EU warns Apple not to limit performance of uncertified USB-C cables

0

Apple is expected to switch from its proprietary Lightning port to a USB-C port on its upcoming iPhone 15 models. While the tech giant has until December 2024 to comply with the EU legislation that requires devices with wired charging to have a USB-C port, reports suggest that Apple will make the change sooner rather than later.

According to recent rumors, Apple will include an authentication chip in the USB-C port on the iPhone 15 models. This chip will confirm the authenticity of the USB-C cable connected. Then, those “Made for iPhone”/MFi-certified chargers will have optimized fast charging performance. This raised concerns among consumers and industry watchers.

EU to Apple: No, you can’t limit the performance of uncertified USB-C cables

The European Commission has warned Apple that such actions would not be permitted. Reports also said that would prevent iPhones from being sold in the EU when the law goes into effect. The EU aims to publish a guide to ensure a “uniform interpretation” of the legislation by Q3 2023. This came as no surprise as it seeks to ensure consumer choice in the third-party accessory market.

If Apple moves forward with the alleged plan to limit the functionality of uncertified USB-C cables, it could have significant implications for the third-party accessory market. Consumers may face limited options and higher prices. It could also create further barriers for small accessory makers entering the market.

The EU’s warning to Apple is a reminder that companies must adhere to legislation and regulations set forth by governing bodies. It also highlights the importance of promoting an open and competitive market for consumers, including allowing third-party accessories to function properly with devices.

In the past, Apple’s proprietary Lightning port has been a source of frustration for consumers and third-party accessory makers alike. The move to USB-C will bring greater standardization and compatibility across devices. However, we’re yet to discover how Apple will handle the transition and its impact on the third-party accessory market.

vivo V27 5G Review

0

vivo ‘s most popular and marketed smartphone is the V-series as this one balances out the needs of most Filipino consumers – a premium and stylish smartphone that isn’t on a flagship price. So how does the vivo V27 5G fare? Well, check it out in our review.

vivo V G Philippines

Design and hardware

vivo V G Philippines

One of the things to love about the vivo V series every time they release is their design. The design of the vivo V27 5G didn’t fail to amaze us as not only we have here a sexy and unique materials but the smartphone also packs a very ergonomic design that is easy to hold and grip.

vivo V G Philippines

Going to the design of the smartphone, it’s thin and it’s light. At the back, we got here the emerald green color for our review unit and it changes color to a darker shade whenever it’s under direct sunlight – a feat that we’ve seen on previous vivo V series smartphones.

vivo V G Philippines

At the back, we can also see the large camera module of the smartphone that houses the triple camera lens and also the Aura Portrait Light that the brand is really proud of. On the right, there’s the power button and also the volume rocker of the smartphone

vivo V G Philippines

No headphone jack in here and the USB-C port below the smartphone does support up to 66W FlashCharge which is fast enough. As for the speaker, it’s a decent one that will do just fine but it’s not as immersive as other smartphones in the market even at its price range.

vivo V G Philippines

Battery and charging

vivo V G Philippines

As for the battery life, the vivo V27 5G comes with a 4600mAh battery. They did sacrifice a little bit of that battery to give you a smaller and thinner body on the smartphone. However, we still got here an excellent battery life as the smartphone clocked in a score of 17 hours and 19 minutes on PC Mark Work 2.0 Battery test which is pretty long for its size.

vivo V G Philippines

As for charging, the smartphone was able to get a full charge in less than 50 minutes from 0 to 100 on the smartphone. This is why charging the smartphone in just a few minutes will already give you a full day of usage already.

Screenshot

Display

vivo V G Philippines

For the display of the vivo V27 5G, it comes with a 6.78-inch Full HD+ display with a curved AMOLED panel. And yes, the colors are great and it’s very usable when using the smartphone outside. The sunlight legibility was great as well.

vivo V G Philippines

Again, the colors are excellent which adds to the premium feel of the smartphone and again, the smartphone is really ergonomic as well big thanks to its curved glass back and of course, the curved 3D Glass on the front.

There’s 120Hz refresh rate as well which is why the smartphone is smooth when navigating along with some selected games on the smartphone.

Software and performance

vivo V G Philippines

Before we get down to the performance of the smartphone, the vivo V27 5G comes with FunTouch OS 13. It’s swift, smooth and it’s easy on the eyes. While there are some apps that comes preinstalled on the smartphone, most of them doesn’t annoy me at all and it’s very user friendly as well.

