Samsung Galaxy S20 (Exynos 990) Review

0

Three Samsung Galaxy S20 variants were released earlier this year and the smallest of them all is the Samsung Galaxy S20 but despite being the smallest among the three, this smartphone still packs some power inside as we got here an Exynos 990 processor inside and of course, we still have a killer camera on the smartphone. Want to know more about the smartphone? Check it out below.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Review: Design and hardware

As expected, the design and feel of the Samsung Galaxy S20 is very similar to the Samsung Galaxy S20+ but this is handier and I have better ergonomics because of its size but don’t get fooled with its size, because we still have a pretty large display here at 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2.0. Yep, still pretty big compared to the iPhone 11 Pro. And oh, this isn’t like the S20 Ultra as this one is thin and ergonomic.

The back is made up of glass but the color availability of the smartphone is pretty bland and boring but that doesn’t mean that the smartphone isn’t premium. The glass feels solid and the build quality of the smartphone is just superb which is why I highly suggest that you buy a case for the smartphone if you’re getting one as a drop might break the smartphone’s glass back. Another thing to love about the smartphone is how lightweight it is.

As expected, the Samsung Galaxy S20 will have a protruding camera but unlike the Galaxy S20 Ultra, this one would have a thinner and smaller rectangular camera module at the back since we only got here a triple lens rear camera, unlike the Samsung Galaxy S20+ that has four cameras and the Galaxy S20 Ultra that has a bigger sensor and 100x space zoom.

The Galaxy S20 features a USB-C port and thankfully, there’s the support for 25W fast charging and yes, the smartphone does come with that charger. For those who are expecting a headphone jack in here, the Galaxy S20 doesn’t have that anymore.

The display also houses the in-display fingerprint scanner and it’s as fast as before in my experience but of course, there’s the face unlock if you prefer that which is way faster.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Review: Display

A smaller body means that we’re getting here a smaller display. With the Samsung Galaxy S20, we’re getting here a 6.2-inch display and no, we won’t be getting here a measly Full HD+ display because we’re getting here a QHD+ display paired with a 120Hz refresh rate.

There’s no waterfall display or a curved screen in here but I guess that’s acceptable since we got here an Infinity-O Dynamic AMOLED display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Unfortunately, the smartphone can only enable a 120Hz refresh rate if you’re using the Full HD+ resolution. I guess that they want to conserve the battery of the smartphone.

As expected, the Samsung Galaxy S20’s display is bursting with colors whether you’re just looking at pictures or watching videos on Netflix or YouTube. And yes, it’s excellent even under direct sunlight which makes the smartphone series’ display one of the best in the industry.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Review: Battery Life

Samsung Galaxy S20 on FHD+ 120Hz
Samsung Galaxy S20 on QHD+ 60Hz

Despite having a lightweight and small size, Samsung managed to squeeze in a 4000mAh battery inside. Now, you have to take note that the smartphone that we’re reviewing is the Exynos 990 variant which means that the smartphone has a different power consumption than the one on the US that has a Snapdragon 865 processors.

Not only that, but you should also take note that the Samsung Galaxy S20 is capable of a 120Hz refresh rate which will drain a lot of battery on the smartphone. So we benchmarked the smartphone on both 60Hz QHD+ and also at 120Hz Full HD+ and we found that there’s a big difference between the two. Check it out below

In our normal usage, the smartphone would typically last a whole workday on 60Hz but when you’re using it at 120Hz, do expect that you’ll be asking for a charger or a powerbank before the end of the day.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Review: Software and performance

Some people might disagree with me but the One UI is really fine. On the Samsung Galaxy S20, we’re running on One UI 2.1 that is based on Android 10 and as expected, it will still come with a lot of applications including the ones from Samsung like the Galaxy Apps, Samsung Members and many more.

As expected, the smartphone would sport a system-wide dark mode which makes it easy for me to use it during at night. There’s the AR zone app too in where you can use AR emojis and also some effects to spice up your photos.

Inside the smartphone is an Exynos 990 octa-core processor. This is way different from the Snapdragon 865 variant as earlier benchmarks of the Snapdragon version proved to be more powerful in the numbers however with the Exynos 990, you wouldn’t have a problem with most of the everyday tasks and apps.

In our benchmarks, the Samsung Galaxy S20 proved that the Exynos 990 is one of the most powerful chipsets on the smartphone right now. The numbers on our benchmarking applications proved that the cores on this one are powerful.

