Nokia Asha 306 with SmartNet Review: A Smartphone wannabe

0

P2010755

Here’s a phone that I got last December during the Smart iPhone 5 launch. The Nokia Asha 306 is just one of the few Asha phones that are already available in the Philippines right now. It is currently available at Smart too. The one that I got has SmartNet inside. An app, made for Smart subscribers. It features a very affordable price tag but with some features that can be found on Smartphones, which was one of the main selling points of the Asha, phones.  The Nokia Asha 306 S40 OS is different from the Asha phones that we’ve reviewed before. We’ll discuss that topic later in this review. Do you want to know what’s hot and not about this phone? Check it out after the break by clicking read more!

Hardware

One of the reasons why I love Nokia are the phone designs. One of the phones that was designed uniquely by Nokia was the N9. The Lumia phones that we have today are still inspired by the bright colors and unibody polycarbonate body of the Nokia N9. On their affordable phones, Nokia never fail to impress me with their hardware designs. The designs are solid. They are really sturdy and you know it’s not cheap thanks to the aluminum back covers or sturdy plastic back covers on some of their affordable feature phones.

The Nokia Asha 306 features an Aluminum looking plastic back cover while having a chrome accents on the top and the bottom of the phone. It looks nice. Reminds me of the Nokia N8 that was their former flagship phone. Just like any other Nokia phones, the ports can be found on the top of the phone.

The screen size of the phone is already acceptable to most Filipino hands but I was disappointed to know that the phone uses a resistive touch screen and not the capacitive one. The resistive touch screen phones are not really sensitive to fingertips and they are made from plastic, which is more prone to scratches than the capacitive. If you’re coming from a phone with a capacitive touch screen like the iPhone, Galaxy phones and most Android phones. You might find the Nokia Asha 306 harder to type on because the resistive screen of this phone will require you to use your nails or your finger tips but with more pressure than the normal capacitive screens. The resistive touch screen of the phone might just be one of the deal breakers here.

Like what I’ve said earlier, the connectivities of the phone can be found on the top. There’s the proprietary charger, Micro USB slot and the 3.5 mm audio jack. I got no complains on that. You can even charge the phone using the Micro USB. That’s pretty nice because I don’t want to add another charger on my bag. Micro USB slots are mostly use on Android phones today.

On the Back, you can found the 2 MP camera of the phone. And no, there’s no front camera for your vanity. Sorry girls. There’s no LED flash because this is just one of the affordable feature phones in the market and I don’t think most people with this phone would use their phones for capturing images at low light.

This phone isn’t dual-sim. The Nokia Asha 306 is only a Single-Sim phone but the one thing that I like about this compared to the other Nokia Asha phones is that the phone has a hot-swappable MicroSD card. It means that you can remove your MicroSD card even without turning off and removing the battery of the phone.

Another deal breaker on this phone is the lack of 3G. So if you’re into checking out different websites then you might have a problem. But the Social app, which is a Twitter and Facebook client of the phone, is quite good even on EDGE (2.5G). We’ll talk about the apps and software experience later on. I think they removed the 3G connectivity on this phone since some people doesn’t browse on their phone and they just rely on Wi-Fi and I think they didn’t include a 3G chip inside to lessen the cost of the phone.

The speaker is average. The sound quality is clear but not that loud compared to other Asha phones. The battery? It was good. It doesn’t have an OS that can drain your battery in just a day. The battery life of the phone can last up to more than 2 days on average use. Not bad.

Camera

The Nokia 306 packs a 2.0 megapixel camera and there’s no LED flash. The camera app on the phone lacks a lot of features but it isn’t hard to use. The quality of the camera is somewhat disappointing.  This might be an affordable phone but Nokia should’ve done something to improve it more. The colors are good but there is too much noise on the pictures. Even at sufficient light, the camera of the phone fails to impress me. Here, take a look on the sample photos that I took using the Nokia Asha 306.

The video recording was very disappointing too. The Nokia Asha 306 doesn’t even manage to have a 320 x 240 recording. The Nokia Asha 306 can only record a video at 176×144. Don’t ask me about the quality. The resolution of the video could already tell you the quality of it.
Software

If you’ve used a Nokia Asha before you might notice some minor changes in it. The transitions and the effects are more noticeable. Like what I’ve said earlier, the Nokia Asha 306 looks like and acts like a Nokia N9. From the lock screen to the swiping of homescreens. There are three homescreens on the Nokia Asha 306. There’s the App selection, the media and the good ol’ home screen. You can change and add different shortcuts and contacts on the old homescreen but I never used that.  On the Media homescreen, you can change it to radio, media player or a dialer.  The squarecircle icons are still here.  The app selection is still filled with apps that you can find on the Nokia Asha. Only some of them are useful.

