ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra Review

0

When the ASUS Zenfone 3 series was announced, the surprising product of the 3 is the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra. It is the biggest Zenfone ever and it packs some features that are aimed at consumers who are really into media consumption such as watching movies on Iflix, Netflix, and YouTube. Do you want to know more about this device? Check out our review below

It’s a giant smartphone

 asus-zenfone-3-ultra-6

At 6.8-inch, Of course, you would already expect that the smartphone packs a gigantic display and the looks? Actually, looking at it reminds me of the Galaxy Note because of the inclusion of the home button on the front which also serves as the fingerprint sensor. The oval volume button was also placed at the back which retains the identity of the Zenfone.

asus-zenfone-3-ultra-5

The smartphone does have a curve sides but not a curved back which makes the smartphone harder to hold. But knowing that the smartphone has a display near a tablet, I guess you would already expect that the smartphone wouldn’t be ergonomic to your hands.

asus-zenfone-3-ultra-7

Just like its Zenfone brothers, the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra packs a premium build and in this smartphone, we got a flat metal back and curve sides with chamfered edges. However, the design and construction of the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra reminds me of a Galaxy Note but nonetheless, the build of the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra is really premium.

asus-zenfone-3-ultra-8

Present on the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra is also a USB Type-C and according to the white paper, the Zenfone 3 Ultra will be able to output video via HDMI on its Type-C Port. I know, that sounds really great however I don’t have that type of port and right now, there are only a few and probably expensive USB Type-C cables that give HDMI output. Oh and yes, the Zenfone 3 Ultra supports fast charging and the smartphone can also be used as a powerbank.

ASUS is also really serious with its speakers as this one does have a crisp, loud, and clear speakers on the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra and yes, it is really amazing and for movie lovers, this one supports Virtual 7.1 surround sound and the Zen ear in-earphones that come with it sounds really damn good. The ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra is truly a device made for media consumption.

asus-zenfone-3-ultra-11

A GIGANTIC DISPLAY

Alright, I’m confused. Actually, I don’t know whether this device is a tablet or a phone. It has a 6.8-inch display and actually, sometimes I feel awkward answering calls from this phone because this smartphone is just too big. But don’t worry, after a few days of using it you’ll get used to it.

asus-zenfone-3-ultra-4

One of the biggest features of the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra is its 4k TV-grade processor inside its hardware. It actually helps a lot to make your multimedia experience even better because it brings blur-free and really smooth videos with it whatever movies or videos that you play with it. It’s actually a cool feature and you can’t find that on most smartphones.

asus-zenfone-3-ultra-10

According to the specifications, the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra supports HDMI on its USB Type-C and I think it’s a great feature to those people who are always on the go and use their laptops for presentations. Instead, they can just use their Zenfone 3 Ultra and plug in their Type-C to HDMI adapters. However, it’s still hard to find thoseUSB Type-C to HDMI adaptors

asus-zenfone-3-ultra-3

There might be a 4K TV-grade processor inside the ASUS Zenfone 3 but the display is still a 1080p display. I know, by today’s standards, most smartphones are now on 4K, especially at this size. But looking and using the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra’s 6.8-inch Full HD display is still nice, you wouldn’t notice the difference between a 2k or 4k display and a Full HD if you’re not really into it. And if you’re a VR fan, well, the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra might be too big for you and I’m pretty sure that most headsets wouldn’t fit on this one.

Overall, the 6.8-inch display is not for everyone but for those people who are into multimedia consumption, I’m pretty sure that they would love it, however, some people might find this too big. But in my use, I love it and the colors were great and it is very useable even outside.

A more powerful processor inside

Inside the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra is a more powerful processor than the one on the ASUS Zenfone 3 and whenever you’re planning on using it for light use or heavy gaming, the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra can handle it pretty well. I’ve tried editing videos and also watching 4K videos on the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra and it’s very flawless. I don’t actually have any problems with it.

asus-zenfone-3-ultra-9

Playing games on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 with 4GB RAM inside isn’t a problem too and I can even play NBA 2k17 at the highest settings without a single lag, however, it isn’t running on the smoothest frame rates.