When it comes to gaming, most games might need to be more optimized on the smartphone however, we still had an enjoyable experience on the smartphone. Check out the settings and benchmark scores that we got on the Samsung Galaxy S20 on Gamebench.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Review: Camera

The camera is one of the biggest upgrades that was done on the Galaxy S20 series. There are three smartphones in the Galaxy S20 series but all of them pack a different rear camera setup. For the Samsung Galaxy S20, we’re getting here a 12MP main camera, 64MP telephoto camera that is capable of 3x optical zoom and also a 12MP wide-angle lens.

Despite having only three cameras on the smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S20 was a pretty powerful one when it comes to the camera. Initially, we noticed that the results that we got on the smartphone aren’t what we expected but after a few updates, we noticed a drastic improvement on the smartphone.

Check out our shots using the Samsung Galaxy S20.

As you can see in our shots, the smartphone was excellent. The colors are really good and we’re getting here some pretty bokeh even without using the live focus mode of the smartphone. Both the wide-angle and the ultra wide-angle lens of the smartphone performed pretty well with the really vivid colors.

The smartphone is also capable of 30x zoom which produces slightly blurry but sometimes readable details. It’s a nice feature but I doubt that a lot of people will use that feature. Another thing to love on the smartphone is the availability of the 8K video recording but it can only record at 24fps.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Review: Verdict

After using the Samsung Galaxy S20 for a while, it has been my favorite among the three Galaxy S20 series smartphones. Why? It’s handy, powerful, lightweight, and we still got here a large 6.2-inch QHD+ 120Hz display. It’s not a perfect smartphone as we only got here a triple lens camera but hey, we’re still getting here a pretty good camera and of course, the Exynos 990 processor which is also running the Galaxy S20+ and the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Another thing to love in here is the price. It’s the most affordable of them all at Php49,990. If you want a handy smartphone that is powerful with a buttery smooth display and also a powerful camera then look no further, the Samsung Galaxy S20 might be one of the best smartphones for you.

This time, Sony is focusing on the sense of touch within the gameplay and also on the audio which will give more immersion to gamers.

Samsung Galaxy S20+ (Exynos 990) Review

1

The Samsung Galaxy S20 series was unveiled in San Francisco, California last February and in the middle of the three brothers is the Samsung Galaxy S20+. Just like the other Galaxy S20 smartphones, the Galaxy S20+ brings a lot of new features to the series including a brand new SoC inside which is more powerful and of course, a big upgrade to the camera. Check out what we think about the smartphone in our review below:

Samsung Galaxy S20+ Review: Hardware and design

The Samsung Galaxy S series never fails to amaze me when it comes to build quality. We still have here an all-glass design which is premium to hold and of course, there are the metal sides on the smartphone that adds to the solidness and premium quality of the smartphone.

Out of the three Samsung Galaxy S20 smartphones, the Galaxy S20+ is the perfect one for me when it comes to ergonomics. It’s not that thick unlike the Galaxy S20 Ultra and the display size and its body size are not small nor too big for me. The ergonomics of the smartphone is pretty good too as we got here curved sides at the back, the size is just perfect for me.

When it comes to buttons, we still got here a power button and the volume rocker that is perfectly placed on the sides, however, the smartphone loses the headphone jack compared to the Galaxy S10 series but it’s 2020 already and it doesn’t affect much of the consumers now.

There’s USB-C on this smartphone and thankfully, the Samsung Galaxy S20 supports 25W fast charging and it comes with that charger too. So yeah, it’s fast enough but not as fast as other smartphones with more than 25W fast charging.

The smartphone still uses the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner inside which is still as fast as the Galaxy Note10+ that we’ve reviewed before but in case you’re not a fan of that, you can still use the face unlock of the smartphone which is still fast and very functional.

Samsung Galaxy S20+ Review: Display

The Samsung Galaxy S20+ packs an excellent display and I’ve already expected that since Samsung has always the best display on smartphones and with the Samsung Galaxy S20+, we’re getting here a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2.0 Infinity-O display. There’s no curved display in here but we do get here a 2.5D glass on the smartphone but again, it does look beautiful and we got here very minimal bezels on the smartphone.

The bezel is thinner than before and it does look good to me. The 6.7-inch display feels perfect but my favorite feature of the smartphone is not just the size of the display but also its refresh rate. We got here a 120Hz refresh rate and it does feel smooth, however, you can only use it FHD+ resolution and you have to revert to 60Hz whenever you want to set it at QHD+.

