OPPO F9 Review

1

A few months after the launch of the OPPO F7, the company has now released the OPPO F9 which features upgrades from the predecessor and of course, this smartphone still has a focus on selfies and also its VOOC fast charging which can give 2 hours of talk time with 5-minute charging. Want to know more about it? Check out our review of the OPPO F9 below.

Design and construction

If you’re an OPPO user, you would immediately feel that the OPPO F9 is unmistakably an OPPO smartphone because of its same feel of the OPPO F7 when you hold it. But don’t worry, it isn’t a bad thing as the smartphone does feel light and it fits fine in my hand.

We can still see the rounded sides of the OPPO F9 along with the plastic back that looks like glass from a distance. Well, it isn’t the best material that can be used for a mid-range smartphone but it does feel fine when I’m using it.

The one that we got for review is the sunrise red color and it does look really catchy to the eye. There’s a diamond-patterned back too which can be seen depending on the angle that you’re holding the smartphone but in case you’ll be getting the other colors, there’s a different pattern for the other colors.

The OPPO F9 still comes with a Micro USB port which is a little bit disappointing as most smartphones these days even at mid-range are now utilizing USB Type-C. But again, the smartphone does support VOOC Flash Charge which lets you charge the smartphone really fast.

The speaker of the smartphone is just what I expected it to be, it’s just fine and the quality of the speaker is just average and thankfully, we still have a headphone jack on this smartphone. I hope OPPO will never remove that in their F series smartphones. There’s a triple card tray too in case the 64GB storage isn’t enough for you and you want to use two sim card slots.

Display

If a smartphone would have a notch, I think OPPO has the best-notched display on a mid-range smartphone that is available in the market. They call it the waterdrop display which only covers a tiny part on the top of the display and yet, it manages to have a camera and also an earpiece at the top of the smartphone.

There’s a 6.3-inch Full HD+ display on the OPPO F9 and it has a 90.8% screen-to-body ratio with 19.5:9 aspect ratio. That’s really great especially for a mid-range smartphone. In my usage, I never really had problems with the notch of the smartphone as it only blocks a really tiny part of it compared to other notches on smartphones.

When it comes to display, the OPPO F9 does a great job and if I’ve been using this smartphone even at direct sunlight and the colors were really fine on this smartphone. The viewing angles are pretty good too and I really don’t have any problems with it.

Battery Life

Aside from the VOOC flash charge of the smartphone, there are a pretty large 3500mAH battery inside. However, if you want to utilize the VOOC flash charge of the smartphone then you better use the included cable and charger of the smartphone since other fast charging tech doesn’t work on the OPPO F9. And the VOOC Flash charge? it really works as the smartphone can charge really fast.

In PC Mark, we got a score of 8 hours and 13 minutes which is pretty good for its hardware and battery. In my usage, the smartphone would last up to a day most of the time however if you’re a heavy gamer then you better bring a power bank with you most of the time.

Software and performance

The OPPO F9 uses ColorOS 5.2 based on Android 8.1. The software is smooth and it is better than ever. The small changes including smoother and better transitions add to the eye candy of the smartphone. In case you’re worried about the security of the smartphone, the OPPO F9 still comes with a fingerprint scanner at the back which is pretty fast and also face unlock that works well and fast.

The smartphone comes with Oroaming too which gives you the best rates for roaming but I have to try that one yet when I’m outside the country. There’s an application called Game Space which basically optimizes the games by allocating resources and also improving the game performance. The best part? Your games will not be interrupted when someone is calling in selected applications

When it comes to benchmarks, it has almost similar scores to the previous generation. Check out the scores that we got using the OPPO F9.

On the gaming side, the OPPO F9 can pretty much handle most games. Check out the GameBench scores that we got using the smartphone.

PUBG Mobile – HD/High Framerate/Enable AA

It’s clearly seen in this one that the smartphone was only able to run the game at 30fps as it was limited by the game only to high framerate settings. Nonetheless, the FPS stability of the smartphone is at 97%. Expect framedrops at heavy scenes

Real Racing 3

In Real Racing 3, the game was able to have a media FPS of 57fps which is just fine and the FPS stability is at 96%

Asphalt 9

Playing Asphalt 9 on the OPPO F9 is noticeably unstable. The FPS stability is only at 59% and you can easily notice the frame drops but you can still play the game with its median of 22fps.