ZenUI 3.0 still comes with bloatware

Ok, the ASUS ZenUI 3.0 still comes with a lot of bloatware and when I noticed that after a few weeks of using the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra, the memory usage is a little bit too high but still, I didn’t experience lags or slowdowns on the smartphone.

In case you’re using the smartphone in one hand, there’s a one hand operation on the smartphone and it allows you to use the smartphone with a smaller display that you can use with one hand. It’s actually just similar to other brands that have this feature.

A 23-megapixel rear camera

Compared to its smaller brother, the ASUS Zenfone 3, this one has a better camera sensor and there’s the 23-megapixel rear camera on the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra and get mixed results with its camera. Yes, the camera is better than the other Zenfones that I’ve tried but it isn’t the best camera smartphone in its price range.

Most photos that I took under pretty good lighting conditions resulted to some great photos but some are a miss. Same with the low-light conditions. Check out the sample shots that I took and be the judge of it.

Verdict

 asus-zenfone-3-ultra-2

The ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra is the biggest Zenfone in the series and not everybody would like its size. It actually feels like a tablet with phone functionalities. If you’re planning on buying a giant smartphone for watching movies, browsing the web, and playing games then you would probably love the smartphone. The 4K TV processor is a big game changer for people who are into watching movies. As long as you like a big smartphone then, the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra is probably the best giant smartphone for you because this smartphone is truly a multimedia monster.

The ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra is now available

As you may have noticed, the Cherry Mobile Flare series’ prices have gone up compared to last year but I tell you this, the specs of the smartphone might not be enticing to some but I’m pretty sure that you’re gonna love how it feels and how it looks now.

All of the Cherry Mobile Flare series smartphones that we’ve tried doesn’t feel like it’s a Cherry Mobile smartphone. All of them feel more premium and even better compared to other Cherry Mobile smartphones that we’ve tried before.

.”>Cherry Mobile Flare 5

Cherry Mobile Flare 5

Each smartphone has its unique feature depending on the prerefence of the consumers. For the Flare 5, the smartphone packs a very beautiful back cover that can really be enticing. The display is also Super AMOLED that’s why the smartphone has a display that looks better compared to other smartphones.

.”>Cherry Mobile Flare 5

Cherry Mobile Flare 5

While the Flare S5 has a little bit better specifications compared to the Flare 5 but there’s the lack of Super AMOLED display but you’ll get a fingerprint sensor, USB Type C and a different design while the Flare S5 Plus is a bigger version of the Flare S5.

Cherry Mobile Flare S5

Cherry Mobile Flare S5

The Flare X2 however is the new brother of the very popular Flare X series and it now runs on a Snapdragon 430 and there’s a 4GB of RAM which is more than powerful for most users. It’s a great followup to the Flare X and the Flare X2 looks and feels really great. It really feels very premium now.

.”>Cherry Mobile Flare X2

Cherry Mobile Flare X2

Cherry Mobile Flare X2

Cherry Mobile Flare X2

While for users who are always looking for a longer battery then the Flare S5 Power is the best smartphone for you. Why? Because it has a 6050mAh battery inside it and I believe that this smartphone has the biggest battery that I’ve seen on the smartphone at its size

Cherry Mobile Flare Infinity

Cherry Mobile Flare Infinity

dsc05953

Finally, there’s the Cherry Mobile Infinity which is the flagship smartphone of Cherry Mobile. It’s a little bit steep at P12,999 but damn, there’s a near bezel-less display on this one and this smartphone is the best looking Android smartphone that I’ve seen from Cherry Mobile. Not only that, the smartphone would also pack a Helio P10 processor with 4GB of RAM which will make you sure that the smartphone can run the apps and games that you want on the smartphone. But again, the display of the smartphone is the main feature here and dang, that display is really awesome.

dsc05946

bezel-less display of the Cherry Mobile Flare Infinity

dsc05956

Overall, the all-new Cherry Mobile Flare smartphones that were announced yesterday are even more premium, solid, and even better. Yes, some of them are more expensive compared to its predecessors but these new smartphones are really worth it for its price. They’re meaner, better, and sexier.