Nonetheless, the colors of the display were excellent and I love playing games on the display of the smartphone since we’re getting a smooth display thanks to the refresh rate and it’s very sharp and very visible under direct sunlight.

Samsung Galaxy S20+ Review: Battery life

The smartphone features a 4000mAh battery and it’s just a fine battery for its size however, I noticed that the power draw on the Exynos 990 was noticeable compared to the Snapdragon counterparts. We’ve used the Samsung Galaxy S20+ on PCMark and we also tested it on both 60Hz and 120Hz and below are the results that we got on the smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy S20+ at QHD, 60Hz
Samsung Galaxy S20+ at FHD, 120Hz

As you can see, 60Hz saves a lot of battery for the smartphone and it can last a whole day of usage. While the 120Hz refresh rate might give you a smoother experience on the smartphone but it affects the battery life of the smartphone as seen in the benchmarks. In my normal usage with 120Hz, I normally don’t charge the smartphone that much but sometimes, I charge the smartphone using my power bank after 10 hours of usage.

Samsung Galaxy S20+ Review: Software and Performance

The Samsung Galaxy S20+ still uses OneUI 2 as expected and of course, It was fast, swift, and the UX of the smartphone feels just fine and it might be similar to the previous OneUI but this does pack a lot of features inside Galaxy S20+.

One of my favorites is the Samsung Members in where I can get discounts, tips, and perks that are exclusive to Samsung Galaxy users. And of course, the other apps would work just fine. What I like about the OneUI is that the UI is fast, responsive and it’s really easy to use and understand.

When it comes to performance, the Samsung Galaxy S20+ is running on Exynos 990 processor which is way more different than the one in the US as the latter features a Snapdragon 865 processor which is way more powerful on the numbers and also more power-efficient. When it comes to numbers on benchmarks, the Exynos 990 doesn’t disappoint as we got here a pretty high score on benchmarking applications. Check it out below.

When it comes to gaming, I noticed that Exynos 990 isn’t as optimized as other chipsets but most of the time, the games will still run well. Check out our Gamebench scores on the Samsung Galaxy S20+ below.

To know more about GameBench, check out www.gamebench.net.

The scores that we got on the smartphone was pretty good. In PUBG Mobile, we set it up at smooth graphics with extreme framerates (You can only enable extreme framerate at smooth settings) with Anti-aliasing on and also at very high settings on Call of Duty Mobile with max frame rates with the effects on. The rest of the games runs on the highest settings possible.

Overall, I still wonder why PUBG Mobile can only run Extreme frame rates on smooth graphics settings considering that the smartphone is a flagship one. Nonetheless, the smartphone can still run on the latest games including Black Desert Mobile but it is capped at 45fps despite setting at the highest possible settings.

Samsung Galaxy S20+ Review: Camera

The tricky part about the Samsung Galaxy S20 series is the camera setup. We have three Galaxy S20 smartphones and they have different setups each for the rear camera. On the Samsung Galaxy S20+, we have here a quad-camera lens with a 64MP main camera and the camera setup of the Samsung Galaxy S20+ is similar to the Samsung Galaxy S20 except that we have an additional TOF camera at the back of the smartphone.

The lenses that we got here are the 64MP main camera for telephoto, 12MP wide, 12MP ultra-wide and a DepthVision camera for ToF camera. The shots that we got on the smartphone were really good and we did like the shots that we got on the smartphone as they’re sharp, better than the last generation, and they’re vivid.

When it comes to zooming, this one isn’t as good as the S20 Ultra but the 30x zoom of the Samsung Galaxy S20+ is one of the best things that I liked about the camera of the smartphone. The 30x zoom isn’t as clear as expected but it can help if you want to shoot from afar. Check out the shots that I got on the smartphone.

As you can see in most of the shots of the smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S20+’s rear camera is sharp and the color accuracy of the smartphone is really good. The dynamic range is also really good on this one and selfies, we now have a more detailed and less “watercolor” effect on our selfies compared to other Samsung Galaxy devices. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S20+ is a pretty excellent smartphone in terms of camera.

Lastly, there’s 4K video recording on the smartphone too at 60fps and it was quite good but if you want, you can also record at 8K but you’re stuck as 24fps on that one and it doesn’t have really good autofocus at 8K. And yes, there’s a rolling shutter on 8K too but hey, at least you’re getting an 8K video recording on the Samsung Galaxy S20+ which is a first.

