Playstation 3 Super Slim coming soon?

0

So you’re thinking of buying a brand new PS3 slim? Nah, you might change your mind when you see this. And yes, there are leaked online photos of what seems to be the next Playstation 3. This Playstation 3 is slimmer than the slim version and they might call this console as the Playstation 3 Super Slim. The slimmer and sleeker Playstation will still have the same ports and Wi-Fi. So what are the variants available for the Playstation 3? Well the Playstation 3 Super Slim will have a 16 GB, 250 GB and 500 GB variants. Yeah, that’s 16 GB. I guess they’re really planning to have a very affordable Playstation 3 console to match up with the affordable Xbox 360 4 GB version. We’re not sure yet about when will the console be launch and how much would it be available. But hey, it’s pretty nice to see a more affordable Playstation 3 in the market (Well, I really hope that it will be more affordable).

Obviously, the model name is CECH-4011

Samsung Galaxy S3 (Globe) Review: The best of the rest

0

One of the most awaited phone this year and probably the best android phone available in the market, the Samsung Galaxy S3. It is the latest flagship phone from Samsung that sports an eye popping specifications and performance. This phone was officially launched last May but Globe had their own launching last June 1 at Mind Museum in Taguig in which I won the phone thru the raffle. (Oh yeah, you can check out my post about the launch here) Hurray! Check out the review after the break.

Hardware and construction

Designed for humans

At the first glance, you might think that Samsung didn’t take design that serious and they just made the phone too simple. The Samsung Galaxy S3 kinda reminds me of the original Samsung Galaxy S because of its curvy design. Samsung is really serious about the “designed for humans” marketing (sorry aliens!). When you look at the phone’s white paper, some people might refuse to buy this phone because of the large 4.8″ screen but hey, I felt that the phone is very comfortable to hold than its predecessor, Samsung Galaxy S2. Why? Because of the thin profile and the curvy body of the Samsung Galaxy S3. So yeah, Samsung really designed the phone for humans. Not for aliens. Not for chickens. Not for cows but for humans.

The Specifications

Here is the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S3. And yes, It has a pretty amazing hardware.

  • Quad Core 1.4 Ghz Exynos CPU
  • 4.8″ Super AMOLED HD display 1280 x 720
  • 16/32/64 GB Storage and MicroSD up to 64GB
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 8 Megapixel Rear Camera w/ 1080p video recording
  • 1.9 Megapixel Front Camera w/ 720p video recording
  • 2,100Mah Battery
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • HSPA+

What’s inside the Box?

Yeah, the phone is pretty big but it just fit right in my hand. I must say that Samsung did a job well done in terms on its body. The looks isn’t as pretty as the Samsung Galaxy S2 and HTC One X but they really made a good job on designing the phone for easy grip on not-so-big hands.

At the top of the phone is the 3.5mm audio jack and a microphone. At the left side, you can find the Lock/Unlock/Power button and if you’re looking for a camera button, sorry Samsung didn’t add that one on the Samsung Galaxy S3. On the opposite side is the volume rocker. Nothing special about these things. The sides of the phone is not made out of brushed metal but just plastic but the phone doesn’t feel cheap and it still feels very solid on my hand.

One thing I don’t like about the Samsung Galaxy S3 is the back design and its cover. The design is too simple and it isn’t that attractive because it is made up of pure thin plastic which is very prone to breakage. My Galaxy S3’s back cover already have a crack at the back cover but it’s not that big and visible. I got that crack after the phone slipped on my hand an dropped. I estimated that I dropped the phone at 2 feet high. The Camera, LED Flash and the speaker are aligned to each others with the Samsung logo at the back.

Thank God, the battery can be removed unlike the other phones like the HTC One X and the Lumia 900. You can change your MicroSD card without removing the 2100mAh battery. Yeah, the MicroSD is hot swappable but unfortunately, the Micro Sim suffers a different fate. Yes guys!, you’ll have to cut your sim if you’re still using a regular sim. And no, you can’t change your Micro Sim when the battery is still intact but I doubt that will be a deal breaker for you guys. The speaker can also be found at the back which is quite decent. It isn’t that great nor bad, just a normal speaker that is doing his job well. Nothing special about the speaker. Oh and the battery life?, The phone can last up to a day on regular use but when you’re a heavy user (Mobile Data is always on) like me, I suggest that you get a power bank and use power saving (A pretty cool feature on the S3) most of the time because the phone will just last up to 8-12 hours only.

