ASUS Zenfone Selfie vs. Samsung Galaxy S6

0

This year, ASUS has been aggressive with their smartphones. They launched different Zenfones this year including their flagship smartphone, the ASUS Zenfone 2. Recently, they launched different variants of the Zenfones including the ASUS Zenfone Selfie. It’s not their best smartphone but it features a good rear camera and a  front camera with an Dual-tone Dual LED Front flash which can’t be found on most smartphones. How does this perform? Well, let’s compare it with Samsung’s flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S6

Design

DSC01089

The ASUS Zenfone Selfie still resembles the design of the Zenfone 2. There’s the arc back which makes it easier to hold and the rear volume button. But this time, the Zenfone Selfie comes in different colors and they don’t feature a brushed metal design back. Instead, they opt for matte back with chic colors. And yes, it is still handy despite having a 5.5-inch display.

Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S6 packs a glass and metal design but that comes with a compromise because the Samsung Galaxy S6 doesn’t come with a removable battery and a MicroSD card slot. The feel is premium and its materials are top notch but it is slippery and it comes with some compromises.

Experience

DSC01114

Both smartphones pack a different chipset. Obviously, The Samsung Galaxy S6 got a better hardware thanks to its powerful Exynos Chipset with 3GB of RAM while the Zenfone Selfie only packs Snapdragon 615 processor with 3GB of RAM. When it comes to numbers, the difference between the two are far from each other but that doesn’t mean that the experience between the two are different.

DSC01112

These days, a better chipset doesn’t mean that the experience will be inferior compared to other smartphones. Most processors these days are already powerful to give you a smooth and flawless Android experience. In the case of Samsung Galaxy S6 and ASUS Zenfone Selfie, you’ll barely notice the difference in performance when you are not so techie or a hardcore user. Most games would run smoothly and navigating on the smartphone is very smooth. Didn’t had any problems with normal usage on both phones.

However, the main difference between the two that I really notice is its UI. When it comes to UI, the ZenUI of the Zenfone Selfie is superior than the TouchWiz UI of Samsung. Why? Because the ZenUI is more optimized and it is faster to use than TouchWiz UI. I noticed that despite having a powerful Exynos processor inside the Samsung Galaxy S6, it is much easier and faster to navigate on the ZenUI.

Both smartphones come with bloatwares and I really appreciate that Samsung has lessened the bloatwares that are preinstalled on the Samsung Galaxy S6, but again, the TouchWiz UI is still slow and I experienced a lot of bugs. While the Zenfone Selfie’s ZenUI is fast and flawless. I rarely experience lags and slowdowns on the ZenUI which really affects our use of smartphones.

Camera

DSC01105

DSC01099

When it comes to the camera department, the Samsung Galaxy S6 comes with a 16-Megapixel Rear camera with LED flash and a 5-megapixel wide angle front camera while the ASUS Zenfone Selfie got a 13-Megapixel Rear Camera with Dual-Tone Dual-LED Flash with Laser Auto-focus with a 13-Megapixel Front Camera with the same Dual-Tone Dual-LED Flash which makes for great selfies. Check out the shots that I took using both phones.

Galaxy S6

Zenfone Selfie

P_20150825_002717_LL

At the night shot, you could notice that the ASUS Zenfone Selfie got a brighter shot however the image is smaller on the Zenfone Selfie but hey, the lowlight shot was really bright on both smartphones and I was amazed that the Zenfone Selfie could have a brighter image.

Galaxy S6

20150825_122317

Zenfone SelfieP_20150825_122305_HDR

In these images, the light is too bright that’s why I used HDR on both smartphones. The Zenfone Selfie produces a darker shot but with more details and with the right focus while the Samsung Galaxy S6 has a brighter image and it is a little bit overexposed on the light.

