Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 & 10.5: The best Android tablets right now

1

Samsung Galaxy Tab S has been announced today and I gotta admit to you guys, I changed my mind from getting the iPad to getting the Samsung Galaxy Tab S. When the Samsung Galaxy Tab S was announced a month ago, I said to myself, this is just another tablet from Samsung similar to Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro but I was wrong. I didn’t expect the Samsung Galaxy Tab S would be that great.

Like what I’ve said in my previous post about the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4, the 8.4″ display feels just the right size for me. Yes, whether you’re on a portrait or on landscape mode, the 8.4″ display feels just right for everything and speaking of display, you can’t believe how good the display was. Both tablets sports a WQXGA (2560×1600) Super AMOLED display. So what’s up with a Super AMOLED Display? well, with this display, expect that the colors are more vivid, a remarkable contrast ratio, more realistic images and videos, and the blacks are darker and the whites are brighter.

I’m not really a fan of Galaxy Tabs but the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4’s display was just amazing, jaw-dropping. Another thing to love in the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is the weight and its dimensions. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 with LTE is thinner and lighter compared to the iPad Air, oh and there’s phone functionality on this tablet too. Interesting huh? Some of the features on the Samsung Galaxy S5 are also present in these devices like the fingerprint sensor, ultra power saving mode and the kids mode.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S (Thinner) Versus Samsung Galaxy S5 (Thicker)

Compared to the previous 10″ Samsung Galaxy Tab devices, this one has a larger display. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S has a larger display at 10.5″, that’s 0.4″ bigger than its predecessor. So, what can you guys expect from this tablet? Well, just like the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4, the tablet’s display won’t disappoint. It has the same WQXGA resolution which is probably bigger than your TV’s resolution and yes, the display was still great just like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4. The specifications of both tablets are almost similar but if you want more productivity, you should probably get the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5.

Just like the Samsung Galaxy S5, these tablets would have a perforated back design. Some people might not find it attractive but you would probably love the colors and the dimensions of the tablet. I’m also wondering why Samsung decided to use Snapdragon 800 on these devices rather than the Snapdragon 801 which can be found on the Samsung Galaxy S5. If you’re looking for some accessories for your tablet, there’s a book cover and a keyboard that is available for both tablets. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S LTE is now available in Titanium Bronze and Dazzling White. The price? it’s now available for P24,990 and P29,990 for the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and Galaxy Tab S10.5 respectively.

OH and if you’re planning to buy a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and 10.5 this weekend, better go to SM Megamall because for every purchase of Samsung Galaxy Tab S devices, there’s a free Book Cover and a battery pack. That’s a total of P4,398 and P4,798 of freebies for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and Tab S 10.5 respectively.

However, if you’re planning to buy a Samsung Galaxy Tab S tomorrow at SM Megamall, better line up between 10AM-12NN because for every purchase, you are entitled to draw from a fish ball containing paper lots for a chance to win a free Samsung Gadgets. Like what? well, you can get a chance to win a Samsung Galaxy S5, Homesync, Gear Neo, Simple covers, Samsung E1272, & Samsung NX Mini Awesome huh?

Every year, there’s always a new Galaxy flagship phone coming from Samsung and most of us always want to be updated when a new phone comes out. We’ve all seen it. We’ve all been waiting for it. Every year, they introduce new features that would make us drool over their new flagship phone.

This year, Samsung introduced the Samsung Galaxy S5 with a lot of new features. I have to admit that I fell in love and very happy with it. I’m really amazed with these new features they released this year like the Ultra Power Saving Mode, water resistance, fingerprint sensor, & heart sensor. The Ultra Power Saving Mode feature of the S5 has always been useful for me ever since I found my hand on this smartphone. Being the very tech savvy that I am, I am the type of guy whose attention is always on his phone—it is either I am playing games, trying new apps, taking photos, or checking my social networking site feeds. Now, it saves all the hassle! I don’t have to bring a power bank with me all the time anymore. I wish more phones could have that.

As a tech blogger, I always want to have the latest smartphone and to maximize all of its features. It is part of the job to always be one of the first to try out a gadget. And whenever I review a mobile unit, I am always looking at the processing power of a smartphone. Based on my experience, Samsung smartphones did not disappoint. It gets better every year. But then, one of the challenges bloggers have to face is the fact that gadgets (especially with really good features) are normally costly. It is not easy for us to get the newest phone models even if we want to, especially me because I am still a student. That’s why, when I heard about Globe’s Galaxy Forever Plan, I didn’t think twice and instantly considered it.