The only usable internal storage on the phone is 11.35 gb and when you feel that you need some more, there’s a MicroSD card slot up to 64gb at the back. I put my music and videos to the MicroSD while the apps and games are on the internal storage.

The 4 sides of the Samsung Galaxy S3

The Display

The 4.8″ Super AMOLED HD Screen is one of the best features of the Samsung Galaxy S3. It’s very big and it produce great colors. The sunlight legibility of the phone is good but I think the Nokia Lumia 800 does better on the sunlight legibility. But hey, the Super AMOLED HD still beats the Nokia Lumia 800’s Clearblack AMOLED Display when it comes to colors. The display is very crisp and I really like how little the pixels are.

The Camera

Samsung Galaxy S3 is equipped with a 8 megapixel rear camera while there’s a 1.9 Megapixel front camera. The 8 megapixel is quite nice but I was quite disappointed with Samsung because they didn’t made it to a 12 megapixel camera. Anyway, those are just numbers, the important thing is that the phone will have a much better sensor and picture quality. Anyway, the phone can capture images with no lags and you can even use burst shot. There’s a feature called Best shot in where the phone chooses the best photo on the 8 photos that you got in burst shot. I think it’s a great feature especially for those people who want to have stolen shots hehe. Here are some shots from the Samsung Galaxy S3:

Here’s a HD video sample of the Samsung Galaxy S3:

The Software and Performance

Inspired by Nature

The Samsung Galaxy S3’s tagline is “Designed for Humans, Inspired by Nature. It is really inspired by nature. The new Touchwiz UI is entirely inspired by nature. The wallpapers are all from nature and the lock screen is like touching a clear water. And yeah, I really want to play with that most of the time. Oh and the Samsung Galaxy S3 is available in 2 colors — Marble White and Pebble Blue. Yeah, even the colors was inspired by Nature. Honestly, at first I really didn’t like that Samsung used the inspired by nature thing but after I tried and used the phone for weeks, well yeah. I think they made a good job on that one. Thanks to the quad core processor of the Samsung Galaxy S3, navigating and swiping transitions on the phone is fast. Oh and we’re not on Jelly Bean yet! Surely, when Jelly Bean arrives, there will be a much faster and silky smooth experience on the phone.

Pop-up Play
For those people who loves to multi-task might find this feature very useful. So if you’re watching Game of thrones and you want to play Temple run or any app that you want to open. No problemo! Because with pop up play, you can watch a video while browsing the web or playing a game. And no, I didn’t experience slowdowns or crashes whenever I use the Pop-up play.

Direct Call

There are a lot of cool new features on the Samsung Galaxy S3 and here’s just one thing that you might like. Direct call is pretty feature exclusive to the Galaxy S3. Basically, when you’re on the contact info or on the threaded text message of the phone, you just need to place the phone on your ear without pressing any key and automatically, the phone will call to that contact. It works 90% of the time.

S Voice and Voice Commands

When the iPhone 4S was launched, one of its notable features of it is Siri so Samsung created their own version of Siri called S Voice. The S voice is base on Vlingo which I think can be found on the Predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S2. The thing that I like in the S voice is that it can recognize my Batangueno/Tagalog accent but I felt that talking to Siri is much better than talking to the S voice. But hey, I can still command the S voice to send a message for me, set an alarm and many more.

Oh and aside from that, I can also command my Samsung Galaxy S3 to play a music, unlock and open the camera on the lock screen by just placing setting up a wake up command for that. Oh and when you’re on your music player, you can change the music or set the volume down by just saying “next” or “volume up/volume down”

Smart Stay
Smart Stay is just one of the Smart features of the Samsung Galaxy S3. So what does this feature do? Well, the Smart stay can detect your eye whether you’re looking at it or not. And if you’re not looking on the phone, there will be an “eye” icon on the notification bar at the top and the phone automatically dim its brightness. A nifty feature of Samsung Galaxy S3 if you want to save more battery. This feature works most of the time. OH! and Smart stay won’t work if you’re on a low light environment.