When it comes to performance, the vivo V27 5G performs greatly thanks to the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 processor of the smartphone along with the 12GB of RAM that can be extended up to 20GB.

vivo V G Philippines

The storage of the smartphone comes with 256GB of internal storage, it’s more than enough for some people. In my usage, I did enjoy the performance of the smartphone because of these things – consistency, power, and thermals.

vivo V G Philippines

When playing games on the smartphone like Genshin Impact, we might not have it at the highest settings possible on the smartphone, but we did have a consistent performance on the smartphone thanks to its thermals.

The smartphone doesn’t heat up that much and it only gets warm even after a while of using the smartphone for gaming. While in Call of Duty, we did experience stutters at first but after downloading the shaders, everything went well and it was smooth at the highest possible settings. IIt delivers a promising performance but again, not on a flagship level. Do check out the benchmarks of the smartphone below:

Camera

vivo V G Philippines

The camera of the vivo V27 5G is the smartphone’s biggest feature. It comes with a 50MP main camera with Sony IMX766V sensor and also an 8MP ultrawide and 2MP macro lens. The front camera of the smartphone is also a 50MP which is great for selfies and also for taking vlogs.

vivo V G Philippines

The smartphone also comes with OIS+EIS but the main star of the show is the Aura Portrait light system on the smartphone. In our shots, we noticed that the Aura Portrait Light tends to have a more natural and a ring-light effect on taking videos or photos on the smartphone.

Noticeably, taking portrait shots at dark is a lot better thanks to the Aura Portrait Light system and as for longer exposure shots, we noticed that the night shots are brighter as well. Despite the upgraded processor, the vivo V27 5G can only record up to 4K@30fps and not 60fps but man, the stabilization on this one was good

Verdict

vivo V G Philippines

Every year, the vivo V series smartphone has surprised us with its camera prowess. It might not be the most powerful everytime but the camera of the smartphone is more than enough for most people. The Dimensity 7200 processor of the smartphone is also decent enough for its power and thermals inside and the battery is something to love. But definitely, the smartphone is not the most powerful out there.

vivo V G Philippines

So if you’re into selfies and that’s your priority on a smartphone then do check out the vivo V27 5G.

How to Play Honkai: Star Rail on Mac (Apple Silicon)

0

Mihoyo, the creators of the popular Honkai: Impact 3rd and Genshin Impact, has just recently launched Honkai: Star Rail. The game is a RPG Gacha video game but unlike their previous games, this one comes with a turn-based combat but Honkai: Star Rail still share some elements from the two games including some mechanics and also their graphics and design.

n
Honkai: Star Rail running on Macbook Pro 14″ M1 Pro

Before you proceed to our guide, be sure that you’re using an Apple Silicon Mac. Playcover works on only M1 CPUs and if you’re still using an Intel Mac, it’s recommended that you install Windows and install the Windows client of the game instead.

Note: This might fall under client modification so use it at your own risk!

  1. Download the latest PlayCover Nightly version here
  2. Install PlayCover and drag it into your Applications folder
    • Screenshot at PM
  3. Open the PlayCover nightly app and click open on the system prompt
  4. Click Install when prompted regarding the installation of Xcode Command Line Tools (This may take some time to install)
    • Screenshot at PM
  5. Authenticate the installation of osascript with Touch ID or password
    • Screenshot at PM
  6. Download an unencrypted Honkai: Star Rail from external sources or from your device. (You can check other external sources here)
  7. Drag the .ipa of Honkai Star Rail and install the .ipa
  8. Right click on the Honkai: Star Rail App and click on settings
  9. Click on the the Bypasses tab and be sure to tick Enable Playchain and click on OK
    • Screenshot at PM
  10. Download the latest keymap here
  11. Right click on the Honkai: Star Rail App again on the PlayCover app and click Import Keymapping and choose the Honkai: Star Rail Keymapping folder
  12. Open and enjoy playing Honkai: Star Rail on your Mac!
    • Screenshot at PM

It’s little bit problematic as this one is an iPad app so the keymapping isn’t perfect unlike the PC Client and you still have to rely on disabling the keymapping sometimes by pressing the option button on your keyboard to navigate on conversations and click thru the puzzles in game.
