If you grew up playing Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour, there’s some great news for you. A new open-source project has made the classic RTS playable natively on Apple Silicon Macs, iPhones, and iPads and this is running natively without relying on emulators or cloud streaming.

The Classic RTS Finally Comes to Apple’s Ecosystem
The project is based on EA’s GPL-released source code through the community-driven GeneralsX project. Rather than emulating Windows, it compiles the original game engine directly for ARM64 processors found in modern Apple devices.
According to the developer, the game supports:
- Full Campaign mode
- Skirmish battles
- Generals Challenge
- Save functionality
- Music, voice lines, FMVs, and sound effects
- Native touch controls designed specifically for iPhone and iPad

No Emulator Required
One of the biggest highlights is that this isn’t running through traditional emulation. Instead, the original DirectX 8 renderer is translated through a modern graphics stack. This allows the original 2003 game engine to run natively on Apple hardware while preserving the original gameplay.
You’ll Still Need to Own the Game
Before getting too excited, there’s one important catch. The repository does not include any game assets. Players must legally own Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour, and the included setup tools extract the necessary files from their own copy of the game.
If you’d like to install the port yourself, you can follow the official setup instructions on GitHub here: Generals-Mac-iOS-iPad GitHub repository and installation guide