There are a lot of aesthetic changes on the phone but the resistive screen is ruining that improved experience. The elements of the phone are mostly change. If you are a Nokia Asha user before, you might be surprise with its new UI.  Even the Social App on the Nokia Asha 306 has changed. You might hate it because it lacks a lot features but this one is way faster than the old one. Another thing that I like in here is the drop down notifications. Freakin useful.

There’s the Nokia Browser that can only connect using the mobile data, which is on EDGE only. If you want to browse the Internet using Wi-Fi then you must download a 3rd party browser like Opera Mini. Oh and speaking of apps, there are a lot of free EA games on the phone. Yes. A LOT.

Verdict

The Nokia Asha 306 wants to show you that featurephones can act like a Smartphone but this phone still lacks a lot of things and it still needs more improvement to become a smartphone but the revamped Asha OS/S40 OS was great. A lot of elements were changed for good but the resistive screen ruined its experience. The Nokia Asha 306 is available at the Smart Online Store at Plan 500 or you can buy it unlock for P4,250.

Cherry Mobile Titan TV Pictures from CM North EDSA Page

Smartphones are getting bigger and bigger these days. Cherry Mobile, who brought us the gigantic 5.2-inch Omega and 5.0-inch Titan will now bring the 6.0-inch Titan TV! Holy macaroni of seven sheeps! To give you an idea about the competition, the Samsung Galaxy Note II has a 5.5-inch while the LG Optimus VU has a 5.0″ screen. The Cherry Mobile Titan TV is bigger than that. But you might be disappointed with its resolution. The Cherry Mobile Titan TV has a WVGA (800×600) resolution. They should’ve at least made it to 1024×600 which is the resolution of the Samsung Galaxy Tab and most cheap 7″ tablets. From the name itself, the phone has an antenna which can also be used as a stylus. It’s kinda complicated but Mr. Randolph of Pinoy ScreenCast demoed it on the Big Time Show. Want to know more about the Cherry Mobile Titan TV? Check it out after the break.

Karbonn A30/Cherry Mobile Titan TV

According to Mr. Randolph, the camera of the Titan TV fared well on his test. It can record and play 720p videos already. The signal reception of the Analog TV was quite good too. And don’t worry about the Stylus/Antenna, there’s a flip cover that can hold that for you. The combination of the Dual-Core processor and the 1 GB of RAM can also be felt on the Titan TV. Thanks to the 1 GB of RAM, the phone became smoother. The only problem that you might encounter with the Cherry Mobile Titan TV is the super duper gigantic screen. It would be very very awkward to answer a call when you’re using the phone unless you have a headphones/earphones on your pocket. But base on the white paper, I think you’ll love this phone. Check out the specifications of the Cherry Mobile Titan TV here:

Sony Playstation 4 announcement on February 20?

Screen Shot 2013 02 03 at 3.44.16 PM

Sony is teasing us of what seems to be the next iteration of the Playstation. They didn’t announced or showed anything on the video except those Playstation buttons but I’m pretty sure that this will be the next generation Playstation. Why? The Playstation 3 is getting old and it needs a replacement. Remember the Playstation Orbis rumour before? I think things are shaping up and we might see the next generation of the Playstation. According to rumours, the next Sony Playstation might also be powered by AMD processors which means that the Playstation 3 backwards compatibility won’t be seen on the Orbis a.k.a Playstation 4/PS4. Do you want to see the video? Check it out after the break.

Like what I’ve earlier, there aren’t that much details except the #Playstation2013 and the Playstation buttons. I hope that Sony can pull this off successfully. I remember when the Playstation 3 was launch, the SRP of it was $600. Let’s hope that this won’t happen again because if the next generation Playstation would be expensive again. I doubt that it can manage to overtake the Wii U and the next Xbox 720 or whatever Microsoft decided to call it.

Sun Cellular’s Name Ur Number Sim: Choose your own number!

Sun Cellular
Sun Cellular
Maja Salvador and Solenn Heussaff for Sun Cellular

Sun invited us over at one of their stores and they just unveiled some of their products this year. One of their exciting products for this year is the Name ur Number Prepaid Sim. This is just one of their exciting products this year aside from having Solenn Heussaff as their newest Brand Ambassador. I know Solenn is too hot but let’s talk about the Name ur Number Sim from Sun. We all know that they’ve introduced the unlimited texting and calling before and now, It’s another first from Sun Cellular. So what’s up with this thing? Check it out after the break

From the name itself, the Name Ur Number Sim lets you choose your own number. And no, you don’t need a postpaid plan for that. All you need is P59 and commute to the nearest Sun shop out there. And then once you inserted your Name Ur Number Sim on your phone, you can choose any number that you want as long as the number is available.
You can choose the last 6 digits of your number but you either have to choose if you want a 0942 or 0943 and then followed 8 or 9. Be it 0943-9-SO-POGI, 0942-8-I-KIKAY or 0943-8-INLOVE. The Name ur Number Sim also comes with 200 Sun Texts, 200 texts to other networks and 70 minutes of Sun Calls. All that for P59. If you’re planning on getting one then better hurry up because someone else might have your chosen number. And I also heard that the name ur Number Sim sells like hotcake.

