Valve Steam Machine Starts at CAD $1,509 in Canada

Valve has finally revealed the official pricing and availability of its new Steam Machine, a compact SteamOS gaming PC designed for playing your Steam library on a TV or desktop and it’s designed to compete against the likes of Xbox Series S|X and Playstation 5.

Unfortunately, it is not cheap. The Steam Machine starts at CAD $1,509 for the 512GB model, while the most expensive configuration costs CAD $2,038 with 2TB of storage and the new Steam Controller.

Steam Machine Canadian Pricing

Valve will offer four Steam Machine configurations in Canada:

  • Steam Machine 512GB: CAD $1,509
  • Steam Machine 512GB with Steam Controller: CAD $1,628
  • Steam Machine 2TB: CAD $1,919
  • Steam Machine 2TB with Steam Controller: CAD $2,038

The 2TB models also include additional red fabric and solid walnut magnetic faceplates alongside the standard black faceplate. Reservations are now open through Steam. The initial registration window ends on June 25 at 11:00 AM MT, while the first purchase invitations will be sent beginning June 29.

Powered by AMD and SteamOS

Inside the small cube-shaped design is a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 processor with six cores and 12 threads. It is paired with an AMD RDNA 3 GPU as well, 16GB of DDR5 RAM and 8GB of GDDR6 video memory. Valve says the Steam Machine delivers more than six times the performance of the Steam Deck.

Other features include Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, USB-C, four USB-A ports and a microSD card slot.

The Steam Machine runs SteamOS 3 and also includes a KDE Plasma desktop mode, allowing owners to use it more like a traditional Linux gaming PC.

A Gaming PC Rather Than a Traditional Console

At CAD $1,509 before tax, the Steam Machine is considerably more expensive than traditional gaming consoles. However, Valve is positioning it as a compact gaming PC with access to the Steam ecosystem rather than a console locked to one platform.

The hardware and simplified SteamOS interface could make it attractive to players who want PC gaming in the living room without building their own system. Still, the high Canadian pricing could make the Steam Machine a difficult sell against gaming laptops, custom desktop PCs and current-generation consoles.
