Xiaomi got the upper hand as a federal judge in Washington blocked the Defense Department from restricting U.S. investment in Xiaomi Corp.
In case you missed it, the Trump administration placed the Chinese mobile maker in their list of alleged companies linked to the Chinese military. With this, it initially planned to restrict U.S. investment in the smartphone manufacturer, which is supposed to be effective starting next week.
However, last Friday, U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras temporarily stopped the ban, claiming that the move was “arbitrary and capricious” as it lacked due process.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi announced that it will continue its request to the court to declare the labeling of its alleged linking to the military as unlawful.
They also hope that the government will remove the restriction permanently.
READ THE FULL STATEMENT HERE:
“Xiaomi is pleased to see that on March 12, EST, the court enjoined DOD from implementing or enforcing the designation of Xiaomi as a CCMC. Pursuant to the injunctive relief granted, the Court removed, in full and with immediate effect, the Executive Order 13959 restriction on U.S. persons to purchase Xiaomi’s securities and the requirement on U.S. persons to divest their holdings.
Xiaomi reiterates that it is a widely held, publicly traded, independently managed corporation that offers consumer electronics products solely for civilian and commercial use.
Xiaomi believes that the decisions of designating it as a Chinese Communist Military Company are arbitrary and capricious, and the judge agrees with it. Xiaomi plans to continue to request that the court declare the designation unlawful and to permanently remove the designation.
Xiaomi is a young and energetic technology company. Over the years, we have offered amazing consumer electronics products such as smartphones and smart TVs with honest prices to consumers all over the world. We are committed to working with our global partners to let everyone in the world enjoy a better life through innovative technology.”

The Xiaomi Mi 11 has already sold out in the Philippines just a few hours after its release. The Mi 11 is the latest flagship smartphone of the company and it features amazing features including a Snapdragon 888 chipset and also a 108MP rear camera.
Aside from that, the smartphone also packs some features that content creators would definitely love including movie magic. The smartphone can also record at 8K@30fps unlike other smartphones.
This year, not only flagship smartphones will get a 5G treatment. Even the mid-range ones are getting 5G too like the Samsung Galaxy 42. The Samsung Galaxy A42 is one of the most interesting under the A-series not just because of the design but also because of the specs inside as this one comes with a mid-range Snapdragon 750 processor inside that supports 5G.
Pretty design
Just like the other A-series smartphones of Samsung, this won’t have the same premium build of the S-series or the Note-series smartphones but the Samsung Galaxy A42 does have a stylish design at the back with a gradient levels at the back. There’s a rainbow hue too at the back depending on the angle and it’s just pretty to the eyes.
The back is made up of plastic which makes the body light and the curves at the back makes the Samsung Galaxy A42 5G really ergonomic to the hands. The body is thin too so despite having a large 6.6” Super AMOLED display on the smartphone, it’s still easy and comfortable to the hands.
On the right, we got here the power button and the volume rocker and below, there’s the USB-C port that supports up to 15W of Fast-Charging only and thankfully, they have an in-display fingerprint scanner for this one instead of the side-mounted fingerprint scanner.
Large vivid display
One of its main selling points is that the Samsung Galaxy A42 5G features a large display. It’s actually a 6.6-inch Super AMOLED Display which is more than enough for most people. Having a large display is great for watching videos and playing games but the downside is the resolution – there’s an HD+ resolution on this one that’s why the display is not as crisp as the other Galaxy A smartphones but still, we still got here a Super AMOLED panel which is why the display of the smartphone is vivid, bright, and the blacks are great.
For me, I still enjoyed the display of the smartphone despite the HD+ resolution just because of vividness of the colors of the display of the smartphone. Using it outside was a breeze as it was fine and of course, the display is very bright even under direct sunlight. As for the bezels, it’s noticeable on the smartphone and unlike the other Galaxy A smartphones, we have here a notch instead of the punch-hole camera but it wasn’t an issue for me.
Long battery life
Despite having a slim and light body on the smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy A42 5G features a 5000mAh battery and it might take a while to charge the smartphone with its 15W Fast Charging, the smartphone was able to last up to a day and a half of normal usage. In our PC Mark battery test, we were able to get a score of 15 hours and 15 minutes which is pretty damn good.
Software and performance
The Samsung Galaxy A42 5G runs on One UI 2.5 under Android 10 but don’t worry because the One UI 3.0 update for this one is on the way this year so you’ll be able to experience Android 11 on this smartphone. Personally, I prefer One UI due to the simplicity of the UI and after weeks of usage of the smartphone, I didn’t noticed any lags on this one and it was smooth as ever.
As for the installed apps, there are some apps here that belongs in the Samsung ecosystem including Galaxy Store, Samsung notes and more. Most of them are useful and of course, there are the google apps and also the Microsoft apps preinstalled on the smartphone.
For the performance, the Samsung Galaxy A42 5G features a Snapdragon 750 5G chipset inside. This is the one responsible for having a 5G on this smartphone and then there’s an 8GB RAM along with 128GB of internal storage. Honestly, we did enjoy the performance on the smartphone as it can perform most of the tasks that I need and the temperatures was doing fine on the smartphone. Check out the benchmarks that we run on the smartphone:

Screenshot 20210225 200613 3DMark
Screenshot 20210113 142844 Geekbench 5
Screenshot 20201213 235317 AnTuTu Benchmark
As for the games, we were able to run most modern games but you have to set your expectations a little bit lower than the Snapdragon 765G. We can run games like Genshin Impact and League of Legends: Wild Rift on the smartphone but you have to set it at low to medium settings to get an enjoyable frame rate.
Decent camera
For the camera, the Samsung Galaxy A42 5G features a quad-camera setup with a 48MP primary camera along with the 8MP ultrawide camera and also a 5MP macro camera and a 5MP depth sensor. To be honest with you guys, the only important cameras in here are the 48MP main camera and also the 8MP camera. As for the selfies, we got here a 20MP selfie camera.
The camera of the smartphone was able to reach my expectations. The shots that we got was able to feature a decent colors and the sharpness that I was expecting. The dynamic range of the smartphone was quite good too on both the rear and selfie camera of the smartphone.

At night shots, I noticed that the smartphone can capture photos with a decent brightness but I notice that there’s a big difference when it comes to the quality. It’s not bad actually but you can easily see that it’s softer at night shots.
For videos, the smartphone can record videos up to 4K@30fps at the rear camera of the smartphone and only up to full HD on the selfie camera of the Samsung Galaxy A42 5G.
Verdict
The Samsung Galaxy A42 5G is a decent mid-range 5G smartphone from Samsung. It has the features that we need on a basic smartphone – it’s fast, long battery life, and the camera will do just fine. However, if you’re not a fan of the HD display, you might be disappointed with this one but the Super AMOLED panel just gives us a way to enjoy the vividness in its 6.6-inch display.
The Samsung Galaxy A42 5G is now available at Smart Signature postpaid plans.