You can check out the GameBench Benchmarking app at (https://www.gamebench.net)

You can also download the app at the Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamebench.metricscollector)

Camera

Some of you might say that the hardware of the smartphone didn’t have too many changes well, the camera of the OPPO F9 has definitely improve over the previous generation. It’s a big relief that the OPPO F9 now sports a dual lens rear camera which is a first in the F series. It really helps in bringing out the depth of the photo on portrait mode.

Most of the shots that we took using the smartphone were pretty cool. Pretty good dynamic range and the colors were fine on the smartphone. Take a look at our sample shots using the smartphone:

Verdict

The OPPO F9 is definitely an upgrade from the previous generation but it’s not a big leap unlike before. The processing power inside the smartphone is still powerful despite being used in the OPPO F7. The camera on both the rear and the selfie of the smartphone has definitely improved.

It’s an upgrade from the OPPO F7 and if you want to have a selfie smartphone then the OPPO F9 is definitely a smartphone brand that you should take a look at.

The OPPO F9 is now available for Php17,990.

ASUS Zenfone 5 long-term review

0

The ASUS Zenfone 5 is definitely one of the hottest mid-range smartphones this year. It was unveiled this year and in our review, we definitely loved the smartphone as it features a premium design and a hardware that is perfectly matched for a mid-range smartphone. But after a few months? Is it still a good smartphone?

It’s a tough one

When I held the ASUS Zenfone 5, the first thing that came to my mind is that the smartphone is that the smartphone’s glass build would break easily. But no, I was dead wrong because I dropped the smartphone more than 3x and there were no cracks or big dents on the smartphone. The glass and the frame of the smartphone is really solid and tough and I love it.

The upgrades

There were a lot of updates for the ASUS Zenofne 5 after our review and it has definitely improved our experience on the smartphone but let’s focus first on the minor features on the smartphone that were added over time after our review of the smartphone.

Right now, the ASUS Zenfone 5 now features a raise to wake the phone which is a big thing for me as I don’t have to press the power button anymore and since it’s already awake when it’s raised, the smartphone would automatically use the face unlock to unlock the smartphone. Pretty helpful added feature if you ask me.

And speaking of face unlock, we previously told in our review that the ASUS Zenfone 5’s face unlock was pretty terrible and thankfully, ASUS has improved it over time, however, the smartphone still isn’t the best one or the fastest one that you can find on a mid-range smartphone.

The Zenimoji on the smartphone isn’t really new but it has definitely improved over a few updates. The ASUS Zenfone 5’s Zenimoji has added more features and you can now do Zenimojis replacing your face using the camera. Really cool.

Another added feature that a lot of you might appreciate is that the smartphone can now hide its notch. Yep, that feature wasn’t able available when the Zenfone 5 came out in the market.

Same performance

The ASUS Zenfone 5 is powered by a Snapdragon 636 processor with 4GB of RAM. The smartphone also features an AI boost which basically boosts up your smartphone and in our usage of the smartphone after a few months, the performance is still pretty much the same and yes, the SD636 processor is still capable of most apps and games however, not as powerful as other smartphones in the mid-range market right now.

The battery life is pretty much the same however, some people might have a different opinion over it as the battery really degrades on pretty much every device that we have.

Better camera

One of the biggest upgrades that ASUS has done for the Zenfone 5 is the camera. When we reviewed the smartphone, we were impressed with its camera but not the best one in its price range. There are two cameras and one of them is wide-angle lens camera. Today, the ASUS Zenfone 5’s camera has really improved whether that’s selfies or the rear cameras. However, don’t expect too much from its wide-angle lens camera at the back but still, the colors, contrast, and almost everything have improved on the smartphone. Check out the shots that we took using the smartphone.

Verdict

The ASUS Zenfone 5 is still a good smartphone after a few months. While it isn’t the best one in its price range when it comes to hardware but we were impressed with its improvements over time. One of the things that I really like about it is the build quality and the improvement in its camera and over the 6 months of use, I’m still pretty happy with it.