Some other cool stuffs

For those people who didn’t know yet, the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with a free 2 year 48 GB free storage on Dropbox. So all in all, you can get a 50 GB of free cloud storage. You just need to finish some steps or you can just receive an email to activate the free 48 GB storage. But I’m not really a fan of Dropbox because I always use my Skydrive which has 25GB of storage for old users. Too bad, there’s no official app of Skydrive on the Android.

There are also some special motion and gestures that you can use on the phone like placing the palm on the phone while you’re on the music player will automatically pause the music player. There is also a feature called the Smart Alert. So basically Smart alert will notify you about missed calls and messages when you get your phone after placing it down. The phone will vibrate to notify you that you have new messages and other notifications.

The Hands-on

The Verdict
Let me get this straight guys, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is the best Android phone right now. It’s features are really good even though some of them are not really useful in our everyday routine but hey, the 4.8″ HD Super AMOLED display and the quad core processor is a monster. Some people say that this phone is too simple and ugly but I assure guys that once you’ve tried this phone, you might change your outlook with the Samsung Galaxy S3. We don’t have Android 4.1 Jelly bean update yet but surely, Samsung will have a Jelly bean update for the Samsung Galaxy S3 very very soon. So if you want to get one from Globe, it’s available for Plan 1699. It’s available in 2 colors — Marble white and pebble blue

Seriously, this monster phone is really awesome and I want to puke rainbows because of it.

The second encounter: Nokia 808 Pureview Hands-on

0
Hey I just met you and this is crazy!….oh wait, we already met during the Lumianation

Remember the Nokia 808 Pureview? Yeah, we already got a hands-on of the phone a month ago during the Nokia Lumianation launch.  Then a few weeks ago, the media was given a chance to get a hands-on of the Nokia 808 Pureview. So here it is folks, the second round of the Nokia 808 Pureview hands-on! So what can we expect with the Nokia 808 Pureview? Well, the phone got a 4 inch clearblack AMOLED display which can be found on most Nokia smartphones these days like the Nokia Lumia 800 and of course, there’s a 41 megapixel camera inside the phone which is the most striking feature of this phone.

The Hardware

The Nokia 808 Pureview doesn’t feature a groundbreaking design just like the iPhone 4 when it was launched. The Nokia 808 Pureview’s construction reminds me of the first S60 touch screen phone, the Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic. The Pureview is thick especially the upper part on where the sensor and the camera was placed and yes, the bulge at the back is very noticeable but even though the phone is too thick for me, I didn’t experience any problems about handling it.

The body of the Nokia 808 was made of Polycarbonate but this one has a grainy polycarbonate body compared to the smooth polycarbonate body of the Nokia Lumia 800 and 900. No other surprising features on the body. Music lovers gotta love this phone because not only the camera is good but also the loudspeaker. The speaker is very loud and crystal clear.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 side by side with the Nokia 808 Pureview

The 4″ display is kinda disappointing because it is only at nHD 640×360 which is way behind the HD (1280×720) displays and WVGA (800×480) that can be found on most smartphones. Why is it disappointing? Well we can get a very large 38 megapixel picture but we can’t view the picture at a large resolution. Anyway, the good thing about the AMOLED Clearblack display is that its sunlight legibility is good.

Powering this device is a 1400 mAh battery which I think is too small especially when you always use its camera. Inside is a MicroSD card slot and a MicroSim slot. So yeah, you’ll have to cut your Sim Card if you have a regular size sim card. But hey, most smartphones that are available right now are requiring a micro sim like the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The Camera

One thing is for sure, the Nokia 808 Pureview can replace most of your point and shoot cameras but it can’t replace your Micro 4/3 and DSLR cameras. The 41 megapixel camera is the best thing I’ve used so far. When you’re on the Pureview mode which is maxed out at 8 megapixel, you can zoomed in at very very far distances without losing the quality. Yes I mean it, you can zoomed it at a VERY VERY FAR DISTANCE with FULL quality. I’m not a great photographer but hey, the Nokia 808 Pureview is really great! The Nokia 808 Pureview’s 41 megapixel camera is mind blowing!

