OPPO has placed these buttons in the middle of the smartphone so yeah, nothing to worry about the buttons of the smartphone.

At the back is where you can find the fingerprint scanner of the OPPO A9 2020 and it’s fast and very accessible but if you want, you can use the face unlock of the smartphone which is just fast and fine to use. And of course, the OPPO A9 2020 comes with a USB-C port, however, with no support for VOOC Flash Charge and then we have here a 3.5mm audio port just beside the USB-C port.

The smartphone does come with Dolby Atmos and it does help in producing better sound on the smartphone. It wasn’t good as most flagship smartphones but this will do just fine for a mid-range.

OPPO A9 2020 Review: Display

The display of the smartphone is massive. We got here a 6.5-inch with an HD+ IPS panel with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. As expected, the display of the smartphone isn’t as sharp as you might expect since we’re getting a 720p resolution over here but the colors seem fair and the display is bright enough to be used outside. The viewing angles of the smartphone’s display is fine too.

OPPO A9 2020 Review: Battery

One of the unique and its main selling point is the battery of the smartphone. We got here a large 5,000mAh battery and in my usage, the smartphone will definitely last up to a day or more of usage despite playing some games on the smartphone. In our PC Mark battery test, we got a score of 15 hours and 17 minutes which is deeply amazing for the smartphone. This makes the smartphone fit for playing games too on the go.

OPPO A9 2020 Review: Software

The OPPO A9 2020 rocks ColorOS 6 based on Android 9 Pie and we still don’t have a word regarding which devices will arrive with ColorOS 7. Just like the other OPPO smartphones, the OPPO A9 2020’s software is user-friendly and everything and anything is really accessible in the applications. The smartphone does come with some applications like Game Space which will optimize your gaming, phone manager, game center, app market, theme store and more.

OPPO A9 2020 Review: Performance

There’s a Snapdragon 665 processor along with 8GB RAM inside the OPPO A9 2020 and as expected, the OPPO A9 2020’s chipset will do just fine with most of the things that you need on a smartphone including gaming. Whether you want to use the smartphone for casual usage or some pretty heavy gaming, the OPPO A9 2020 can handle that. But before we talk about gaming, let’s discuss the benchmark scores that we got on the OPPO A9 2020:

Overall, it was pretty good for a midrange smartphone. The OPPO A9 2020’s Snapdragon 665 processor just performed well. In gaming, we were able to play Call of Duty Mobile at the highest settings possible. I was also able to run PUBG Mobile and NBA 2k20.

In NBA 2k20, we can get better framerates if you set it up at lower settings which will give you a better experience on the smartphone. In Call of Duty, it will be more enjoyable if you can set it up to medium settings with max framerate to get a smooth 60fps gameplay on the smartphone. In PUBG Mobile, the game can only have a high framerate at smooth settings which means the game is not yet optimized for the smartphone.

Overall, the OPPO A9 2020 will do just fine in gaming. In some games, it might not be able to max out the settings but I’m pretty sure that the OPPO A9 2020 can handle most games that are available in the market right now.

OPPO A9 2020 Review: Camera

One of the main selling points of the OPPO A9 2020 is its camera. We got here a quad-camera setup with a 48MP main camera with an additional 8MP ultra wide-angle lens + 2MP macro lens and 2MP depth sensor.

Well, the camera of the smartphone performs well depending on the conditions. Most of the shots that I took at decent lighting conditions were really well. They’re sharp, vivid, and it can really capture the details that I needed with a decent dynamic range however in some rare cases, the photos tend to blow out. Nonetheless, the night mode of this one works well with less noise and offers more brightness and colors. Check out the shots that we took using the smartphone:

The selfie will do just fine on the smartphone however at lowlight, you can clearly see that it needs some improvement but it was brighter than I expected. The OPPO A9 2020 can also capture videos at up to 4K which is pretty impressive. The macro lens works on this smartphone too and it can capture really small objects at a really short distance from the smartphone, however, I barely use that feature on the smartphone but it’s a nice touch that we have a macro lens on the OPPO A9 2020.

OPPO A9 2020 Review: Verdict

The OPPO A9 2020 performs well for a mid-range smartphone. First, we got here a 5,000mAh battery that can last pretty long even with heavy usage, a large display that is advantageous for watching movies, videos, and even playing games, a quad-camera setup, and an attractive design.

If you’re the type of person who is into large batteries and also large displays and you want that fancy quad-camera setup then you might want to take a look at this but the competition at its price segment is really tough as we also got here the Vivo S1 and also a few more bucks will give you more smartphone selections.

The OPPO A9 2020 is now available for Php15,990.

Samsung Galaxy S11 might use a 108MP rear camera

0

108MP Camera?

The Samsung Galaxy S10 series are excellent smartphones and they really have a lot of new and innovative features including its Infinity-O display and also its quadruple lens rear camera and now, the Samsung Galaxy S11 is expected to be outed in a few months time but popular leaker, @UniverseIce, has already shared some details regarding the S11.

The Samsung Galaxy S11 might use the latest 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX Sensor that Samsung made that is co-developed with Xiaomi or we could probably see a new sensor for the Samsung Galaxy S11.

Right now, we still don’t have any ideas about the smartphone but we can expect the Samsung Galaxy S11 this Q1 2020 if the timeline will still be the same.