LG G5 Review

0

LG wants to be different this year by offering something that the others doesn’t have a and that’s by having a modular smartphone. And no, this isn’t a concept product because the LG G5 is their current flagship to date and it’s a good one. Thankfully, we got a unit for review from LG Philippines. So what do I think about the smartphone? Check out our review of the smartphone below.

A new design

lg-g5-5

One of the things that I noticed when I saw the leaked photos of this smartphone before it was even announced is that this smartphone doesn’t look really good but in personal, the LG G5 isn’t actually that bad. For some people, they might even love it and when you’re looking at the front, you would easily recognize that it’s an LG smartphone as this one has a resemblance to the LG G3.

lg-g5-15

LG has finally opted for having a metal body compared to last year’s leather but it actually doesn’t feel heavy. The smartphone is light and easy to hold. The curves of the smartphone feel just right in the hand and since this one have a 5.3-inch display, this smartphone isn’t really that big.lg-g5-14

lg-g5-17

Its biggest features are being a modular smartphone. No, it doesn’t work similarly to Google’s Project Ara and for the smartphone to work, you’ll have to remove the lower part of the LG G5 along with its battery. I know, it’s quite annoying since you’ll have to turn off your battery to replace the modular part of the smartphone which they called as LG friends and right now, there are only a few LG friends that are available in the Philippines.

lg-g5-11

Another shift that LG has made this year is the USB Type-C port below the smartphone and yes, if you’ve already invested some MicroUSB power bank and cables, you might want to shift to USB Type-C because this port is the new standard and yes, the LG G5 does charge fast with its USB Type-C port and charger. A pretty awesome feature from Qualcomm.

lg-g5-3

The battery of the LG G5 is rated at 2800mAh and that number isn’t really impressive compared to its competitors but in real life usage, I was actually getting more battery life than expected. I was able to use the smartphone for more than 12 hours without charging it up and that was with the often use of mobile data. Not bad for LG on that one.

Display

lg-g5-6

One thing to love about flagship smartphones is their displays and the LG G5 doesn’t disappoint. The LG G5 packs a 5.3-inch Quad HD Quantum Display. You might not be familiar with the Quantum display but the display of the smartphone is bright and it is very visible outside. The display produces accurate colors and the contrasts were good. Overall, the display of the LG G5 is really good and it is really one of the best in the market right now.

A better software & a powerful performance

 lg-g5-9

First of all, let’s admit that the LG G5 comes with a lot of bloatware but compared to the previous LG smartphones that we’ve reviewed before the LG G5 is fast, swift and the software has been improved really well. I didn’t experience any lags, however, some of the apps that come in the smartphone are really useless in my review

lg-g5-12

One of the biggest advantages of having the LG G5 over other flagship smartphones is the Snapdragon 820 processor and 4 GB of RAM. This smartphone is powerful and since it’s running on Snapdragon 820 processor, there are no games that this smartphone can’t run and compared to other chipsets, this one can run most apps and games smoothly and without problems

lg-g5-7

A surprising dual lens camera

lg-g5-16

This is probably the biggest feature of the smartphone, the dual lens camera. So how does this camera of the LG G5 work? Well, one of them is a wide angle lens which gives you a wider view which is really great for taking photos of landscapes and even groupies. But of course, those lenses have different qualities.

lg-g5-8

The standard lens gives you a f/1.8 aperture which is brighter and perfect for taking photos especially at night and then there’s the wide angle lens with f/2.4 aperture but don’t worry because despite having a different lens, both of this lens work pretty well and they can really shoot good photos and videos.

lg-g5-4

In the standard lens, the smartphone can capture sharp photos but sometimes it tends to be darker than I expected but overall, I’m pretty happy with how the camera of the smartphone worked. While the wide angle lens gives you a wider shot which is perfect for in a lot of circumstances and as I expected, the standard lens performed better than this one but hey, with manual settings, I could get amazing results on both especially if you use the V10 camera app.

Check out the shots that I took using the standard lens

Overall, I’m happy with the shots that I got with the LG G5.

Verdict

lg-g5-19

There are plenty of flagships smartphones that you can get in the market and right now and if you’re looking for a smartphone with the best processing power and smartphone that you always want to use for Instagram and some mobile photography then you might want to take a look at this. Yes, it does have some flaws but its unique features are something that you should take a look at.