Galaxy S6

20150827_174003

Zenfone Selfie

P_20150827_174043_HDR

In these images, you could notice that the Zenfone Selfie got a deeper and darker HDR Shot. You could notice that the skies are darker and the colors were deeper however on the Samsung Galaxy S6, it has a more natural colors but it isn’t deep as expected.

Galaxy S6

20150825_122154

Zenfone Selfie

P_20150825_122124_BF

In the group selfie shot of both smartphones, both were great. The Samsung Galaxy S6 produces a very warm image with less sharpness while the ASUS Zenfone Selfie produces a better selfie with more sharpness however with more grain and noise.

Galaxy S6

20150825_122431

Zenfone Selfie

P_20150825_122415_HDR

In these photos, I use both the front camera and I noticed that the Samsung Galaxy S6 got a softer image despite removing the beautification feature. The colors were warmer too while the Zenfone Selfie got a more accurate colors with sharper details. It is sharp and the colors were natural however it is grainy than the Samsung Galaxy S6. But if you ask me, I would choose the one on the Zenfone Selfie.

Verdict
The Samsung Galaxy S6 and ASUS Zenfone Selfie got a different hardware and price range but the Zenfone Selfie can match up some of the features of the Samsung Galaxy S6. You should also remember that these smartphones are at the different price range. It’s interesting that midrange smartphones can match up some experiences and some basic tasks of most high end smartphones.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is now available and its phablet brothers, the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus are expected to be available soon while the ASUS Zenfone Selfie is now available for P11,995.

Cherry Mobile Android One G1 Review

1

Recently, Cherry Mobile has introduced their newest Android one smartphone, the Cherry Mobile G1 Android One smartphone. And no folks, this isn’t the Cherry Mobile G1 Smartwatch, this is an Android smartphone. Compared to Gher Android smartphones, this smartphone is part of the Android One program which means that the software and the hardware of this smartphone is certified by Google and it will get the latest Android updates for up to two years

Hardware and Design

Compared to the previous Android One smartphone of Cherry Mobile, this one got a bigger screen and an updated hardware. The looks is really different from the predecessor but the Cherry Mobile G1 Android One smartphone is pleasing to the eye. It packs a no-nonsense and simple design which is really a plus for me because this smartphone looks good and it is also comfortable to use.

20150911_171411_001

Just like other Android One smartphones, the Cherry Mobile G1 Android One doesn’t have a capacitive buttons. Instead, this smartphone opt for an on-screen buttons which takes a little bit of your display but minimizes the bezels on your smartphone. If you’ve seen an Android One smartphone or a Nexus device before, you would also notice its round earpiece which is a trademark of Android One and Nexus devices.

20150831_08452420150831_084456

The sides sports a plastic chrome and black accents and for some reason, a lot of people have mistakenly thought that the sides of this smartphone is made up of metal. At the back, you’ll see the removable back cover which has a rubber matte texture with a solid feeling. Opening it would also reveal the Dual Micro Sim card slot along with the microSD card slot. Luckily for you guys, the Cherry Mobile G1 does have a removable 2500mAh battery.20150831_084511

One of the advantages of having this smartphone over the previous Android One smartphone of Cherry Mobile is the LTE connectivity. Thanks to Google for ditching the aging MT6582 processor in favour of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, the Cherry Mobile G1 Android One smartphone now packs dual LTE. And for people who loves to play music on their smartphone, you won’t be disappointed with the crisp and clear quality of the speaker that is located below the smartphone.

20150831_084550

The smartphone’s storage has been bumped up to 16GB along with 2GB of RAM to give you a more satisfying and more awesome experience on the smartphone. The storage is also expandable thanks to the MicroSD card slot.

Battery Life

The smartphone got a 2500mAh battery which was able to last a day of use. I was actually surprised that this smartphone was able to last up to a day of average use because most local branded smartphones won’t last up to more than a day.

Display

Normally, I wouldn’t get excited with the display of the smartphone if I know that it only packs an HD resolution or the price of the smartphone is pretty cheap. Well, the Cherry Mobile G1 Android One changed that because the Cherry Mobile G1 Android One’s 5-inch HD display is pretty great.