Blackberry Z10 and Q10 Unveiled

0
Blackberry Z10 and Q10
Blackberry Z10 and Q10
Blackberry Z10 and the Blackberry Q10

After the long wait, the Blackberry Z10 and the Blackberry Q10 has finally been unveiled. I got the chance to attend the launch party here in the Philippines at Makati but I didn’t stayed there until the end of the livestream. Blackberry announced 2 devices at the launch of the Blackberry 10 OS. They unveiled the Blackberry Z10 which is a full touch device and the Blackberry Q10 which is a QWERTY Device with a square touch-screen which is kinda unorthodox. Want to know more about the devices? Check it out after the break.

Blackberry was known for having devices with a nice QWERTY keyboard. I thought they’ll ditch it in favor of on-screen keyboard. Instead, they included both the QWERTY and the touch screen on the Blackberry Q10. Nice move Blackberry. Some people still want to have a physical QWERTY on their devices especially on devices like Blackberry which are made for messaging.

The Blackberry Q10 is the device for the people who still want a physical keyboard on their device. It has a touchscreen 3.1-inch 720×720 display which is very odd. There’s the Bold-inspired physical keyboard. It has a dual-core Krait chipset. They should’ve made it a quad-core. It has a steel frame and edge-to-edge glass on the front.

The Blackberry Z10 is their newest flagship phone. It has a 4.2-inch 1280×768 display. Not bad at all. There’s a 8-megapixel camera which is enough for your multimedia needs. There’s the microSD SD slot and 16 GB Storage just like the Q10. And yeah. The Q10 and the Z10 are pretty much similar in terms of specs

The question still remains for Blackberry. Can it bring back Blackberry back to its former glory?

iPad now comes in 128 GB

0
iPad 128 GB
iPad 128 GB

So you want to replace your laptop with a brand new, sparkling and shiny iPad? If you are not opting for an iPad just because of the low storage then worry no more because the new iPad 128 GB is here! Yep, a brand new iPad 128 GB is coming to empty out your pockets filled with kachings kachings $$$. I still wonder why Apple can’t wait for the refresh of the iPad before upgrading the memory. Not to mention, the entry level Macbook Air is still at 64 GB. But of course, the iPad doesn’t have a 128 GB in real life. They’ll trim a little bit of that big storage. Want to know the price of the 128 GB? Check it out after the break.

The iPad 128 GB is priced at $799 and $929 for the Wi-Fi version and the cellular version respectively which is quite pricey. It isn’t available yet in the Philippines but when it arrives here, my guess estimate is at P38,000 and P44,000. If you are the type of guy who loves to install a lot of apps and if you are a movie junkie then I recommend you to buy this one. It is expected to arrive in the US stores this February 5. I don’t why they made a bold move like this. Maybe they just want to increase those dwindling stocks. Oh and if you didn’t know yet, Apple has lose its title of being the most valuable company in the world. Poor Apple.

Cherry Mobile Omega Specifications and Price: The Biggest and Meanest Cherry Mobile Android phone

0

Here’s the phone that every Cherry Mobile fan have been waiting for. The Cherry Mobile Omega is here! They finally revealed the Jelly Bean powered Android Smartphone after they teased us for some time. So what can we expect on this phone? It has a pretty large screen that can catch up with most phablets out there but do remember that this phone doesn’t have a HD screen. Just a WVGA (800×480). But why in the world would you expect a large resolution on this phone? This phone will be available at a very affordable price. The Cherry Mobile Omega also packs a dual-core just like the other Android phones of Cherry Mobile. Want to know more about the Cherry Mobile Omega? Click read more for more information.

I haven’t tried this phone yet but by just looking into the picture and the screen size, this phone would be very gigantic. Its screen size can match up with the Samsung Galaxy Note II and most 2013 flagship phone since they are expected to sport 1080p 5-inch screens. The other thing that I like about this phone is that Jelly Bean powers the phone. I love Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It’s faster than the old Android versions.

Some people say that 5-inch phones are too big. I have to disagree. It would still depend on the person who’ll use the smartphone. And in my opinion, larger screens are much better for browsing the web and playing games. And speaking of games, this phone packs a dual-core processor which is already enough to play the latest games on the Play Store without a hitch.