Check out some pictures that I tooked using the Nokia 808 Pureview:

Oh and guys, check this out. Here’s a 38 megapixel picture taken using the Nokia 808 Pureview

And then here’s the picture at 100% zoom. Pretty impressive right?

The camera can capture images very swiftly. No lags at all. I also noticed that in full resolution, the noise are noticeable at 100% zoom but hey, the camera is still great for a phone. You can also customize most of the settings at image or video mode. Here’s a video that I took using the Nokia 808 Pureview. Check out how far can I zoom this baby.

Awesome. I almost fell to the ground on that video.

The Software

So there’s Symbian Belle inside the Nokia 808 Pureview. Some of you might be disappointed for not having the latest Windows Phone but hey I think that’s a good decision because current Windows Phone 7 users won’t get the Windows Phone 8 update which is lame and Symbian Belle is kinda fast on this phone and I didn’t experience any crashes and lags at all on this phone.

Anyway the phone’s great, I didn’t experience lags at the gallery even when opening large images. Pinching when zooming isn’t that laggy too. Pretty amazing. Nokia really polished the laggines and crashes at Symbian Belle. I was pretty amazed with the Nokia Big Screen which was demoed by Mr. Mike Smith of Nokia Philippines. The phone has just a single core 1.3 Ghz processor but it was able to display full HD and play pictures and videos at full resolution. Too bad, I can’t zoomed in to the images that are displayed on the screen.

The Controls on the Nokia Big screen

The Verdict and the others

So if you are really into mobile photography and some playing media stuffs then you might want this phone. There’s a Nokia store on where you can download apps and games if you’re getting bored. But hey, this phone is made for mobile photography. You can shoot images and videos at a far distance without losing the quality. The 41 megapixel camera is really the big thing here, it can replaced your point and shoot cameras oh and there are available accessories for the Nokia 808 Pureview like the case and the clip for the tripod.

A decent case for the Nokia 808 Pureview with a cover for the camera
The clip for the tripod

All in all the Nokia 808 Pureview is great. It’s like carrying a professional point and shoot camera but can do cellular functions on it. This device is pretty amazing. Check out my second hands-on video of the Nokia 808 Pureview here:

Here are the things that are in box

My reaction after using this phone:

I want one!
Check out the other pictures of the phone:

Nokia Asha 302 Review: Premium QWERTY looks on the budget

0

Smartphones are getting cheaper and cheaper these days but until this day, feature phones are still popular and being bought by most Filipinos especially those who are budget-conscious. Nokia, who is aiming to bring the internet devices to the next billion brings us the affordable S40 phone, the Nokia Asha 302. The phone doesn’t pack an eye popping feature or some mind blowing apps but this phone packs an affordable price with some features that most of us always use.

Hardware and construction

I love Nokia when it comes to design and construction and no, I’m not being biased here but the Nokia Asha 302 is just another proof that the Nokia produces decent phones with sturdy and solid construction. The Nokia Asha 302 is a combination of a plastic and metal body. The phone feels a bit heavy because of the metal back cover and. The metal back cover and the chrome sides also adds the premium feel to the device.

The QWERTY keyboard. Yummy

The QWERTY keyboard is almost the same with the other E series devices. Remember the Nokia E6 that we reviewed last year? Yeah, the Nokia Asha 302 has the same feel and moving from touch to this one was pretty hard. I already got used to touchscreen QWERTY. At the top of the QWERTY keyboard are some buttons that you are very very familiar with and I think I don’t need to elaborate on that one except the two buttons, the shortcut for the contacts and messaging button. Well, you can program it and change the shortcut.

The Nokia Asha 302 has a 2.4″ display and you can’t find a capacitive or resistive touch screen in here. Just a normal TFT LCD with just 256k colors. It’s good to see that the touchscreen isn’t present because of the small screen oh and a touch screen would just add to the battery consumption and to the cost of production of the phone. Oh and did you know that this phone packs a 1 GHz processor. Yes! it isn’t a smartphone but Nokia decided to put a 1 GHz processor on that phone so most apps load here quick but can barely see smooth transitions in here.