Samsung Galaxy S20+ Review: Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy S20+ is an excellent smartphone despite being in the middle of the three smartphones. The size of the smartphone is just perfect as we got here a 6.7-inch display that can go up to 120Hz and of course, the 64MP camera is really good despite not having the same 108MP sensor of the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Despite having a good display, design, and camera on the Galaxy S20+, some people might think twice about the Exynos 990 chipset inside the smartphone. Yes, it’s powerful but it’s not as optimized as other chipsets in some games and it’s not as power-efficient as the Snapdragon 865 processor. Nonetheless, the smartphone can still run most games and the numbers that we’re getting on synthetic benchmarks are still on the flagship level.

The Samsung Galaxy S20+ might be the best Galaxy S20 variant if you prefer balance among the three smartphones. Again, we got here an excellent display, design, and also a really good camera.

The Samsung Galaxy S20+ is now available for Php55,990

Samsung Galaxy S20 vs. Huawei P40 Specs Comparison

0

Both Huawei and Samsung offers three variants for their flagship series. For Samsung, there’s the Galaxy S20, S20+, and the S20 Ultra while Huawei has the P40, P40 Pro, and the P40 Pro Plus but today, we’re gonna focus on the two more affordable and smaller variants and these are the Samsung Galaxy S20 and the Huawei P40.

Samsung Galaxy S20 vs Huawei P40 Specifications

By just looking at the specifications, these two smartphones are really different inside. First, let’s discuss the chipset. The Exynos 990 is Samsung’s own processor while the Kirin 990 5G is Huawei’s own chipset and it does support 5G. In our initial benchmarks, the Samsung Galaxy S20 scored 519667 in Antutu while the Huawei P40 scored 483967. But of course, that doesn’t translate in the gaming performance and oh, the Kirin 990 inside the Huawei P40 supports 5G which is a big thing.

Next is the display. The Samsung Galaxy S20 has an advantage on this one as we got here a bigger 6.2-inch display with better QHD+ resolution and of course, a smoother 120Hz refresh rate while the Huawei P40 has a 6.1-inch Full HD+ OLED display. Both smartphones have a punch-hole design but the Huawei P40 has a bigger one since this one features a dual selfie camera.

For the camera, it’s a tight race as we got here a triple-lens camera on both smartphones but they do have a different implementation on both smartphones. For the Samsung Galaxy S20, we have a higher megapixel count as we got here a 64MP telephoto lens that is capable of 30x zoom along with the 12MP main camera and also 12MP ultra wide-angle lens.

While the Huawei P40 features a 50MP Ultra Vision main camera, 16MP ultra wide-angle, and 8MP telephoto lens. The smartphone is also capable of 30x zoom but the advantage of the Huawei P40 is that the smartphone has a better AI implementation that drastically improves the shots that we’re getting on the Huawei P40. For selfies, we got here a 10MP selfie camera on the Samsung Galaxy S20 while the Huawei P40 features a 32MP selfie camera with Infrared that can help in better bokeh and of course, for face unlock.

When it comes to other features, the Samsung Galaxy S20 comes with a better 25W Fast Charging versus the 22.5W charging of the Huawei P40 but both smartphones will pack an in-display fingerprint scanner. When it comes to the battery, the Samsung Galaxy S20 also comes with a slightly bigger 4000mAh battery while the Huawei P40 has a smaller 3800mAh battery

For connectivity, the Huawei P40 has a big advantage as this one sports 5G in where the variant of the Samsung Galaxy S20 in the Philippines only comes with 4G LTE. The Samsung Galaxy S20 is also running One UI 2 based on Android 10 while the Huawei P40 comes with EMUI 10.1 based on Android 10 but this one is taking advantage of the Huawei AppGallery for the apps as this one doesn’t have Google Play inside.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S20 and the Huawei P40 are great smartphones. They have their own strengths and the specifications of both smartphones are really great. If the features of the Huawei P40 isn’t a dealbreaker for you, then this one is a pretty good smartphone despite having an inferior camera compared to its bigger brothers as we still got here a powerful CPU, pretty good camera, 5G, and a more affordable price at Php36,990.

But if you’re into Samsung, the Galaxy S20 still isn’t bad either as we got here a powerful camera inside, a really buttery smooth 120Hz display and of course, some jam-packed features. The Samsung Galaxy S20 is now available for Php49,990.