Yes, I’ve tried different flagship units and I never get contented with a smartphone. Most of the time, I find myself craving for the next iteration of a flagship phone and thankfully, Globe offers Galaxy Forever Plan where you can have the latest Samsung Galaxy phone unit every year without subscribing to another plan.

The Galaxy Forever Plan starts at 1599 and not only you’ll get a phone but you’ll also get Free Spotify Premium for 6 months! I tell you, it’s worth it.

Sony Xperia C3
Sony Xperia C3

Sony just unveiled their newest phone and it is expected to be loved by selfie lovers because the Sony Xperia C3 is the first smartphone from Sony to sports a front facing camera with LED flash. If you can still remember, this is not actually the first from an smartphone. One of the first smartphones to have a front facing flash was the Starmobile Muse. There is nothing really special about the Sony Xperia C3 aside from that and its specifications is very similar to some of the offerings on the local brands. Check out the specifications below:

Sony Xperia C3 Specifications
  • Snapdragon 400 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Quad-core processor
  • 5.5″ HD (1280×720) Triluminous display
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB Internal Storage
  • 8 MP Rear Camera with LED Flash
  • 5 MP Front Camera with LED Flash (Super Wide Angle lens)
  • Bluetooth
  • LTE
  • AGPS
  • Wi-Fi
  • NFC
  • 2500mAh Battery
  • Android 4.4 Kitkat
The Snapdragon 400 LTE is the same processor that is powering the Cherry Mobile Ultra which performs pretty well both on games and LTE and aside from the selfie-focus wide angle camera, there are selfie apps pre-installed on the phone too. Unfortunately, there’s no word about the pricing and when will this phone arrives in our shores.

LG G3 now official, starts at P29,990

LG G3 Ate
LG G3 Ate

LG’s latest flagship phone has finally been launched in the Philippines and yes, I got a chance to play with this smartphone for a bit and I was very impressed with it. LG has showed us how and what a flagship smartphone should be like. Another device that made an appearance during the launch was the Android Wear powered LG G Watch. So what do I think about these devices? Check them out after the break.

LG G Watch

I was shocked that there’s an LG G Watch on display at the LG G3 launch. The LG G Watch was recently available in the US last Google I/O and the LG G watch is only available at Google play. The LG G Watch is one of the first Android wear devices along with the Samsung Gear Live and Moto 360.

The first I notice with the G Watch is its build. The construction of the G Watch is purely made up of plastic and the band wasn’t really attractive. The didn’t like the build of the LG G Watch but the OS inside it, Android Wear, has a lot of potential.

I was impressed by Android Wear and even at noisy environments, the LG G Watch was able to recognize my voice via Google Now. The implementation and the UI was also easy to use but at first time users, some people might find it hard to understand. Personally, I would still choose the Sony Smartwatch 2 over Android wear because Android wear is still too young and there are only a few apps available on that platform.

LG G3

This is the most beautiful smartphone that I’ve seen. With their new flagship, the LG G3 refined the flaws of the LG G2. The LG G3 still sports a power and volume button at the back and the design was very premium and beautiful. The LG G3 is still made up of plastic but the feel was very different, it is very premium and despite having a 5.5″ display, the ergonomics of the LG G3 was pretty good thanks to its thin bezels and curvy back.

The display of the LG G3 is a monstrous 5.5″ Quad HD display. If you don’t have any idea what a Quad HD is like, the Quad HD resolution is 2560×1440. Yes, that’s even bigger than your normal HDTV at home. I was actually impressed by it but I barely see the difference between a Full HD (1920×1080)

The camera of the LG G3 was one of its most interesting feature. It’s the first phone to sport a laser auto-focus system and I was very amazed by it. Even at lowlight condition, the LG G3 was able to focus on an object and  it was even faster than the Samsung Galaxy S5.