At the back of the phone is the 3.2 megapixel camera (no flash and autofocus here! sorry!) and the Nokia Asha 302 can record VGA videos at 15 fps. Just a simple camera for people who are not into photograhy. Inside the back cover is the battery that can last up to 2-3 days on me and when you remove the battery, you can see the regular sim card slot (No Micro-Sim here!. Oh and the memory card?, you can remove it easily on the side of the phone if you feel that you’re phone needs more space from the internal 140MB Storage.

The Sim Card Slot

At the top of the phone is the 3.5mm jack, MicroUSB and the round socket for charger. Too bad you can’t use the Micro USB for charging the phone. The speaker? Well it’s good. It is very loud and clear and I commend the Asha 302 for that. Too bad there’s no speaker control at the side. Anyway, if you want to get connected anytime there’s HSDPA and Wi-Fi on the phone (OH And I can’t connected to our PLDT MyDSL for some unknown reason)

The Micro USB, 3.5mm jack and the charger port

Camera

The 3.2 megapixel camera at the back

I really didn’t expect that much on the camera performance of the Nokia Asha 302 because it is just an affordable phone but the camera of the phone did well. The 3.2 megapixel camera without flash and autofocus isn’t great but it does its job well. Check out the pictures taken using the Nokia Asha 302 below:

Oh and here’s a video of using the phone’s camera:

Not bad for a phone like this but too bad it is limited at 15 fps. Nokia should’ve made it to 30 fps, 15fps is too crappy. We already have 1 GHz processor on the phone and yet, it can’t provide us a decent video framerate

The software

The device is just running the S40 OS. Yep, no S60/Symbian here but the phone is still equip with the good ol S40. But hey, eventhough the phone’s running the S40 OS, it still have some cool apps like Social in which you can connect your facebook, twitter, flickr and orkut accounts. Yep, there’s a built-in social networking app on the Nokia Asha 302.

For people who loves to check out apps, there is a built-in Nokia store. Yep, you can buy and download apps and games compatible for the Nokia Asha 302. There are a lot cool apps and games that you can find there. Don’t worry about games on the Nokia Asha 302 because there are pre-loaded games and some demo games that you can play in it.

The built-in browser on the Nokia Asha 302 is the Nokia browser. The browser acts like the Opera mini and looks like the Opera Mini. It also compress the images and webpages so that it will consumer less data (Great for those people who are on a limited data plan). There’s nothing special about it aside from the Opera Mini-like browsing. Other useful apps that are included are Music player and mail. It does their job well. No problems at all.

The Feel

Honestly, I’m not a fan of phones with QWERTY keyboards. I already got used to phones with on-screen pads ever since I switched to Samsung Omnia. Yes, the original Omnia powered by Windows Mobile 6.x. Like what I’ve said before, I really the design and construction of the Nokia Asha 302. Even though the phone is a bit heavy for its size, the back cover and the chrome-y sides looks good and premium.  Too bad there’s no S60 or Symbian Belle in here (And yes, the Symbian Belle was doing good and there are less crashes).

VERDICT
After using the phone for some time. I think the phone’s great when you’re looking for a phone with a QWERTY keyboard and just use it for texting, messaging & social networking. I really like the premium feel of the phone and I think it’ll be also a great secondary phone (If you already have a cool smartphone around). If you want to get a Nokia Asha 302 then check out the nearest Nokia stores around. The phone will be available in Dark Grey, White, Plum Red and Mid Blue colors. The SRP of the phone is P5,290.

0
The Sony NEX-F3 in black!

Mirrorless cameras are getting popular these days and Sony is one of the know manufacturers of the mirrorless cameras. So what’s up with these mirrorless cameras? Basically, they’re thinner and more portable than the current DSLRs that we have in the market BUT that doesn’t mean that the mirrorless cameras suck big time. Actually, the mirrorless cameras are waaaaay better than the point and shoots and sometimes mirrorless cameras are on par with the current DSLRs. So what’s the downside of the Mirrorless cameras?