It may not be the best smartphone when it comes to specifications but if you’re looking at a smartphone with a solid build quality and jack of all trades of almost everything then you might want to take a look at the ASUS Zenfone 5 that is now priced Php17,995.

ASUS Zenbook S Quick Hands-On

0

One of the notebooks that were released in Computex 2018 was the ASUS Zenbook S. Although the notebook didn’t get the headline that much as the ASUS Zenbook Pro with the screenpad got eyes of most of the media, it doesn’t mean that the ASUS Zenbook S isn’t a good notebook. Check out what we think about the ASUS Zenbook S below.

A really comfortable hinge design

One of the highlights of having this notebook is the ErgoLift hinge design which gives more airflow to the notebook thanks to the tilting of the notebook and also because of tilt of the keyboard, it is easier to type on the notebook wherever I am.

The ASUS Zenbook S is incredibly thin too at 12.9mm thin and it’s also light at 1kg. You can easily hold this notebook with just one hand. It’s just that light.

When it comes to construction, the notebook is made up of unibody aluminum which feels premium and also solid. Despite that, I was really happy that the notebook is still light especially for its size.

Comfty keyboard

The ASUS Zenbook S features a comfortable keyboard. A really comfortable one actually thanks to ergonomic design and the isolated keyboard does have a fine 1.2mm key travel. It isn’t the best keyboard in the category but the actuation of this one feels great. Oh and this one features a backlit keyboard too so you can use your notebook even at the dark.

A great touchpad too

The ASUS Zenbook S features a touchpad that is responsive and clicking on it was just great. It doesn’t feature that same level of using the touchpad on the MacBook but the ASUS Zenbook S’ touchpad is responsive and comfortable too, however, I really didn’t like the placement of the fingerprint scanner of the notebook which is placed at the upper left of the touchpad.

Few ports

One of the reasons why the notebook is slim and light is because the notebook doesn’t have too many ports in it. It only features 3 USB-C Ports in which one of the ports is for the charger. This might be a dealbreaker for some but there are already a lot of dongles that are already available in the market now. Actually, ASUS is including a dock for pots for the ASUS Zenbook S. The lack of ports might be a problem to you if you use your notebook that requires a lot of ports. And, of course, the ASUS Zenbook S does come with a headphone jack on the right side.

Just a fine display

The ASUS Zenbook S features a 13.3-inch display and this one comes with a Full HD resolution. While we like the NanoEdge bezel of the notebook, it doesn’t have the same thin bezels of the ASUS Zenbook 13. Nonetheless, I’m just fine with its color reproduction and its viewing angles. However, I wished that the display of the ASUS Zenbook S was brighter.

Thin Design, Powerful hardware

One of its selling point is not just its design but also its power, the ASUS Zenbook S is powered by an 8th Generation Intel Core i5-8250U or Intel Core i7-8550U processor and also 16GB of RAM. It also comes with Intel UHD Graphics 620 which is fine for basic notebook usage however if you want some gaming, you can plug in an external GPU on the notebook thanks to the Thunderbolt 3 USB-C port. However, we weren’t able to try out its performance but on the white paper, it’s promising.

So far, we like almost everything that we’ve seen in the notebook and it’s promising. While a lot of people might be turned off with its lack of ports, but we’re really happy with most of the aspects of the laptop especially its construction and its weight. The availability of the Thunderbolt 2 also made it possible for the notebook to be a gaming notebook.

The ASUS Zenbook S starts Php69,995 for the Intel Core i5 variant and Php74,995 for the Intel Core i7 variant

OPPO Find X Review: Smartphone from the future

1

A few months ago, OPPO isn’t really that popular in the western market but recently, they’ve showcased the OPPO Find X to the world and everyone was amazed at its sexy design and also in its display. It might not be the first smartphone to have a sliding camera but it does have a better and sexier application. Check out our review below to know more about the smartphone.

Design and build

The first thing that will come into your mind once you hold the OPPO Find X is a beauty. Yes. The smartphone is not just elegant but it has the sexiest design on a smartphone right now. Why did I say that? Well, just look at the build of the smartphone. The OPPO Find X is glass all throughout and it’s really premium to hold.