LG G3 Specifications

  • 5.5″ True HD-IPS + Quad HD Display
  • 2.5 GHz Snapdragon 800 Quad-Core Processor
  • 16 GB/2 GB & 32GB/3GB variants
  • MicroSD card slot up to 128 GB
  • 13 MP, phase detection/laser autofocus & optical image stabilization with dual-LED flash
  • 2.1 MP Front Camera
  • LTE
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • NFC
  • Dolby Sound Enhancement
  • Android 4.4 Kitkat
  • 3000mAh removable battery

The LG G3 is now available in Metallic Black, Silk White, Shine Gold and Burgundy Red and it is priced at P29,990 and P33,990 for the 16 GB and 32 GB respectively. The LG G Watch, sorry to disappoint you guys but there are no word regarding its pricing and availability.

Cherry Mobile Cosmos U Review: It’s beautiful & elegant

0
Cherry Mobile Cosmos U front 2
Cherry Mobile Cosmos U front 2

The Cosmos line of Cherry Mobile has been known as the premium line of Cherry Mobile. The most affordable of them all is the Cherry Mobile Cosmos U and fortunately, I was one of the first people to try it out. But yeah, this is just an engneering unit that’s why there are still some flaws in the unit itself.

The build quality of the Cherry Mobile Cosmos U is one of its strongest points. It sports a metal accents which makes the feel more solid and premium. The rear and the front sports a glossy patterned design just like the Samsung Galaxy S4. The unit that I got is an engineering unit that’s why there are squeaks and slight openings but you can already feel the Cherry Mobile Cosmos U is very solid thanks to its metal sides

The buttons were well placed but the volume button and power button were placed higher than I expected that’s why it is much harder to reach but it’s not really a big issue for me. The curves of the phone was  good too. The Cherry Mobile Cosmos U is really nice to hold thanks to its nice curves and the smaller bezel. The device weighs just right but you might feel that it is a bit heavier than other phones because of its metal sides.

The Cherry Mobile Cosmos U has a 5″ IPS HD display. The display looks nice but unfortunately, it isn’t a Super AMOLED display unlike the other member of the Cosmos family. It’s not oversaturated and the display looks just right. The colors, viewing angles and the sunlight legibility was good and the display was very responsive however, I notice that the blacks on the display aren’t completely black unlike other displays. Despite its shortcomings, I can still say that the Cherry Mobile Cosmos U’s display is still good.

Cherry Mobile Cosmos U’s micro USB port is placed at the bottom right and yes folks, it supports OTG. Inside the Cherry Mobile Cosmos U is an 8 GB internal storage. If you feel that the 8 GB storage inside it isn’t enough, you can opt for a MicroSD card and install the apps there. And yes, you could put both Micro Sim and Mini Sim inside.

The battery of the phone is rated at 2000mAh and It was able to last up to a day of average use. The phone might not survive a day at work if you’re using it heavily for games and mobile data but nonethless, I think the Cherry Mobile Cosmos U’s battery isn’t that bad, It’s actually longer than I expected. The audio quality of the phone sounds just right too and I got no complaints with it.

The Cherry Mobile Cosmos U also have a special feature called Cherry features. 3 of the 5 features were borrowed from Samsung and these are Smarty Stay, Smart Unlock and Smart Call and the remaining two can only be found on the Cherry Mobile Cosmos U. One of them is Smart Anti-touch, this feature is very useful especially to those people who kept on unlocking their phones accidentally on their pockets. With this feature, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos U will not unlock even if rubbed to a fabric. You might find the Smart Magic funny. Why? because this feature enables you to unlock the phone by just blowing the microphone. To make it even funnier, I shall call this feature as blow to unlock.

The Cherry Mobile Cosmos U runs on Android 4.2.2 and there are no word if this phone will be updated to Android 4.4 Kitkat. This smartphone comes with some apps pre-installed like EFXpress which is a built-in video editor. There’s an Easy finder app too which is a protection against snatchers and it’s also a kill switch in where the phone will automatically wipe if an intruder tries to unlock your smartphone.

The Cherry Mobile Cosmos U was able to get a score of 16941 on Antutu. I think that’s great and there might be probably some improvements on the retail unit since the unit that I’m reviewing right now is an engineering unit. When it comes to games, I tried NBA 2k14 and yes, there were no problems playing that game on the Cherry Mobile Cosmos U however, heavy games like Edge of Tomorrow and Godizilla doesn’t run on the smartphone. You’ll be able to play some heavy games on this smartphone but don’t expect very smooth frame rates when playing those games.

