iPhone 18 Fold Hands-On: Apple’s Foldable iPhone Could Feel Like a Mini iPad

Share

The iPhone 18 Fold, also rumoured to be called the iPhone 18 Ultra, has not been officially announced. However, we got a dummy unit that gave us an early idea of how Apple’s first foldable iPhone could look and feel.

These non-functional prototype units are typically produced using early dimensions and design information so accessory manufacturers can begin developing cases and other products ahead of a device’s launch. While the final design could still change, this mock-up offers a preview of Apple’s possible approach to a foldable smartphone.

iPhone 18 Fold: A Strange Aspect Ratio That Actually Makes Sense

When folded, the iPhone 18 Fold feels noticeably wider than a regular iPhone. The closest comparison I can think of is the BlackBerry Passport, but without the physical QWERTY keyboard and with a slightly smaller overall footprint.

Despite its wider shape, the device feels compact and solid in the hand. It is also thin for a foldable smartphone just like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. Apple could potentially use some of the engineering and internal design ideas introduced with the iPhone Air, although nothing has been confirmed yet.

iPhone 18 Fold and the iPhone 17 Pro

The wider outer display makes the phone slightly more difficult to hold with one hand compared to a traditional iPhone. Its shorter and broader design feels unusual at first, almost like a smaller iPad mini being used in portrait orientation.

Since this is only a non-functional prototype, we cannot see how iOS would adapt to the unusual screen size. That will ultimately be one of the most important parts of the experience.

Once unfolded, the iPhone 18 Fold immediately feels more like a mini tablet. The closest existing comparison may be the HUAWEI Pura X Max, which also uses a wider foldable design.

Compared with taller foldable phones such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series, the wider inner display feels more practical and natural. It provides more usable horizontal space instead of simply creating an unusually tall screen.

This aspect ratio could also make multitasking much better. Two apps could be opened side by side without either app feeling too narrow or losing too much content.

iPhone 18 Fold: Buttons and USB-C Port

The iPhone 18 Fold dummy unit includes a Camera Control button, with the power button positioned above it. Similar to recent iPhone models, both buttons are large and easy to locate.

However, the volume buttons are positioned along the upper section of the device. The placement does not initially feel natural for a smartphone and makes the iPhone Fold feel more like a tablet.

Thankfully, the device’s shorter and wider body means the volume buttons remain relatively easy to reach.

At the bottom, there is still a USB-C port positioned between the speaker grilles. Based on this mock-up, Apple does not appear to be moving toward a completely portless foldable iPhone just yet.

iPhone 18 Fold: Dual-Camera Design

The iPhone 18 Fold is expected to feature a dual-camera system, giving it more flexibility than a single-camera model such as the iPhone Air.

The dummy also suggests that the foldable iPhone could feature two front-facing cameras. One is positioned near the top centre of the outer display, while another appears in the upper-left corner of the inner foldable screen.

Early Verdict

Based on its size and proportions, the iPhone 18 Fold could offer a promising balance between a compact smartphone and a tablet-like experience.

When folded, it feels small and solid, although its wider body may take some time to get used to. When unfolded, the screen feels much closer to an iPad mini, which could make apps, multitasking and general navigation feel more natural than on taller foldable phones.

Of course, this is still an early physical mock-up rather than a finished retail device. Apple could make significant changes to the dimensions, cameras, buttons and overall design before its first foldable iPhone reaches the market.

Still, this early look suggests that Apple may be focusing less on creating a taller foldable phone and more on delivering a genuinely compact iPad-like experience.