There’s the large 2300 mAh battery too which I think can suffice more than a day of battery life. There’s a 5 Megapixel Rear camera and a VGA front camera that can be use for Skype. And just like its brothers, the phone will have a 512 MB RAM and a 4 GB internal memory. Don’t worry guys, you can put a MicroSD that can support up to 32 GB. And yes, there’s Dual-Sim on the phone too. Awesome right?

Temple Run 2 is now available on Android!

Temple Run 2
Temple Run 2

If you have an Android device or an iOS device, I’m pretty sure that you’ve downloaded Temple Run if your device can run it. If you don’t have a capable device, well, I think you’ve played it on your friend’s device. This is one of the most popular games created for mobile devices. I remember when this game was release in Android, I got addicted to it on my Samsung Galaxy Tab. I played that game for hours but I still suck at that game. Anyway, Imangi Studios released Temple Run 2 almost a week ago on iOS and then they promised that they’ll release Temple Run 2 for Android a week after. And here it is as promised. It is now available on Android and as expected, it has a much better graphics. It’s fast and I didn’t experience any lags on my Samsung Galaxy S3. Want to download it on your Android device? Check out the link after the break.

There’s only one problem on the Temple Run 2 V1.0 for Android. There’s no exit button on the app so you’ll have to use the home button to exit the game. I didn’t have any issues aside from that but I’m very sure that Imangi Studios will fix that on their next update. So you want to download the Temple Run 2 but you can’t find Temple Run 2 on the Play store? Here, check this link. Not all devices can run Temple Run 2 so better check if your device can run Temple Run 2

Cherry Mobile Cruize Specifications and Price: The affordable Gigantic Smartphone

0

Cherry Mobile doesn’t get tired releasing a lot of Android phones lately. I think they want to release an Android phone every month. And earlier today, they just announced the rumoured Cherry Mobile Cruize (Not the Chevy one!). The Cherry Mobile Cruize is one heck of a monster with a very very very affordable price. Yes, the price of this phone is very near to the Cherry Mobile Flare. This gigantic phone packs a 5.2″ Capacitive touch screen which I think is a WVGA screen. And yes, this is bigger than the Cherry Mobile Titan and very close to the Samsung Galaxy Note. The only thing that I hate about the Cherry Mobile Cruize is that this one uses a Single core Processor. Quite disappointing since most Android phones that was released recently by Cherry Mobile are mostly dual-cores. But if you’re just the type of guy or a gal who just want to play some light games, browse the internet on a gigantic screen, chit chat on Facebook and posting status on Twitter. One thing that you gotta love about this phone is the large battery capacity.  Check out the white paper after the break

The Cherry Mobile Cruize packs a 2500mAh battery which I think can last long even though it has a very large screen thanks to the low resolution and the single core processor. But of course, this is just the specs. A real life tests would prove how long the battery can last. Don’t fret about the processor my friends because the Cherry Mobile Cruize got a Dual-Sim, 5 megapixel camera and a VGA front camera, 4 GB of storage with MicroSD slot, 3G and it is powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Not bad. So if you’re the type of person who just wants to have a larger screen and doesn’t care about the processing power of the phone then you might want to check this phone out because this one is a very affordable device for P4,499. Not bad Cherry Mobile. I wish you could release a Quad-Core processor phone this year.

Smart LTE is now available at Plan 1299!

Screen Shot 2013 01 20 at 10.02.10 AM

Good news! LTE now comes in a new more affordable Plan 1299! The announcement of LTE was one of the most exciting tech news last year. Both Globe and Smart announced and launched their LTE services last year. For those people who doesn’t know how LTE can affect your boring internet lives, the Smart LTE can theoretically bring up to 42 mbps of internet wirelessly in some spots in Metro Manila. In real life tests, the speeds that you can mostly get with LTE is at around 20-40 mbps. Not bad at all. I believe that is 4x-20x faster than your most wired internet connection at home. But of course this service comes with a data cap. If you love to download movies, games or whatever large files you have there to download. Then I recommend that you just use your wired connection. Anyway, do you want to know more about the Smart LTE Plan 1299? Check out the details after the break

Cheaper plans comes with smaller data caps. If you just love to have a fast internet and you don’t surf that much and download too much then you might want to choose the Plan 1299. Here’s the plan details:

The Smart LTE modem comes free so you don’t have to worry about that one time payment. I feel that the 5 GB of data per month is too small but if you’re just into checking your E-mails, Twitter and Facebook then this would be great for you. Since this is an affordable plan, this plan would be great for students too. Oh and before you get a Smart LTE plan, Be sure to check your area if you’re covered with LTE.

Want to know more? Check out the Smart LTE here.