Just like its bigger Cosmos brothers, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos U has an 18 Megapixel camera and yes it’s interpolated but don’t worry, the camera quality was pretty good compared to the Cherry Mobile Cosmos X which I reviewed a few months back. The camera of the Cherry Mobile Cosmos U is sharper than the Cosmos X but sometimes, the images that I took still lack colors but shooting at lowlight conditions has improved and the Cosmos U can focus on objects faster than I expected. The video recording was pretty good too and focusing while recording was pretty fast and accurate. Although the Cherry Mobile Cosmos U has a better camera than the Cosmos X, I still think there’s a lot to improve on the camera. When zooming on images, the images are not yet that clear. Check out the sample shots below.

I really love the Cherry Mobile Cosmos U’s metal design. The back of the phone might be made up of plastic but the metal sides of the phone make it premium and very elegant but I was disappointed not to see a Super AMOLED display on this smartphone. Despite not having a Super AMOLED display, I think the device biggest strength is its design. Yes folks, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos U is beautiful. It’s elegant. It’s premium.

The Cherry Mobile Cosmos U has an SRP of 8,999.

Note: This review unit of Cherry Mobile Cosmos U is an engineering unit. There might be some changes in the retail unit.

Cloudfone Thrill 600FHD: 6″ Android Kitkat Smartphone w/ Octa-Core processor

0

UPDATE: There’s a 3000mAh battery inside the Cloudfone Thrill 600FHD

Cloudfone has announced the Cloudfone Thrill 600FHD and yes, it is rocking an octa-core processor! Aside from that, the new Cloudfone Thrill 600FHD would also have a Full HD IPS display with Dragontrail glass. Unfortunately, the price of the Cloudfone hasn’t been announced yet but I’m already pretty interested with its specifications. Check it out below.

Cloudfone Thrill 600FHD Specifications

  • 6” Full HD IPS OGS Dragontrail touchscreen Display
  • 1.7 GHz MT6592 Octacore Processor
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 32 GB Storage
  • 13 MP Rear Camera w/ LED Flash
  • 8 MP Front Camera
  • HSPA+
  • Bluetooth
  • WiFi
  • 3000mAh Battery
  • Android 4.4 Kitkat
It’s nice to see that this phone would have Android 4.4 Kitkat inside it & the design of the Cloudfone Thrill 600FHD looks simple but it was pretty good looking. I’m really interested on this one because this smartphone would be powered by Android 4.4 Kitkat and there’s a 32 GB storage inside which is already enough for me but unfortunately for some people who are looking for more storage, there’s no MicroSD card slot on this baby. We’re not sure yet how big the battery will be or how much this smartphone will be price.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Review

1
SGS5 Image 1
SGS5 Image 1

The biggest galaxy is finally revealed. The Samsung Galaxy S5 is now here. It’s the fifth flagship phone of Samsung and this time they moved away from the plastic feel and is now sporting a dimpled and perforated design.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is very proud with its dimpled rear design which is very similar to the first generation of Nexus 7 however, the feel is different and I find the Samsung Galaxy S5’s dimpled design better than the Nexus 7. During the launch of Samsung Galaxy S5, many fans have neutral comments with the overall design but when you see it in person and actually get to use it, your perspective will change and you will find the Samsung Galaxy S5 really elegant.

Just like the previous flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S5 still sports chrome accents and it is still made up of plastic. The buttons are still the same except for the new menu button, which they ditched in favour of the app switcher button which helps me become more productive. The home button also acts as a fingerprint sensor but unlike Apple’s Touch ID, you have to swipe your finger instead of placing your finger at the top of the home button.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is water and dust resistant too. This is not the first Android flagship of Samsung to have this feature, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active was sporting this feature before. The Samsung Galaxy S5 will be able to last up to 30 minutes underwater (1m). You won’t be able to use the display underwater and the capacitive buttons doesn’t work too but you can use the camera and the volume button to take a photo underwater. Still, the thought of having a smartphone with an underwater feature is still cool! Perfect for Summer and outdoor adventures!