Cherry Mobile Alpha Prime 7 Review

0

One of the local brands that still brings Windows devices to the country is Cherry Mobile and in case you’re following the brand, they have a new tablet that is powered by Windows 10 Mobile and it’s the Cherry mobile alpha Prime 7. So what do I think about the tablet? Check out our review below

A handy tablet

It’s a handy tablet despite having a 7-inch display thanks to its narrow design although it is still not comfortable to use in one hand but again, it is still comfortable compared to other tablets at its size thanks to its slanted sides. The back also got a metal build which adds to the solid feel of the tablet, however, when you tap it, you would easily feel the hollow feeling of the tablet.

cherry-mobile-alpha-prime-9

At the metal back of the tablet is where you can also find the speaker which doesn’t perform with the performance that I expect. You can also see the Windows Phone and the Cherry Mobile logo. And no, the back isn’t removable and you have to rely on the flaps at the top in where you could place your MicroSD card and the sim card.

cherry-mobile-alpha-prime-7

cherry-mobile-alpha-prime-13

The MicroUSB port and the 3.5mm audio jack are also placed at the top of the tablet. While the buttons are placed on the sides. And since this tablet also acts as a phone and actually, it is running on a smartphone OS, this one has a speaker earpiece in the front. The front is quite clean as this one doesn’t feature any capacitive buttons on the front.

It’s not an HD display

Look, this is an affordable phablet and you should also take note that this one packs a 7-inch display with a resolution of 1024×600. Actually, it’s not the best display that you can see and since we’re getting on-screen buttons with a smaller resolution, the navigational buttons are also located below the screen which takes a large space from the display of the tablet.

cherry-mobile-alpha-prime-12

It’s Windows 10 mobile not Windows 10

Ok, so here’s the probably the reason why you’re buying this tablet. First, this is a Windows 10 tablet with phone functionalities however, you should also take note that this phablet is running on Windows 10 Mobile because of its ARM processor. Yes, this one can’t run the Windows games such as DOTA 2, Steam, and other Windows applications. You could only rely on the Windows App Store which only has a few apps and games in store for you.

cherry-mobile-alpha-prime-4

As expected, this tablet would come with just a Snapdragon 210 processor, it’s faster than the Snapdragon 200 and actually, navigating on this tablet is smooth and without problems despite using this processor and only a 1GB of RAM. Playing games would be only for casuals and light games, however, heavy games would not be feasible for this one. Also, browsing the web using Microsoft edge would be a good use for this tablet.

Camera

Ok, so this tablet got a 5-megapixel rear camera and I won’t really expect from this one since the Alpha Prime 7 is a Windows tablet. Taking photos on this one is actually just fine for its price. Not the best one that you can see but this one got some features including HDR and manual controls.

Verdict

 cherry-mobile-alpha-prime-15

Ok, there are a lot of choices for a tablet or a smartphone with a more affordable price and a more capable software and hardware. So who is this phablet for? Well, if you’re looking for a Windows 10 Mobile tablet that you want to try and test out then you might want to take a look at this. This one is really affordable but remember that this one only runs apps and games available on the Windows App Store.

Samsung to discontinue the Galaxy Note 7

0

Samsung recently recalled the Galaxy Note7 but the bad luck doesn’t stop there as there are reports of replaced Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones still exploding. Yes, the Galaxy Note7 is now discontinued and it’s not a good sign for Samsung as the company is projected to loss $17 billion from its value.

We love the design and the power of the Samsung Galaxy Note7 however, even the replaced Samsung Galaxy Note7 are now not safe. Well, it might be unfortunate for us consumers and Galaxy fans but I’m pretty sure that other brands are happy right now and will probably take advantage as the king of Android smartphones has now fallen.

Sharp made an almost Bezel-less Curved Display and it looks amazing

0

Looks like Sharp showed us what the future of smartphones would look like. Yes, this is a working device from Sharp and it looks damn incredible. Yes, it’s working and it uses the the Free-Form display technology which is a technology made by the company which enables the IGZO LCD panels to have different shapes.

.

“>dsc00416-0

This 5.2-inch 1080p panel really has an actual curves and the bezels are really minimized on this one. This concept display is called Corner R and I’m really excited to see this tech in the future.