There’s a curved glass on the front and the back of the smartphone which heavily implies that the smartphone is all about premium and elegance and whether you’re holding the smartphone from the back or the front, the OPPO Find X is just really comfortable to hold. Aside from the glass is the gradient highlights at the back of the smartphone in where it’s gleaming and it really shines elegantly depending on the angles that you are looking at it.

Unlike the other OPPO smartphone, the OPPO Find X only features a USB Type-C and there’s no headphone jack in sight but thankfully, OPPO has decided to include a dongle on the box for that one. The interesting part about the OPPO Find X is its sim card tray actually looks like a single sim card slot but actually, you place a nano sim card slot on one side and another one on the other side. Yup, that cool.

The speaker is placed on the side of the USB Type-C and it was loud enough whether you want to play music in your room, watch videos on YouTube, or even when you’re playing games. However, I would still go for earphones when playing games like PUBG Mobile.

Again, the OPPO Find X does have a really cool design and build. It’s very comfortable to the hands and the sliding camera is awesome however you’ll be limited with the case and the included case of the OPPO Find X will not cover the camera part of the smartphone.

Display

It’s the first time that OPPO has used a curved display on their smartphone. There’s a 6.4-inch AMOLED display on the OPPO Find X with a Full HD+ resolution and of course, a Gorilla Glass 5 protection. OPPO calls the smartphone’s display as Panoramic Arc Screen and my God, the screen-to-body ratio of 93.8% is majestic, massive, and really impressive.

The color of the display was really vivid and there were rich and deep blacks on this one. Since we’re getting a 19.5:9 display aspect, the display is perfect for split-screen and also for gaming on landscape mode. However, since there were no bezels on this smartphone, I tend to accidentally touch some buttons when playing PUBG Mobile but damn, the smartphone’s display is really immersive.

One of the coolest things about the OPPO Find X is the panoramic light color that illuminates on the sides of the display to notify that there’s someone calling you or a notification. Really cool and useful feature if you ask me.

Battery life

The OPPO Find X features a 3730mAh battery inside which is a just enough for a smartphone at its size and in our usage, we were able to use the smartphone for a whole day of use without asking for more juice however in our PC Mark test, we were only able to get a score of 7 hours and 38 minutes but again, our real-life usage of the OPPO Find X was better than that.

Software

The OPPO Find X is still powered by the same ColorOS that we can find on other OPPO smartphones. It’s ColorOS 5.1 on Android 8.1 Oreo and the interface of the smartphone is very user-friendly and pleasing to the eye thanks to its colors and the smooth transitions of the UI.

There are also some unique features that you can find on the smartphone including the ability to have a pop-up window when you’re playing a game. This is essential when you need the SMS or messenger app when you’re playing games and of course, there’s the shortcut for screen recording and screenshot by just swiping on the edge of the smartphone.

The smartphone’s storage is at 256GB and damn, I don’t think you would need any more storage than that unless you save a whole lot of media files on your smartphone. There’s a generous 8GB of RAM too which is the highest on most smartphones these days.

Performance

Since we’re getting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor along with Adreno 630 GPU and 8GB of RAM then you already know base on the specifications that the smartphone can run almost everything in it. In our benchmark, the OPPO Find X just dominated all of the benchmarks apps that we used. Check out the benchmark applications that we’ve used for the OPPO Find X.

3D Mark

GeekBench

Antutu

When it comes to gaming, everything was silky smooth whatever game that you’re running in it and thanks to OPPO Game Space, there’s a little bit of optimization that is going on the smartphone. Here are our Gamebench scores that we got from the OPPO Find X.

PUBG Mobile HDR graphics, Ultra framerates, Anti-Aliasing On

Real Racing 3

Asphalt 9

Every game that you’ll put in this smartphone will probably run well thanks to its powerful hardware inside. I really had no problems with any games since most games runs really well on the Snapdragon platform.