The best thing about the Samsung Galaxy S5 is that it is still light and despite a larger bezels, it is still very comfortable to hold. The device sports a 5.1” Full HD Super AMOLED display and the viewing angles and the sunlight legibility was great. One thing the sports enthusiasts (specifically bikers) would probably love on the Samsung Galaxy S5 is the ability to use it even if they are not wearing gloves. It probably has the best display on a smartphone right now.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 got all the things that you want. There’s NFC and LTE here. There’s also a new feature called download booster which will use both your mobile data and Wi-Fi to download a file. Inside the Samsung Galaxy S5 is a 16 GB storage, and though only around 11 GB is usable that’s why I can use my 32 GB MicroSD as added storage for my media files.

The battery life of the Samsung Galaxy S5 really surprised me. I did not expect the Samsung Galaxy S5 would last up to half a day of heavy use. I’m not using my powerbank anymore because it can last up to a whole day already. And when my battery starts to run low, I’ll just turn on the Ultra Power Saving Mode which will change the color of your screen to black and white and it will restrict usage to only essential applications which will drastically improves the battery life of the smartphone.

Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the speaker were placed at the back and not below the phone. This is something different from other Samsung smartphones and other phone brands. Speaking of audio, the quality of the speaker is superb.

Samsung wants to align the Samsung Galaxy S5 as your fitness coach. They’ve improved the S-Health app and they’ve added a heart rate sensor at the back of the smartphone. They placed the heart rate sensor beside the flash of the camera and all you need to do is to place your index finger on top and then the Samsung Galaxy S5 will measure your heart rate. Aside from the heart rate sensor, you can also use your smartphone as a pedometer.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is powered by the latest Android 4.4 Kitkat and it is still skinned by Touchwiz UI but compared to the older Touchwiz UI, the one in the samsung Galaxy S5 has a flatter design and less bugs. It’s now more comfortable to use. Thankfully, Samsung decided to omit some bloatwares on the device to give way for more storage and if you want to use those apps, don’t worry because you can download those apps on the Samsung App store.

One of the features that I really like on the Samsung Galaxy S5 is the private mode. With that feature, you’ll be able to transfer your pictures and videos to a private space and you can only view those photos and videos with the associated fingerprint. It’s a really great feature especially when a lot of people are borrowing your phone and you don’t want to show some files to them

The Samsung Galaxy S5 uses a Quad-Core Snapdragon 801 processor with a 2 GB of RAM and it didn’t fail to amaze me. As expected, I was able to play all the games withouts lags an despite having a smaller RAM, the Samsung Galaxy S5 got a score of 35048 which is slightly higher than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 sports a 16 Megapixel camera and proudly boasting a lot of cool and awesome features. Samsung Galaxy S5 boasts a real time HDR mode that lets you see how the enhanced photo would look like before shooting. Another thing that you’ll love in this device is the blazing fast autofocus camera. And yes, taking photos are now much better, thanks to that. There’s also a new feature on the camera called selective focus which will allow you to adjust the focus of the image after you shoot the photo.

I took a lot of photos using the Samsung Galaxy S5 and it was able to exceed my expectations. I also noticed that the Samsung Galaxy S5 can now capture more colors than the Galaxy Note 3. And again, I really love the fast autofocus camera. The Samsung Galaxy S5 is also capable of recording 4k videos but I doubt that you already have a 4k monitor for that. Here are some shots that I took using the Samsung Galaxy S5.

In conclusion, I love the Samsung Galaxy S5 because it helps me maximize my hobbies and interests. I can say that the experience was awesome. I hope Samsung will have better features on the next flagship unit, but I think the Samsung Galaxy S5 is currently the best device the market can offer.

My favorite feature of the Samsung Galaxy S5 is the water and dust resistance. Aside from being a Tech blogger, I also love the outdoors. Whenever I go out for some biking, I’m not worried anymore about the weather because the Samsung Galaxy S5 can withstand rain and dust. This summer, I was also able to use the Samsung Galaxy S5 to take pictures underwater.

So why you should get the Samsung Galaxy S5 at Globe? Here are some my reasons:

  1. 4. Flexible and fully-customizable postpaid plans of your choice: This is probably the best thing why you should get a Samsung Galaxy S5 at Globe. You can get the Samsung Galaxy S5 for as low as P1,799 a month at Globe mySUPERPLAN.
