Zenfone 2 ZE551ML vs. iPhone 6 Plus vs. Galaxy S6 Comparison Review

If you love following different tech groups on Facebook then your feed might probably be full of news about the ASUS Zenfone 2 because this smartphone is one of the hottest this year thanks to the 4GB of RAM and its incredible pricing that breaks the barrier of smartphone pricing.

Today, we’re gonna do a comparison review of my 3 phones – The ASUS Zenfone 2 ZE551ML, the iPhone 6 Plus, and of course, the Samsung Galaxy S6. So, what are the things that we’re gonna compare in this smartphones? Well, we’ll compare the design, experience, and camera.

Design

When it comes to hardware, Jony Ive really knows how to design their devices. The design of Apple devices are really good and sometimes, these designs are really a game changer in the industry however in the iPhone 6 Plus, a lot of people think that the design of their new iPhones are meh. Why? because the annoying lines at the back isn’t really good to the eye and the curvy sides makes the phone more uncomfortable to hold. Oh and that bendgate.

While Samsung Galaxy S6 is a big leap from predecessors when it comes to design, it also comes with caveat. So what was it? Well, gone are the glorious days of removable battery and expandable storage and oh, the Galaxy S6’s battery drains faster than the predecessor. The materials used on the Samsung Galaxy S6 are perfect for me. At the sides, you got the metal frame while at the back,  you got a Gorilla Glass 4 protecting the device. That’s why the smartphone feels very premium to me. Compared to the iPhone, the side is flat which makes the smartphone easier to hold however, the smartphone is still slippery.

The ASUS Zenfone 2 still features the similar design of the previous Zenfone series at the front but this time, it now features an arc design at the back which is more handier and easier to hold. The volume button was also placed at the back which is more convenient to many. The back cover features a brushed metal look compared which is made up of plastic compared to the premium material used on the iPhone’s aluminum unibody and Galaxy S6’s glass back. But there’s a one clear advantage of the ASUS Zenfone 2 over those flagships, which is the comfortability and ergonomics. Despite having a 5.5-inch display, the ASUS Zenfone 2 still have almost the same dimensions of the Zenfone 2 but this time, it is more comfortable to hold thanks the arc design and compared to those latter smartphones, the ASUS Zenfone 2 is much easier hold.

Experience

Both the Samsung Galaxy S6 Duos and the ASUS ZenFone 2 runs on a Android 5.0 Lollipop while the iPhone 6 Plus is on iOS 8.3. Despite having both the same operating system on the ASUS ZenFone 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Duos, the experience is very different on those two smartphones. The ASUS ZenFone 2 runs on ZenUI while the Samsung Galaxy S6 Duos runs on TouchWiz UI. But since the ASUS ZenFone 2 ZE551ML packs a 4GB of RAM, the performance on that smartphone is superb and lag-free while the Samsung Galaxy S6 Duos only have a 3GB of RAM, the Zenfone 2 experienced less lags compared to the flagship smartphone especially when multi-tasking but of course, when it comes to heavy use, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Duos can run faster than the Zenfone 2 but don’t worry, ASUS Zenfone 2 can handle any games or applications you throw it in.

While the iPhone 6 Plus might not have a large amount of RAM, the iPhone can handle anything fast and smoothly thanks to the optimization of the iOS 8.3 to the hardware. The iOS app store can also offer more quality and exclusive games than on the Play store. However, there are a lot of limitations on iOS such as customization and for the side of Jack Sparrows out there, it is much easier to install any games on Android compared to iOS.

Camera

The iPhone 6 Plus got an 8-Megapixel Rear camera while the ASUS Zenfone 2 got a 13-Megapixel Pixelmaster camera while the Samsung Galaxy S6 Duos packs a 16-Megapixel Rear Camera. We’ve reviewed all of these smartphones and they’re all pretty damn good when it comes to camera performance.

The iPhone 6 Plus might have an 8-Megapixel camera but every year, Apple kept on improving it which makes the shots on iPhone clearer, better, and sharper. However, Samsung has also improved the camera of the Samsung Galaxy S6 especially in lowlight while ASUS Zenfone 2 proved that you don’t need an expensive smartphone to get an amazing performance in lowlight photography and HDR. You know what, just check out the pictures that I took below.

Photo#1 – ASUS Zenfone 2 is the brightest of them all however the Samsung Galaxy S6 image is more sharper.

The ASUS Zenfone 2 didn’t win in all of those tests but it crushed the iPhone 6 Plus’ camera and it’s really interesting how a sub-P15k smartphone can match those flagships that are priced more than P30k.

Verdict

The iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S6, and the ASUS Zenfone 2 are amazing smartphones. Each smartphones has its own pros and cons but what’s more interesting is that the ASUS Zenfone 2 can match these two flagship smartphones at even half the price.

  1. I have the Galaxy S6 and the Zenfone 2. It’s really not a fair comparison to put the Zenfone 2 against the iPhone 6 or Galaxy S6. The camera on the Zenfone 2 is WAY INFERIOR to the other 2 phones you tested. You used the auto exposure lightness/darkness results as a comparison and that’s not very useful. The images coming out of the Zenfone 2 are blurry and noisy compared to what the Galaxy S6 can do. Like another commenter said, post some 100% crops and you’ll see that the S6 outshines the other 2. The auto exposure settings on the S6 usually do a good job, but at least if they don’t, you’ve got something to work with and can touch it up without getting a blurry mess.

As far as speed, the Zenfone 2 may have more RAM, but it the S6 runs about twice as fast (testing my own imaging app). Any lags are due to Samsung loading too many background services and gesture detectors. I disabled most of the Samsung cruft and the phone is quite fast.

For a mid-tier phone, the Zenfone 2 is a good value, but the camera, display, build quality, and support are inferior to the other 2 phones you tested. You get what you pay for.

One last comment – I bought the Zenfone2 for software testing x86_64 native code. Well it turns out that it does run Android 5.0, but currently has 64-bit app support disabled. Asus support has told me that it will be fixed in a future update. So…Asus is not being truthful when it boasts about being a 64-bit phone since at the moment it only runs 32-bit apps.
