OPPO F5 Launched in the Philippines

0

OPPO Philippines has finally launched their most awaited smartphone this year — the OPPO F5. The smartphone is a big change compared to their previous smartphones as the OPPO F5 features a new design with a large 6-inch Full Screen display on the front with on-screen buttons and also placing the fingerprint scanner of the smartphone at the back.

Just like the previous OPPO smarphones, the OPPO F5 will be selfie-centric but this time the smartphone will feature A.I. Beautification which is basically better than most beautification that I’ve tried on a smartphone. My selfies and skin tones are better compared to other smartphones.

Another notable feature of the OPPO F5 is the large-6 inch display with FHD+ resolution. The display aspect ratio of the smartphone is 18:9 that’s why it’s more ergonomic and narrower but still big compared to most smartphones.

The OPPO F5 can now be pre-ordered until November 3 and it will be available on November 4, 2017 P15,990.

OPPO F5 Specs

  • 6.0-inch Full HD+ IPS Display

  • 32GB Internal Storage expandable via MicroSD
  • 16-megapixel rear camera with LED Flash

Acer Predator Helios 300 Review

0

Acer Predator has recently released a gaming a laptop that packs a punch in terms of power but still sports a cheaper price compared to the competition and it’s the Acer Predator Helios 300. This is one of Acer’s most affordable gaming notebook that comes with Nvidia GTX 1060. So how does the Acer Predator Helios 300 fare? Well, check it out on our review below.

A Premium feel for gamers

The Acer Predator Helios 300 packs a metal chassis that has a brushed metal look that combines the Predator’s color – blacks and reds. The design is mean and it is really fitting for a gaming laptop, the combination of the red and black color might be the same with ASUS ROG but Acer Predator has a different approach and with the predator, it’s leaner and a sharper one.

The lid of the laptop is composed of the predator logo and also two slanted red lines with the brushed metal look. Unfortunately, the Predator logo of the laptop doesn’t light up, unlike most gaming laptops. Below the lid is the large exhaust vents and no, the Acer Predator Helios 300’s exhaust vents don’t suck as this one looks and fitting to its design. The Acer Predator Helios 300 is chunky. It’s chunky and a little bit heavy but if you’re used to bringing gaming laptops then that wouldn’t be a problem to you.

The Acer Predator Helios 300 all the I/Os that you need. There is three USB Type A ports, HDMI Port, USB Type-C, SD Card Reader, audio jack, LAN, and Kensington Lock. And of course, there’s the WiFi and Bluetooth for connectivity.

Keyboard and Touchpad needs improvement

There’s the keyboard that feels soft and not as clicky and snappy as I expected, however, the keyboard of the Acer Predator Helios 300 is still comfortable to use however I wish that the keyboard was softer so it will be more responsive when it comes to gaming. As you can see, the keyboard of the laptop has red backlit and unfortunately, there’s no RGB on this one. The WASD keys are also in red which makes the laptop’s WASD keys easier to find.

The touchpad of the notebook is one of the things that I don’t like with the Acer Predator Helios 300. It’s spacious but the touchpad is too uncomfortable to use and it’s hard to press on. I highly recommend getting a mouse when you get the Acer Predator Helios 300.

Just an ok display

The Acer Predator Helios 300 got a 15.6-inch Full HD display. Yes, it’s a fine display but not a  great one. It’s fine for watching movies and playing games however the colors don’t really pop-out. Also, this is just a 60Hz, display, no G-Sync in here so yeah, you don’t really have an advantage on this one.

But again, the colors are just fine and I wasn’t disappointed with it. But compared to its competitors at its range, the Acer Predator Helios 300 falls short.

A really nice audio

One of the things that I love with the Acer Predator Helios 300 is its Audio. It comes Dolby Audio app and you set different profiles depending on your mood. And the speakers? Well, they’re great. Whenever I play music on Spotify or watching movies, the audio is just crisp and clear on the Acer Predator Helios 300.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 inside

Inside the laptop is a Nvidia GTX 1060 GPU with 6GB of VRAM. This GPU has an immense power and most of the games that you want to run on the laptop won’t have any problem. There’s also a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU inside with 8GB of RAM. We tested the Acer Predator Helios 300 using 3DMark and here are the scores that we got.

That’s a pretty good numbers for its specifications. In the gaming department, I’ve tested Watchdogs 2 (1080p, ultra settings) and I was able to render an average of 35 fps. In Witcher 3, I was able to manage to get an average of 50 fps. In CS:GO, I got a pretty good average 103 fps. While in Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds which is still in beta, I manage to have an average of 55 fps.

Despite its pretty good numbers, the Acer Predator Helios 300 falls short in HDD. The Acer Predator Helios 300 that we reviewed only got a single 1T HDD and unfortunately, it’s only at 5200RPM which tends to be slower than I expected. Actually while Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, I’ve noticed that it takes some time before the game loads because of its slow HDD speed. So is there a solution to this? Well, it’s actually easy. Just add in an SSD in the laptop. Oh, and yes, the laptop’s memory is really easy to upgrade.

Heat

Gaming notebooks are expected to be hot when in load. Under simple and not so much heavy workloads, I manage to get around 40-45 degrees Celsius on the CPU. However, when playing games, I’ve noticed that I’ve reached more than 70 degrees Celsius. Most of the heat came from the upper right of the keyboard while the touchpad and its sides don’t heat up that much.

Good Battery life

The Acer Predator Helios 300 got a pretty good battery life I was able to get 5 hours of normal usage on the laptop however if you’re gonna use the laptop for gaming while on battery (I suggest that you don’t do that because the performance will be reduced) you’ll get around an hour and a half or two.

