I know, the Zenfone 3 Deluxe series has been out for a while but we’ve never seen or heard of a 5.5-inch variant of the Zenfone 3 Deluxe. So what’s inside this smartphone? Well, the hardware of the ASUS Zenfone 3 Deluxe 5.5 is basically almost similar to the ASUS Zenfone 3 but with some improvements on its specs and it now also rocks the all-metal body with no antenna lines of the ASUS Zenfone 3 Deluxe.

ASUS Zenfone 3 Max Review

0

Many people are clamoring for longer battery life rather than flashy features and thin body. Why? Because most smartphones these days doesn’t last a day and there are a lot of people who are really annoyed with their smartphones as they always need a powerbank or a charger with them most of the time. But thankfully, there are smartphones like the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max that has a big battery capacity and is designed to last long than most smartphones. Today, we’ll review the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max.

asus-zenfone-3-max-1

Before we talked about the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max, let’s talk about the ASUS Zenfone Max, its predecessor. The ASUS Zenfone Max was one of our favorite smartphones last year as it can last up to more than 2 days of use because of the 5000mAh battery. In where you can find our review here.

A thinner and premium body

asus-zenfone-3-max-10

One of the things that we love with the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max is that it doesn’t feel that the smartphone has a 4100mAh of battery because the smartphone isn’t that thick compared to the ASUS Zenfone Max. It is thin for its battery and then there’re the right curves for your hands which make the smartphone feel comfortable to the hand.

asus-zenfone-3-max-11

asus-zenfone-3-max-6

The ASUS Zenfone 3 Max also opted for a metal body which makes the smartphone feel premium compared to last year’s plastic. At the back, you’ll see the non-removable back with the two thin lines at the top and bottom that look better than the white lines on the iPhone and then you can also see the fingerprint sensor camera and LED Flash. Surprisingly, the camera of the Zenfone 3 max isn’t protruding.

asus-zenfone-3-max-4

It’s a unibody device and I love it while on the front, you get the 2.5D curved glass with no capacitive buttons and just the ASUS logo below and it looks minimalistic to me while the buttons are on the side. Since there’s no removable back, there’s the hybrid sim card tray on the side.

asus-zenfone-3-max-5

Compared to the ASUS Zenfone 3, Zenfone 3 Ultra, and Zenfone 3 Deluxe, the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max is using the Micro USB than USB Type-C. Well, it’s not really disappointing for me since as of this posting, Micro USB accessories are cheaper than Type-C and yes, USB OTG is really important on this one as the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max can also be used as a power bank to your other device.

A smaller display

The ASUS Zenfone 3 Max has a smaller 5.2-inch display which means that the smartphone has a smaller footprint and actually, I was not surprised that the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max still packs an HD display since smaller resolution tends to have a smaller battery consumption.

asus-zenfone-3-max-7

Nonetheless, the display of the smartphone looks good especially that 2.5D glass which adds more sexiness and premium feel on the smartphone. The display looks fine even when using outside, the viewing angles and color reproduction was just fine. Not a great display but it will do.

asus-zenfone-3-max-8

Surprisingly, a MediaTek processor

One thing that surprised me when the ASUS Zenfone 3 max was announced was the company’s choice of processor. Most of the time, companies tend to use Qualcomm processors as they consume less power compared to the competition but the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max chose to use the MediaTek MT6737T processor. Was it a bad choice? No.

asus-zenfone-3-max-12

I was actually surprised that the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max doesn’t heat up that much compared to other smartphones with a MediaTek processor. The performance was pretty good too and ASUS decided to put in a larger 3GB of RAM which means that the smartphone can handle more apps and games without problems.

In terms of gaming, I had no idea with the processor when In got the review unit but I was happy to test out the smartphone as it can handle popular heavy games such as Asphalt 8 without problems and even NBA 2k17 at the low settings.

asus-zenfone-3-max-13

As always, we’ve already expected the bloatware that come with the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max and I’m happy to tell you that some cool bloatware like the Game Genie works fine on the ASUS Zenfone 3 max and yes, there were no random slowdowns on the smartphone. It’s fun to use.

Better camera but lacks laser auto-focus

One of the things that I love with the ASUS Zenfone Max was the laser auto-focus and on the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max, ASUS decided to chop it down. Maybe because to lower the manufacturing cost of the smartphone. But don’t worry, because the camera has improved over the predecessor but the slower focusing time was noticeable on the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max.

Some of the shots that I took tend to be overexposed and sometimes, the images are a hit and miss but again, it was still better than its predecessor. Check out the shots that I took using the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max below.