Yes, it might be only HD but the colors were really damn good for its price range and the brightness of the smartphone was really awesome. Sunlight legibility was great too and for a 5-inch HD display, the smartphone’s display is crisp too. Yes, I love the display of the Cherry Mobile G1 Android One smartphone.

Software and Performance

This is probably the biggest strength of this smartphone. I have to be honest with you guys, I love stock Android. I love Nexus devices and I like the feel of Android One smartphones because they’re smooth and I experience zero lags and it is probably the closest thing to the speeds of  iOS and Windows Phone.

20150831_084428

Just like other Android one devices, the Cherry Mobile G1 Android One only features Google applications but there are two added application that are preinstalled on the device which are eWarranty for the warranty of the smartphone and ES File Explorer, the built-in file manager for the smartphone.

As of this moment, there’s no Android Marshmallow update for this smartphone but there’s no need to be disappointed with that because the Cherry Mobile G1 Android One smartphone is comfortable to use. It’s fast, fluid and the experience is really different compared to other smartphones that has preinstalled UI on them.

If you’re a newbie Android user, you wouldn’t hate it because it’s still user-friendly and if you’re worried about the updates, well guys, Google has promised that this smartphone would have updates for up to two years. So probably, we might see this smartphone running on Android N soon.

This smartphone packs a Snapdragon 410 processor along with 2GB of RAM. When you base it on the white paper, this smartphone is categorized as a midrange smartphone. Most of you also probably haven’t tried using Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor before. Well, this processor performs good for a mid-range smartphone. It has performed as expected and when it comes to games, most games would probably run on this smartphone without lags however don’t expect the highest settings on all games.

Actually, I’ve used this smartphone for playing different games such as Clash of Clans, Asphalt 8, UFC and Stellacept Online. The three latter games that I’ve mentioned requires a pretty good hardware to run smoothly and yes, the Cherry Mobile G1 Android One smartphone didn’t disappoint. Yes, sometimes you’ll experience the drop in framerates but no to the point of the game not being playable. I’m very satisfied with its performance. At Antutu, I got a score of 22074 which is just expected on a smartphone with this specifications.

Camera

The Cherry Mobile One G1 one packs an 13-Megapixel Rear camera with Dual-LED flash which is an upgrade from its predecessors

20150831_084452

Most of the shots that I got were sharp at well-lit conditions and got the right colors however I noticed that the shots sometimes are overexposed. At lowlight conditions, there are less noise than I expected. It was able to capture brighter photos too.IMG_20150827_174347 IMG_20150827_174423 IMG_20150827_174516

Verdict

The Cherry Mobile One G1 is a big upgrade from its Android one predecessor. It has a bigger and brighter 5-inch display which is now a norm in smartphones. The Snapdragon 410 processor inside it might not be the best when it comes to performance but it performs well for basic tasks and I didn’t experienced lags on the smartphone. Oh and there’s LTE too. This is a really good smartphone if you want to experience a lag-free and silky smooth Android experience.

The Cherry Mobile One G1 is now available for P5,999

However, compared to the ASUS Zenfone 2, the Zenfone Selfie doesn’t have an Intel Atom processor and instead, it is running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor with 3GB of RAM. The ASUS Zenfone 2 Deluxe

Deluxe_ZE551ML_Pink_ (resize)

This is probably the most lovely Zenfone you’ll ever see. The Zenfone 2 Deluxe packs the same processing power of the ASUS Zenfone 2 ZE551ML however this one has a tesselated polygonal design back which looks very different compared to other smartphones. It looks good and it is really attractive to the eyes. Another eye-popping feature of the ASUS Zenfone 2 is it packs a 128GB of Internal Storage. Yeah, that’s the storage of the smartphone and there’s still a microSD card slot for expansion. Awesome huh?