You can check out the GameBench Benchmarking app at (https://www.gamebench.net)

You can also download the app at the Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamebench.metricscollector)

Camera

The 3D stealth camera of the OPPO Find X is probably the most unique feature of the smartphone that you can’t just find anywhere. The camera is basically hidden in the smartphone when it is not in used and it’s a mechanism that slides out on top of the smartphone.

It’s cool and it’s unique however there are moving parts on this one which may cause breakage in the future. But in my usage, I was pretty happy with the OPPO Find X as the sliding mechanism does feel solid even after hundreds of times of use. You don’t have to worry about the smartphone accidentally sliding out in your pocket as this one has a fail-safe. In case there’s an object or force blocking the sliding mechanism of the camera then the smartphone’s camera will automatically not open.

When it comes to quality of the rear camera, I can already say that the OPPO Find X doesn’t have the best camera in a flagship smartphone but that doesn’t mean that the smartphone is bad. It actually got better after a few updates. Shooting at well-lit conditions gives me pretty good and sharp shots with really great colors. Shooting at dim conditions are still good but not great, however, the AI of the smartphone really helps in shooting using the smartphone as it reduces the noise on low-lit conditions and producing better shots most of the time. Check out the sample shots that I took using the rear camera of the smartphone.

The front-facing camera and its sensors are one of the unique features that you can find on the OPPO Find X as it features sensors that can scan and detect your face securely. Face Unlock was really good on this smartphone because it was fast and it works well even without lighting. So yeah, the lack of fingerprint scanner is a no biggie for me.

But of course, these front-facing sensors are not just used for face unlock, they’re also used for other features like Omoji and better face scanning for better AI photos. Actually, here are some of the selfies that I took using the OPPO Find X.

When it comes to video, the smartphone can record 1080p 30fps on the front facing camera and 4K 30fps on the rear camera. Again, it’s not the best one but it was pretty acceptable on a flagship smartphone like this one.

Verdict

Without a doubt, the OPPO Find X is the sexiest smartphone in the world right now. It has the right curves that not only fits the hand but also really pleasing to the eye. The gleaming gradient colors on the glass build of the smartphone is unique too and it’s emphasizing its elegance and being a premium flagship smartphone.

But of course, the smartphone’s design isn’t its only strength as this one is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with 8GB of RAM which is really top notch when it comes to performance and gaming. The storage is spacious too as we got a 256GB of internal storage inside.

However, despite having a really great hardware inside and a really sexy design, some people might not be a big fan of the lack of fingerprint scanner and of course, the sliding mechanism as it involved moving parts. Again, the camera of the smartphone isn’t a great one for a flagship smartphone but it will do pretty well.

The OPPO Find X has a futuristic look. The company has given us a glimpse of what the future of smartphone might look like and damn, the design and the features of the OPPO Find X is really game-changing. it might not be a perfect smartphone but it’s definitely powerful and beautiful.

If you’re into a sexy smartphone that can really catch the attention of most people then this one is a great smartphone for you or you just want a powerful smartphone that you can use for games then the OPPO Find X is the one for you.

The OPPO Find X is now available for Php49,990

Vivo will take the lead in the development of pre-commercial 5G smartphones

0

Vivo has already completed the initial development of the 5G smartphone software and hardware on their flagship smartphone, the Vivo NEX. The device is running on Qualcomm’s X50 modem and they’ve already concluded the initial architecture planning, 3D placement stacking, RF antenna designs and optimized battery space on the Vivo NEX to make 5G possible on the device.

The 5G version of the Vivo NEX also supports NSA or Non-standalone architecture model that includes dual connection for LTE and New Radio based on the 3GPP Release 15 standards. Vivo has started its research on 5G after the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has released their vision IMT-2020(5G) and the Chinese company has set up its 5G Research Institute in Beijing in 2016 and became its main contributors at the 3GP standard group to develop 5G technologies.

Vivo has also accelerated their efforts for their 5G innovation by activating their 5G antenna and RF related development. They’ve also partnered with China Mobile on the “China Mobile 5G Device Forerunner Initiative” and they’ve been working with Qualcomm on 5G developments including 5G mm-Wave antenna arrays into a Vivo commercial form factor.

This is an exciting development from Vivo and I hope that we get to see a 5G-enabled device from the company very soon.