Lower battery capacity but still good battery life

I was surprised when I discovered that the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max has a lower battery life compared to its predecessor. Nonetheless, you would still get a long battery life on the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max’s 4100mAh battery. In my average use of the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max, I still get two days of average use and at heavy load, the smartphone can last up to a day of use or around 18 hours of use. Still not bad for me.

Verdict

Despite the trade-offs on the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max, I still think that the smartphone is still good. Why? Yes, it has a smaller battery life but it can still last more than a day without the need of a power bank. Yes, it lacks the laser autofocus on this one but it can now produce better photos.

asus-zenfone-3-max-3

There are still a lot of things to like in this smartphone including the sexy and premium body, the fingerprint sensor, and a pretty good performance. If you’re looking for a premium smartphone that lasts long and wouldn’t drain your wallet, then the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max is right smartphone for you.

But if you want a smartphone that has a long battery life, a laser autofocus, a better and faster Qualcomm processor, and a bigger display then better wait for the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max 5.5. Yes, that one has a much better hardware specs but expect that the bigger brother has a more expensive price compared to this one. If your budget only fits for this smartphone then get this, because the ASUS Zenfone 3 Max is really a good smartphone.

The ASUS Zenfone 3 Max is now available for P8,950.

ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQ

Having a decent gaming monitor is a must when you’re a real hardcore gamer especially if you have a graphics card that is really powerful like the GTX 1080 or the Titan XP. But of course, having a gaming monitor means that your display must be future proof and it must adapt to every game that you play on your PC. And today, we’ll review the ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQ, a pretty good gaming monitor that you should really take a look at.

.

“>dsc04901

ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQ has the design genes from the ROG. You can see the Mayan-inspired look and also the trapezoidal design. Another noticeable thing about this monitor is the ROG logo that is located on the base along with the red backlit ring and yes, it’s glowing and it really adds to the gaming feel of the monitor.

dsc04864

dsc04853

The back looks neat with its edgy design and one thing that really made it look cool from the back is the ASUS ROG badge. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me but I really find it cool. An advantage of most gaming monitors compared to conventional monitors is that most gaming monitors have an ergonomic adjust the height, rotation, and swivelling and with the ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQ, it really does a good job on all of that and also the monitor has an included VESA mount in case you want to mount the monitor.

dsc04865

dsc04899

Another interesting thing about this monitor is the ports. It comes with two USB 3.0 ports, earphone jack, HDMI and of course DisplayPort. These ports might be placed on the back but unfortunately, I really had a hard time with this one as this ports are facing downward.

dsc04897

Most gamers who can afford the ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQ might already have a speaker or a cool headphone but in case you want to rely on the monitor for the speaker, there’s a pair of two-watt speakers that is built-in to the monitor. Actually, I was a little bit disappointed with it as I expected the monitor’s speaker to be louder but nonetheless, the output was crisp and clear.

dsc04859

To access the monitor’s settings, you’ll have to check out the buttons and the joystick at the back of the monitor. Yes, a joystick. The joystick is easy to use and I can easily control the user-friendly settings on the monitor.

dsc04866

The settings let you control the blue light filter of the monitor in case your eyes get really annoyed with the monitor, reducing ghosting, adjusting the light on the base, and much more. Basically, the settings cover most of the basic things that you need on a gaming monitor however, I felt that there is a need for more preset on the monitor.

Again, this is a gaming monitor and of course, a gaming monitor would be useless if there’s no adaptive synchronization technology on this monitor. The ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQ supports Nvidia G-sync on its DisplayPort and damn, it’s really a game changer for most gamers. However, I found it annoying that I still have to activate the Nvidia G-Sync on the settings of the monitor.

dsc04861

Again, the 27” display of the monitor packs a 4K resolution. There’s the matte coating for the display so you don’t have to worry about the monitor being reflective and then there’s the thin bezels which make the monitor look sexier and edgier than most monitors. The 4ms response time, 350 cd/m2 and a viewing angles of up to 178 degrees.  The monitor might not have the best specifications but for a gaming monitor, I am already satisfied.

dsc04869

The contrasts of the monitor need a little adjustment as I have notice that blacks in some videos need some improvements however color accuracy on this one is good. But in case you’re not satisfied with it, it’s actually very easy to adjust the settings of the monitor.

Again, the advantage of having this monitor is the 4K resolution. The images and videos that I shoot tend to be crisper and better compared to other monitors. Sometimes, games don’t need anti-aliasing because they’re already really sharp. Again, adjusting the settings of the monitor will probably lead to a better display quality.

Verdict

dsc04888

ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQ is a really good product from the company. It has everything that you need and wants on a gaming monitor. The adjustable position and the display really has a good color accuracy. Do I recommend this one? Definitely but of course, it would be better if your GPU can support this one. IF you’re planning on buying this one, better prepare a powerful GPU too like the ASUS ROG Strix GTX 1060 and up.