The Apps

The Acer Predator Helios 300 also comes with applications like the Predator Sense which lets you control the fan speeds but unfortunately, maxing out the fan speeds makes the laptop noisier. And of course, there is also some other bloatware that comes in the Acer Predator Helios 300 and I’m pretty sure that you wouldn’t use most of them.

Verdict

The Acer Predator Helios 300 is a powerful laptop. Yes, you got the Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor inside and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU. The laptop gets hotter than expected but it still works well and it is really powerful. This gaming notebook is really nice to have. A lot of gamers will love this notebook, however, if you’re planning to buy this, be sure to upgrade this notebook with an SSD in its extra slot as the HDD that comes with it is really slow and it might affect your gameplay experience.

Overall, this notebook is a powerful one. The thermals aren’t perfect but I’m very satisfied with it. The performance of the notebook is just doing well too except for the Hard Disk. So if you’re looking for a gaming notebook that is bang for the back then you might want to look at the Acer Predator Helios 300 with Intel Core i7 and Nvidia GTX 1060 inside. The notebook is now available for Php 77,000.

ASUS Zenfone 4 Max Review

0

ASUS has simultaneously released the Zenfone 4 series in the country and the most affordable of them all is the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max. Just like the other Zenfones, the Zenfone 4 Max is an affordable smartphone and yet, it packs a big battery inside its chassis. But unlike the previous Max models, the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max packs a dual lens camera. So what do I think about the smartphone? Check out our review below.

Solid but thick

The ASUS Zenfone Max series are known to be thicker than most smartphones as the Max series packs a larger battery compared to the competition. Nonetheless, the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max is still comfortable to hold because of its curve body design. The body? It’s pretty solid because this one packs a metal build. Yes, the design is simple but it feels solid.

There’s nothing really to hate about its build aside from its thicker profile compared to its competitors. The fingerprint scanner has also been changed from the back to the front which also serves as the home button of the smartphone. And of course, the capacitive buttons are alongside the home button of the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max.

It’s 2017 but ASUS still uses MicroUSB on the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max. Well, I understand since this is their budget smartphone and it’s an advantage for some people who already invested in Micro USB accessories and also, Micro USB accessories are cheap. And speaking of accessories, the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max comes with a USB OTG that you can use for file storage and also for charging other devices. Yes, you can use the ASUS Zenfone 4 max as a power bank.

The smartphone’s LTE connectivity is quite good but I’m not surprised because this one uses a Qualcomm processor. We didn’t had any problems with Wi-Fi too as the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max can easily scan and detect Wi-Fi hotspots.

Average Display

The ASUS Zenfone 4 Max got a 5.5-inch HD display. It’s not the best one in the market even at its price range but ASUS needs to compromise its display to HD for a longer battery life. Well, the display quality of the smartphone is just average. Actually, it’s even better than the one that we found on the ASUS Zenfone 4 Selfie.

I was quite happy with its color reproduction and viewing angles. Again, it’s not perfect but the display of the smartphone is quite able for everyday use without any problems.

Same processing power

This news might be disappointing to some as the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max packs the same processor that was used on the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max. For gamers, this might be a dealbreaker as there are no improvements in performance, however, the battery of the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max is bigger and it’s back on 5000mAh which is the same battery capacity of the original ASUS Zenfone 4 Max.

When it comes to playing games, the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max, well, the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max performs as I expected. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor can handle most apps well and casual games will be just fine such as Mobile Legends. But don’t expect high settings on games like NBA 2k17.

A better UI

The hardware inside is not a big change compared to the previous Zenfone 3 Max but this time, the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max now uses a more optimized and faster ZenUI 4.0. The bloatware have been minimized and I noticed that the smartphone is faster compared to the previous ASUS Zenfone 3 Max. The apps are streamlined and the apps barely lag now thanks to its better UI experience.

Amazing Battery Life

Its biggest selling point is its battery and the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max doesn’t disappoint. The smartphone does have a really good great battery. It delivers the numbers that I expect on a smartphone with 5000mAh battery and the smartphone would last up to 3 days on average use and even 1 ½ day at heavy usage. This smartphone is great for those people who are using their smartphones too much and want a longer battery life.

There’s a problem with this smartphone though. Yes, there’s a large 5000mAh battery capacity inside but the smartphone doesn’t support fast charging so yeah, it’ll take more than 2 hours before you can fully charge your smartphone.

Dual-Lens Camera

The main focus of the ASUS Zenfone 4 series is the dual lens cameras and on the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max, they placed a 13-megapixel dual-lens camera at the back that consists of a standard lens and also a 120-degree wide-angle lens that is great for taking landscape photos and also wider shots (Duh!).

The ASUS Zenfone 4 Max is one of the most affordable smartphones that comes with a real dual lens camera. The ASUS Zenfone 4 Max’s rear camera isn’t really that great. Both cameras at the back suffered at lowlight conditions and unfortunately, the game is not that good sometimes even at decent conditions. Check out the photos that I took using the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max.

The wide-angle lens at the back of the smartphone is really ideal for taking landscapes, however, you can notice that the wide-angle lens produces softer and reddish skin tones despite having decent lighting conditions. The standard lens takes better photos than the wide-angle lens but I’m not satisfied with its quality.

Verdict

The ASUS Zenfone 4 Max delivers what it promises – a long battery life. It’s also one of the most affordable in the Zenfone 4 family and probably the longest to operate on a single charge. The ASUS Zenfone 4 Max might have a disappointing camera and the same processor from the previous generation but the smartphone is one of the most affordable dual-lens cameras in the market and also the experience and performance of the smartphone have been a lot better.

So if you’re in the market of people who are looking for a decent Android smartphone that would last more than a day and you only play some casual games then the ASUS Zenfone 4 Max is the right smartphone for you. The ASUS Zenfone 4 Max is now available for Php9,995.
